Re: Underground Skunkworks "OPERATOR" Series 2011

Pay me to shoot it like STI does (contingency program) and I'll think about it.

I would want a 5" I guess because you're not offering a 6", with a light slide, fiber optic front, bomar style rear, grip reduction/stippling, undercut trigger guard....

Apparently beggers can be choosers.

Apparently you don't understand how STI's program works.

You buy a gun, you register, you wear their shirt, and IF you win a major match while doing so, they pay you with free product.

It's not a "here's a lump of cash, now shoot our gun" sort of arrangement. But it is a way of giving back to the shooters who advertise for them. I think it's a sweet deal.

Re: Underground Skunkworks "OPERATOR" Series 2011

Oh yeah, it's a sweet deal, and I certainly don't fault you for doing it - I would too. I just don't think Mike was looking for people to sponser when he made his post. I could be wrong though.

I guess I don't look at it as sponsorship; I look at it as marketing to get your product out there.

STI did a run of aluminum frames a few years ago, great for a carry gun but not very practical for competition

Both STI and SV offer aluminum frames, and there is nothing wrong with them for competition. Some people really love a heavier gun.

Paras are still popular (somewhat) and they have STEEL frames.

Pics should be available within the next couple of weeks....I expect availability within the next month to month and a half....Just a few administrative things to complete with how the guns will be identified, i.e., serial number convention, model markings, etc....

Why not offer the "high-end Operator 5.0" in 10mm AUTO?

It's what the .40S&W really wants to be anyway ...

Good to meet you today, Mike; thanks for taking the time to chat with me, Boltripper, ToddACguy and TxHunter (Thoroughbred Rifles) about your latest products. I'm looking forward to your new precision rimfire bolt actions.

IIRC, some years back STI made them in 10mm, with 10mm-length mags that reportedly worked well. Later they built a .40S&W model off of it, which they currently offer, having discontinued the 10mm flavor.

Re: Underground Skunkworks "OPERATOR" Series 2011

I had a custom built STI with a 10mm and 40 barrels, the 10mm was great to shoot, I even killed a whitetail deer at 15 yards with it. It is a real shame that the 40 now overshadows the 10mm. I think this pistol will be a great addition to the Skunkworks lineup

You just talked me into offering a 10mm with and interchangeable 40S&W barrel....

Just out of curiosity, do most barrels that are "pre=chambered" in .40 S&W have sufficient material to chamber them in 10mm instead, or is a different barrel blank required?

Obviously the mags are the same..as my STI will gladly take ammo at 1.180" and my friend's will take ammo at 1.200".

Yes, you can chamber a 40 barrel in 10mm. It is the same barrel, just a deeper chamber.

a 40 S&W is just a shortened 10mm, they designed the 40 S&W off the 10mm.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10mm_Auto
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/40_S&W

You can convert any 40 S&W barrel into a 10mm you just need to ream the barrel deeper. The gun I had that had with the 10 and 40 barrels, both started off as short chambered Scheumann barrels, one was reamed to 40 S&W and the other to 10mm. I have loaded some loads out to 1.25 in my 40 when I ran Clays loads in my STI and SVI mags

Re: Underground Skunkworks "OPERATOR" Series 2011

That's what I figured. I hadn't ever actually measured the chamber so I wasn't sure if there was enough "meat" in the blank to chamber it deeper.

1.250" is pretty long. Mine will take 1.185" or so in my factory STI barrel.

Yep. I know two guys who bought .40S&W Springfield 1911s back when they had these. Because SA didn't offer a 10mm model, they promptly had the .40 barrels reamed out to 10mm-specs. They did increase the recoil spring weights with Wolff XP springs. One had some Colt Delta 10mm mags, using Wolff XP springs in them, as I recall, while the other used Metalform's 10mm mags. The guns reportedly ran fine. The one guy likes his 10mm reloads REALLY hot, trying to reach Double Tap Ammo levels (e.g., 200gns @ 1275fps-1300fps)

Or, another way to do it is just to get a "switch barrel" set-up in one caliber or the other.

That's what a lot of Glock 10mm owners do now with their G20 or G29. They pick up separate aftermarket barrels from, e.g., KKM, Bar-Sto or LWD in .40S&W - or .357Sig or 9x25 Dillon - drop them in, and blaze away.

All these cartridges are 10mm case-derivatives and all work using the stock Glock 10mm mags and recoil assembly. All you need are the spare barrels.

I have a stock-length .40 barrel from LWD for my G29. Works fine. I can load up ten .40 cartridges in the G29's 10mm mags and they all feed and fire with no issues.

This same concept should work with a 10mm 1911 or with any other properly set up 10mm-platform: one gun capable of running mulitple 10mm-derivative calibers by means of a simple barrel-swap.

Better still, it's cost-effective since only the extra barrels are needed.
