You just talked me into offering a 10mm with and interchangeable 40S&W barrel....

Just out of curiosity, do most barrels that are "pre=chambered" in .40 S&W have sufficient material to chamber them in 10mm instead, or is a different barrel blank required?
Obviously the mags are the same..as my STI will gladly take ammo at 1.180" and my friend's will take ammo at 1.200".

Yes, you can chamber a 40 barrel in 10mm. It is the same barrel, just a deeper chamber.

Yep. I know two guys who bought .40S&W Springfield 1911s back when they had these. Because SA didn't offer a 10mm model, they promptly had the .40 barrels reamed out to 10mm-specs. They did increase the recoil spring weights with Wolff XP springs. One had some Colt Delta 10mm mags, using Wolff XP springs in them, as I recall, while the other used Metalform's 10mm mags. The guns reportedly ran fine. The one guy likes his 10mm reloads REALLY hot, trying to reach Double Tap Ammo levels (e.g., 200gns @ 1275fps-1300fps)
Or, another way to do it is just to get a "switch barrel" set-up in one caliber or the other.
That's what a lot of Glock 10mm owners do now with their G20 or G29. They pick up separate aftermarket barrels from, e.g., KKM, Bar-Sto or LWD in .40S&W - or .357Sig or 9x25 Dillon - drop them in, and blaze away.
All these cartridges are 10mm case-derivatives and all work using the stock Glock 10mm mags and recoil assembly. All you need are the spare barrels.
I have a stock-length .40 barrel from LWD for my G29. Works fine. I can load up ten .40 cartridges in the G29's 10mm mags and they all feed and fire with no issues.
This same concept should work with a 10mm 1911 or with any other properly set up 10mm-platform: one gun capable of running mulitple 10mm-derivative calibers by means of a simple barrel-swap.
Better still, it's cost-effective since only the extra barrels are needed.
