I've been looking over the many different options for a high end scope for my first build, and I think that USO would probably be the best option for my needs. My build is will fire a cartridge based on the 7wsm cartridge, and I'll use it to ranges out to 1000 yards. I wanted to know which magnification would be best, 3.2-17x or 3.8-22x? Or maybe even the 5-25x? It's about a 500 dollar upgrade from 3.2-17 up to 3.8-22, and then another 200 dollars on top of that to get the 5-25. Is the extra coin worth it, or will 3.2-17 cut it at 1000 yards? I found a thread earlier where some people commented that there 3.2-17 magnification wasn't enough power, so I wanted to get some more opinions.

(If there are other threads that have already gone over this, sorry, just feel free to point me in the right direction.)

17x is more than enough. Consider and compare the length and bulk of the two scopes before you make a final decision.

I would personally lean towards the 22x if 1000 yards was my main intention but 17x will do it.

It depends: during the hot days of summer I end up dialing down and shooting between 12x and 15x most of the time. But some days, when there is no mirage, having 22x is convenient. There's no correct answer.

I see your point. I've read that some of the guys on here like to keep it to a relatively minimum power range because of the mirage issue. I've never shot past 400 yards myself, so once I get this build together I'll be exploring completely new territory. I guess what it comes down to is do I want to pay for the convenience of having the 22x on a good day. I'm still not sure.

Re: USO 3.2-17x or 3.8-22x?

I went with the 3.2-17x

The 22x is five CM longer and four ounces heavier than the 17x. In reality I didn't think I would need the extra 5x for "tactical" shooting to 1K. If I was shooting F-Class I would probably sway the other way.

I am moving "up" from a 4-14x.

I have a 3.2x17 and a 3.8x22 SN3. You will be happy with either scope. I prefer the 3.8x22. I like seeing as much detail on the target as possible. I am currently waiting for a new 3.8x22 to replace my 3.2x17. To me it is worth the 500 dollars extra.
