Nigel Max Edge, a former Marine who was previously known as Sean William DeBevoise, has been identified as the suspect in a mass shooting that occurred at a waterfront bar in Southport, North Carolina. The incident took place at the American Fish Company on the evening of Saturday, September 27, 2025, leaving three people dead and at least eight injured.
Details of the incident

• The shooting: At around 9:30 p.m., a suspect in a boat opened fire on patrons at the American Fish Company, an outdoor bar located at the Southport Yacht Basin.
• Arrest: Following the shooting, the U.S. Coast Guard located and detained a person matching the suspect's description at a public boat ramp on nearby Oak Island. The suspect was then handed over to the Southport Police Department.
• Charges: Edge has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He is being held without bond.

The suspect's background

• Military service: Edge, whose original name was Sean DeBevoise, served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was deployed to Iraq in 2006, where he sustained traumatic injuries, including a head wound.
• Mental health: According to online posts and public records, Edge was diagnosed with schizophrenia and experienced mental health struggles following his service-related injuries.
• Conspiracy theories: He reportedly became increasingly consumed by conspiracy theories, alleging he was targeted by a "white supremacist LGBTQ pedophile ring." He also filed lawsuits and published a book on Amazon titled Headshot: Betrayal of a Nation.
• Celebrity connection: In 2012, while known as Sean DeBevoise, he attended the CMT Music Awards with country singer Kellie Pickler. After their relationship ended, he reportedly sued her, claiming she tried to have him killed.
• Name change: DeBevoise legally changed his name to Nigel Max Edge in 2023.
