Ruger Precision Rifle Discussion

To be honest, I don't see what all the fuss is about..

Put the action in my vise.
Removed the handguard.
Removed the bushings.
Gave the barrel nut wrench a solid whack with a mallet.
Came right off the first hit no problem.

What at are you guys torquing the nut to? Around 60 ft/lbs? I'm searching that's about right for PRS rifles?

After a LONG string of work hours and other distractions I finally got to the range and tried out my GEN 1 RPR in .308.
It was a nice day with too much sunlight ( needed sunglasses ) but dead calm and cool temps.
I have about 1000 rounds loaded with Sierra 175's in Federal match cases on top of IMR-4064 powder @ 43.5 grains that was for another rifle so why not see if the Ruger likes it?
It did.

I had a nice one hole group going (fired off the Harris bipod ) and should have ignored looking thru the spotting scope and pulled the 5th shot but still respectable. My rifle is bone stock with the addition of a Leupold 8.5 x 25 MK4 scope , rings and a blackout flash hider. Ruger did good and zero complaints with mine. Recoil impulse is sharper than my FN SPR but accuracy is the same for me. The ammo I reloaded was for the SPR.

I know the .308 is not the trendy sexy caliber but they still shoot and for ranges I will actually see fits the bill perfectly.
I need to mod the magazine follower to remove the bolt hold open to allow the bolt to close on an empty magazine but that is about it.

Next up is trying my titanium .30 cal suppressor on it.

Just brought home my Ruger Precision Rifle in 6.5 Creedmore. It has a temporary scope on it till my Vortex Razor HD comes in and I can start shooting out to 1500 meters...well at least a 1000m for a while.
The compensator is clocked a little to the right and the lowest I can get the trigger is 2 1/4lbs
Overall impression is good ...trigger is OK if you are used to AR triggers this should feel just fine but having been used to real crisp, little take-up triggers on my other centerfire and rimfire bolt guns it feels a little weird, also its heavy and I'm sure it will get worse when I put the Vortex on it. I can't wait to take it out and test it to see if its money well spent or not.

The Vortex is perfect. I got the EBR-1C. Sunday I will go shoot the 600 yard. Wish me luck.

Pick up a couple of MAGPUL 7.62 x51 type AC magazines. They are designed for bolt action rifles and run flawlessly in the Rugers. They are great for no bolt hold open and are perfect for single round through the port loading as well. The mags they send with it are semi-auto mags. Not well suited in my opinion.

I have a Sig 716 that uses the same magpul mags so they get double duty. Not sure if M14 mags will close on an empty mag but I have a bunch so I will have to try them.

So, since I wanted to keep it simple and just use the Pmags, I decided to make a single load to allow me to do that since some matches require single load. Makes it easier than having to pop the mag down. Bent a 5.56 AR stripper clip guide, cleaned up the edges and applied cold blue. Works like a champ!
Works like a champ! Body lies right on the rear "lips" and the neck/shoulder on the front(clip guide area)

Ordered a Timney trigger today. The factory trigger was fine after being cleaned and adjusted but I felt a Timney last week and was impressed with it. Last upgrade will be a Proof CF barrel whenever this factory barrel finally decides to die. 1700+ rounds and still sub-half moa. I can't chase the lands anymore so we'll see what happens and when. Has anyone shot out a factory barrel yet?

So I wanted to ask some guys in here that have experience with BOTH Rifles, I have got my father into long range shooting and he is thinking of getting into a rifle but doesn't want to spend the money of what I have in my Gunsmith Built Rifles. I have heard great things of the Ruger Precision and the Bergara Rifles but no one in Oklahoma has both of them in stock to do a nice side by side comparison. I realize both will have some good and bad but looking for some opinions on the better built, better bang for buck, better overall rifle. He would be buying it for mostly target shooting on steel but may hunt with it, he would be buying it in 6.5 CM so he could buy shelf ammo and not need to reload unless he wanted to. The comparison would really be narrowed down to the Ruger Precision and the Bergara BMP or LRP, Thanks for your help...

Well seeing as how this as an RPR thread I think anything you hear from us will be for the RPR, and for good reason (although I admit I have never fired the Bergara let alone held one). For me it comes down to 1 thing between the 2, customization. The RPR is fully customizable, the Bergara you are pretty much stuck with how the factory rifle comes (from what I have seen and read). I have a few very high end rifles as well as the RPR, but I enjoy shooting the RPR because of the return I get on a relatively inexpensive investment.

What factory 6.5 CM ammo are y'all shooting?

Sent from my SM-G928V using Tapatalk

I have shot Hornady 140 gr ELD Match, Winchester 140 gr Match and Federal American Eagle 140 gr OTM. All have shot well at 100 yards but I have only taken the Hornady out to 1,000 yards so I can't say how the others shoot at distance. I plan to reload using the Hornady 140 gr ELD Match bullets. Also, I haven't shot any of the lighter or heavier weight bullets.

Hell my barrel is canted a little to the right and still prints little groups. If I can get 1700 out of mine then I don't have to worry about replacing the barrel anytime soon.

No I realize it would be somewhat biased in a RPR thread but thats also why I asked is because I knew alot in here would have experience with the RPR and probably at some point compared it to the Bergara.

A shooting buddy of mine has a top line Bergara and neither of us are impressed with it from an accuracy standpoint. He has done extensive load development and just can't get it to shoot well. He's sure at this point that he'll either rebarrel or sell it. I know the same thing has happened with a few of the RPRs but he could have had about four of them for the cost of the Bergara. And the RPR is a lot easier to modify.

Good info to know, I could understand some things on either rifle, not being accurate isn't one I could stomach after dropping a couple grand.

hello all. I have a rpr gen 1 and have noticed that my folder latch has become loose. I can rock the stock back and forth enough to where I can either be on target or off target at 100 yards and beyond. Is this normal for the rpr folder latch, if not is there a fix for this?

Send it back to Ruger. it shouldn't wobble at all, especially in the unfolded position.

might have to do that, I have had nothing but problems with this thing, so I guess its time to send it in.
thanks for the reply

its hit and miss. mine has been rock solid. the only issue I had was the damn barrel nut when changing the handguard, they way over torque it from the factory.

I feel pretty lucky with mine even though my barrel is can'ted. I'm not even going to mess with it until I swap the barrel. However my folder latch was super tight when I got it and now it will open with just my thumb, nothing loose yet.

well just got off the phone with ruger, customer service seems to be pretty nice. Going to send it in and see what they have to say about it. they said 5-7 day turn around time on average so that's not to bad. will put the results once I find out whats going on. That sucks about your barrel. I changed mine about a year ago and never looked back lol.

hazards of mass production I suppose. but yeah as long as you can zero it and still have some windage left to dial, shoot it until it burns out.

I lucked out with the barrel nut. Mine came off super easy.

The only problem I'm having with mine is that a lot of times the mag comes loose when I fire. It doesn't actually drop out or anything. Just sometimes have to push it back up in order to chamber the next round.

What are you guys torquing the nut to? I've got mine at about 60 ft/lbs

My rifle has been a dream to work on. I changed out the handgard and safety to Seekins. It was fairly simple and straightforward to do. I wanted the flat bottom handgard for competition shooting off of barricades and props. I really could have left the rifle stock after spraying down the trigger with Hornady One Shot Cleaner and Lube. The only thing on the rifle that wasn't ready to shoot competitions was the mags. Mine are still new and unused. I bought a couple of Accuracy mags and got on with life. One of the main reasons I bought this rifle was the ability to work on it myself.

I don't shoot factory ammo. Why would I? Hand loads are 1/2 the price and much more consistent in every factor of the loading process. Basically why pay twice as much for substandard ammo? Take apart some factory match ammo sometime and measure it up. It's a big eye opener.

Some of us don't have the time nor resources to hand load. Granted it's understandable that you will get a more desirable result with ammo that you can control the process with. I just work to much. That's why I was asking about factory ammo. I just want to be able to go shoot. Thank you though.

We have ran about everything in my wife's Rpr except the new federal loaded with bergers. The favorites seem to be the prime and 140 eld-m. Atomic shot really good also but is pricier. Haven't taken the prime to 1000 yet but eld-m shot great at that distance.

I have both the RPR and a Bergara LRP Premier. The Bergara Premier series uses the same barrel and action as there custom rifles and comes with a very nice Timney trigger. Both are nice but the Bergara shoots tighter groups. It is $700 more. Either one will shot sub MOA with factory match ammo.

This thread has been a wealth of knowledge and info for me, thanks to all who have contributed. I have my rifle about ready to go. I put an Ergo grip on it, fits my paw much better than the stock plastic deal. Should be able to get out and put the first rounds downrange in Mid May. I need to get a log book, but that is about it.
Still much to learn, but I am excited about it all.

So I got my Ruger RPR out today finally to shoot it for the first time and I'm having the same primer cratering issue that others are having in the new 556 model. Also my trigger is pretty terrible. I've got 5 different Savage rifles, so I am used to and like the trigger blade, but my trigger has some pretty rough creep. It's like mil-spec AR trigger rough. I'm wonder if it is worth trying to take the trigger apart to see if I can make things a little bit better. Either way, my Savage 10 accutrigger next to the RPR is like night and day. It's kind of like the difference between a Geissele SSA-E vs Milspec trigger.

Overall I like the rifle a lot, there are just a couple of little issues that I'm going to have to address before it's where it needs to be.

Turbo, for me the grip was the first thing to go. Honestly I'd rather they just charge a few bucks more and save me the slight hassle of placing an order and replacing that grip. To me, that small hard piece of plastic was useless

How is replacing the hand guard on the gen 2s? I bought a Seekins Mlok hand guard and am wondering if I should just take it to a smith or if it's still easy on the gen 2s with the enhanced hand guard. I found a video of a guy replacing the original hand guard on the gen 1, but haven't found anything on the gen 2.

Getting the Gen 2 handguard off literally takes about 2 minutes. No need to pay a smith.

My LGS has a few of these in stock, both 6.5 and .308 - I really want one. Probably get it in 308 and order a good LRI 6.5 barrel for it...

My only hesitation at this point of my research is the stock hinge... I've seen one or two folks say they loosen up... What's the deal? Guys that have 1000+ rounds through it, how's it holding up?

1700 rounds in mine. Same as the day I bought it

^ same here after 1300. I did have an idea early on to punch that hinge out and put a pin in that thing much like a take down pin on an AR15 so it was easily detachable instead of just folding. I'll get around to it someday.

in order to get it off however you must remove the muzzle break in order to get the nut off (no homo)

Is it easy to get off? I've never removed a brake before. I'd like to do it all myself, but the most I've done is assemble some AR lowers, so I'm inexperienced with tinkering with guns. .

My rifle arrives soon, as does my scope. Already got the rings. Just trying to figure out if I need to find a smith so I can begin looking to get that taken care of as soon as I get the rifle.

No different than any other. Getting it back on is harder

I like my mini tank brake. Functions great and the handguard slips right over it.

I have no intentions of replacing the brake. I'll try and take a swing at doing it myself, I'd definitely like to avoid a gunsmith. Thanks guys, can't wait to take it out. I do all of my shooting on BLM land (avoid ranges like the plague) so I can set up at virtually any distance.

Picked up an enhanced model this week in 6.5CM. Deciding on what optic I will finally put on it. Ordered an Atlas bipod.

Higher the better seems to be the consensus. I have the NF Extreme High 1.5" on mine with a NF SHV with a 56 mm obj

How much clearance do you have between the obj. bell and the top of the rail?

It's in storage right now because I'm moving, so I can't measure it, but it clears without any problem with scope caps on it. It's not too high either. I have a Magpul PRS on it, and the cheek piece is hardly raised.
