For those who don't already know, Upper Nisqually Sportsman'sClub has monthly practical/precision rifle matches on the first Saturday of each month. Ranges used are from about 90-550 yards, entry fee is $20. Most matches require 50-75 rounds. Guests are welcome, first time shooters have to attend a one time orientation/safety briefing that starts at 08:30, match starts at 10:00. I just wanted to mention that these matches are very welcoming to new shooters. This is a great way for the less experienced shooters to get out, meet new people and learn a lot about shooting in matches. We also set up the matches so that even the most experienced "big time" shooters have to really work hard to get a good score.

The Board of Directors at Upper Nisqually Sportsman's Club has agreed to help us expand so more people can attend the practical rifle matches. To this end, they are allowing us to use both the 550 and 100 yard ranges at the same time. It is our hope that by using both ranges, we can shorten the wait time between shooting stages, and allow more people to attend the matches. The September 2013 match will be our initial match using both ranges. Our commitment to the board is that we will be off the 100 yard range by 2:00 PM, so it can be returned to use by other club members.
Here are the courses of fire for the September match. We will run the third stage on the 550 yard range if time permits.
We are opening up the reservation list now to the first 30 shooters to sign in. If our timing works out as planned, we will continue to add spaces for more shooters as long as we can honor our commitment to be off the ranges at the agreed on times.

September 2013 match – 550 yard range setup
T1 - 200 yards left – 10” round
T2 - 200 yards right – 6” square
T3 - 270 yards – 10” round

Stage 1 Swinging platform 12 rounds / 9 targets/ 18 points possible 90 seconds
Shooters will start standing with the rifle staged on the swinging platform with the rifle UNLOADED. Upon the start signal the shooter will have 90 seconds to load their rifle and engage targets T1-T9 in order with a minimum of 1 round and a maximum of 2 rounds per target. The shooter is only required to engage each target once; however, they may use their extra rounds to re-engage a target immediately after a miss. The shooter may not engage a target, move on to a new target, and then re-engage a previous target. First round hits are worth 2 points, second round hits worth 1 point.
Stage 2 Rooftop / barricade 15 rounds / 12 targets / 24 points possible 120 seconds
Shooters will start in the over-watch position on the rooftop with up to 3 rounds loaded in the rifle (chamber closed, on safe). Upon the start signal the shooter will engage the 3 round targets from near-to-far (T1, T3 & T4) with 1 round each target. Hits are worth 2 points. Once the shooter has engaged the three round targets they will reposition (RIFLE WILL BE EMPTY) to the designated barricade ports, reload with up to 12 rounds and engage targets T1-T9 IN REVERSE ORDER (T9-T8-T7 etc.). The shooter will engage the targets with a minimum of 1 round and a maximum of 2 rounds per target. The shooter is only required to engage each target once; however, they may use their extra rounds to re-engage a target immediately after a miss. The shooter may not engage a target, move on to a new target, and then re-engage a previous target. First round hits are worth 2 points, second round hits worth 1 point.
Stage 3 KYL rack 4 rounds / 4 targets / 10 points possible 30 seconds
Shooters will start in the prone position with their rifle loaded with up to 4 rounds (chamber closed, on safe). Upon the start signal shooters will have 30 seconds to engage the targets at the 400+ yard KYL rack, largest to smallest. Stop when you want, but miss and you lose all points and the stage is over. Target sizes are 10” round, 8”round, 8.5” x5.5 rectangle and a 6” square. 10” is worth 1 point, 8” is worth 2 points, rectangle is 3 points and the 6” square is worth 4 points.
ON THE 100 YARD RANGE
1. Standards drill
10" round =1 point
8" round =2 points
6" square =3 points
mini rectangle (2"x3")= 1 point
mini diamond (3"x5")= 1 point

Begin in low ready position with up to 6 rounds loaded in rifle. Must engage each string in the same direction, but shooter can designate either R-L, or L-R. After start signal, engage each large target offhand, unsupported with only 1 round each, then transition to kneeling position, and engage each large target with only 1 round each. Rifle's action MUST be open during the transition to seated position, or stage ends at that point. Shooter reloads AFTER getting into seated position with up to 5 rounds, and engages each large target with only 1 round each. Shooter then goes to prone position, and engages each mini target with only 1 round each.
2. OH BALLS!! (or golf balls at the parapet)
10 rounds, 90 seconds, 20 points possible
There will be a rack of tethered golf balls at the 100 yard line
Shooter begins with empty rifle at low ready, and a magazine with up to 10 rounds in it staged on the parapet level on which they choose to begin. The objective is to hit the most stationary golf ball furthest to the left on the rack of golf balls.
After the start signal, shooter will fire only 3 rounds from each of the three levels of the parapet (total of 9 rounds), then shooter may go prone to fire one last round around the end of the parapet prop. Each golf ball struck is worth 2 points.

NOTE: After both squads of shooters have completed stages 1-4, we will clear off the 100 yard range so other club members can use it. We will then return to the 550 yard range, and if there is enough time, we will shoot the Know your limits rack stage. We have to be off the 100 yard range by 2 PM, and off both ranges by 4 PM, so help clearing the ranges of plates and mounting racks will be greatly appreciated.
As we will be running two different ranges, we will need more help with scoring and spotting. Anyone willing to help Unknown and I do this throughout the match will have a $10 entry fee. Please let us know ahead of time if you would be willing to help. We need about 8 people to help us run the ranges efficiently. That way, we can have 2 people helping on each range, while two more people are getting ready to shoot, or clearing off from shooting. This way the people helping will really only be helping run the ranges for half of the match.
This will be the first time we will run two ranges, and depending on shooter feedback, we may continue using two ranges, we may stop using two ranges, or we may even use two ranges and incorporate some pistol shooting on the 100 yard range. Your input is important, as you, the shooters are our "customers". Therefore, your input lets us know the direction you would like us to head with this endeavor.
We hope that by using the 100 yard range, there will be less waiting between shooting, and we will be able to have either more shooting, or matches that run faster with less waiting time. If this all works out as we hope, we will be able to do away with the reservation list, and simply open the matches to all who wish to shoot. Your patience, and input will be immensely helpful as we move forward with these ideas.

We had another great match at UNSC yesterday! I really want to thank all of the ROs that helped Unknown and myself run this match so well. Without their help this match would not have been possible.
Congratulations are in order to AtOne for his 4th win in a row! I also want to congratulate Team RBros for locking up the top 4 spots in the match, good shooting guys.
We had 9 new shooters this month and hopefully they will return next month and shoot with us again as you are all welcome back.
After talking to Unknown yesterday we are both in agreement that the two separate ranges we used worked out very well and we are going to ask the club for continued use of both ranges.
I had a blast yesterday, and learned a good lesson. ALWAYS update the weather conditions in your ballistics app before writing down your dope for the targets. I was .2 mils off of what I should have been because I forgot to do that. Lesson learned!
Now on to the scores.
Stage 1 was the golf balls from various positions at 100 yards, stage 2 was the swinging platform, stage 3 was the rooftop to barricade and then stage 4 was the know your limits rack.

This is the tentative course of fire for the October 19th match as U.N.S.C. There may be a few small changes in target distance and size, but the general course of fire will remain the same.
100 Yard range
Barricade or Rooftop stage
There will be two shooting areas. At shoot area 1, there will be a 50% IPSC target at about 100 yards. At shoot area 2, there will be either a barricade, or a rooftop. On either side of the barricade or rooftop there will be a 6" square, and an 8" round target (four targets at shoot area 2).
Shooter will load with one round, and wait at low ready. After the start signal, the shooter will fire one round only, offhand at the 50% target. They will then move to the barricade or rooftop and fire 1 round only at the two targets from around the right side of the prop, then fire 1 round only at the two targets from around the left side of the prop. They will repeat this sequence so they will have fired a total of 4 rounds from each side of the prop. Shooters are required to use cover and this will likely entail going weak side on one side of the prop.
Shooter's muzzle MUST GO DOWNWARD when changing sides on the barricade. If the shooter's muzzle goes upward during the side to side transition, it will be a stage DQ. (Muzzle of a loaded rifle pointing over the top of the impact area)
Each target is worth 2 points: 9 rounds/90 seconds, 18 possible points.
100 yard range
Underneath

The prop for this stage is to simulate shooting underneath an obstacle like a vehicle. There is about 10 inches between the ground, and the prop. The prop looks similar to a 4 inch thick table about 3.5x4 feet.
Shooter will begin at low ready with 3 rounds loaded. Chamber may be loaded.
After the start signal, shooter will fire one round on each target offhand, then with an empty rifle move into position to shoot from underneath the prop. From underneath the prop, shooter will fire one round on each target moving from right to left, and one round on each target moving from left to right.
Each hit is worth two points. 9 rounds, 90 seconds. 18 points possible.
550 yard target placement
6” square – 100yd left
5.5”x8.5” rectangle – 200yd right
8” round – 225yd left
10” round – 300yd center right
10” round – 315yd center left
50% IPSC – 350yd left
66% IPSC – 400yd center
66% IPSC – 475yd right
66% IPSC – 530yd
Waving arm target – 350yd
6 target tree – 250-350 (I will know for sure after testing)
Parapet/waving arm target 6 rounds 18 points possible 45 seconds
The waving arm target has three different target areas worth two different values. The large IPSC center target is worth 1 point per hit and the smaller waving targets are worth 3 points per hit. The shooter will start standing behind the parapet with the rifle loaded with up to 6 rounds and the bolt open (semi-auto on safe). Upon the start signal shooter will engage the target with 2 rounds from each of the parapet levels. The shooter may engage any of the 3 target areas they wish, but they may not engage the same target area two times in a row.
Targets on the arms are 6-8 inch round.
6 Target Tree 6 rounds 18 points possible 45 seconds
Shooters will start in the prone position with up to 6 rounds loaded and the bolt closed. Upon the start signal shooters will have 45 seconds to engage the 6 targets on the tree. Targets are worth 3 points per hit. Hits will only count if the target makes a full swing to the opposite side of the tree stand. Targets on the dueling tree are about 4 inches square.
Barricade 9 rounds 18 points possible 120 seconds
Shooters will start standing behind the barricade with up to 9 rounds loaded and the bolt open (semi-auto on safe). Upon the start signal the shooter will engage targets T1-T3 from one of the top levels of the barricade. The shooter will then move to the designated enclosed ports (NO PRONE) and engage targets T4-T9. Shooters will engage each target only once. Targets are worth 2 points each.
Over the Barrel 9 rounds 18 points possible 120 seconds
Shooters will start from the weak hand prone position from either the right or left hand side of the barrel (i.e. right handed shooter will start on the left side of the barrel). Upon the start signal shooter will engage targets T1-T3, move to the top of the barrel to engage targets T4-T6, then move to the other end of the barrel (i.e. right hand shooter on right side of barrel), go prone and engage targets T7-T9. While in the prone position around the ends of the barrel the shooters must use the barrel as cover (at least 80% of body). Shooters will engage each target only once. Targets are worth 2 points each.
As we did last month, we would like to have some people help RO the various stages. RO's have a $10 entry fee, and shoot when it is convenient for them. We will again assign the shooting order so we can keep shooters moving quickly through the firing lines.

Shooter's muzzle MUST GO DOWNWARD when changing sides on the barricade. If the shooter's muzzle goes upward during the side to side transition, it will be a stage DQ. (Muzzle of a loaded rifle pointing over the top of the impact area)
Each target is worth 2 points: 9 rounds/90 seconds, 18 possible points.

The prop for this stage is to simulate shooting underneath an obstacle like a vehicle. There is about 10 inches between the ground, and the prop. The prop looks similar to a 4 inch thick table about 3.5x4 feet.
Shooter will begin at low ready with 3 rounds loaded. Chamber may be loaded.
After the start signal, shooter will fire one round on each target offhand, then with an empty rifle move into position to shoot from underneath the prop. From underneath the prop, shooter will fire one round on each target moving from right to left, and one round on each target moving from left to right.
Each hit is worth two points. 9 rounds, 90 seconds. 18 points possible.
550 yard target placement
6” square – 100yd left
5.5”x8.5” rectangle – 200yd right
8” round – 225yd left
10” round – 300yd center right
10” round – 315yd center left
50% IPSC – 350yd left
66% IPSC – 400yd center
66% IPSC – 475yd right

Waving arm target – 350yd
6 target tree – 250-350 (I will know for sure after testing)
Parapet/waving arm target 6 rounds 18 points possible 45 seconds
The waving arm target has three different target areas worth two different values. The large IPSC center target is worth 1 point per hit and the smaller waving targets are worth 3 points per hit. The shooter will start standing behind the parapet with the rifle loaded with up to 6 rounds and the bolt open (semi-auto on safe). Upon the start signal shooter will engage the target with 2 rounds from each of the parapet levels. The shooter may engage any of the 3 target areas they wish, but they may not engage the same target area two times in a row.
Targets on the arms are 6-8 inch round.
6 Target Tree 6 rounds 18 points possible 45 seconds
Shooters will start in the prone position with up to 6 rounds loaded and the bolt closed. Upon the start signal shooters will have 45 seconds to engage the 6 targets on the tree. Targets are worth 3 points per hit. Hits will only count if the target makes a full swing to the opposite side of the tree stand. Targets on the dueling tree are about 4 inches square.
Barricade 9 rounds 18 points possible 120 seconds
Shooters will start standing behind the barricade with up to 9 rounds loaded and the bolt open (semi-auto on safe). Upon the start signal the shooter will engage targets T1-T3 from one of the top levels of the barricade. The shooter will then move to the designated enclosed ports (NO PRONE) and engage targets T4-T9. Shooters will engage each target only once. Targets are worth 2 points each.
Over the Barrel 9 rounds 18 points possible 120 seconds
Shooters will start from the weak hand prone position from either the right or left hand side of the barrel (i.e. right handed shooter will start on the left side of the barrel). Upon the start signal shooter will engage targets T1-T3, move to the top of the barrel to engage targets T4-T6, then move to the other end of the barrel (i.e. right hand shooter on right side of barrel), go prone and engage targets T7-T9. While in the prone position around the ends of the barrel the shooters must use the barrel as cover (at least 80% of body). Shooters will engage each target only once. Targets are worth 2 points each.
As we did last month, we would like to have some people help RO the various stages. RO's have a $10 entry fee, and shoot when it is convenient for them. We will again assign the shooting order so we can keep shooters moving quickly through the firing lines.

We had another great match at UNSC today! I want to thank the RO's for all of their work. Without them we would not be able to put on a match like this every month. Here are the scores from today:
Stage 1 was 100 yard range barricade, stage 2 was 100 yard underneath, stage 3 was 550 yard range over the barrel, stage 4 was 550 yard barricade, stage 5 was parapet/wavy arm target and stage 6 was fast barricade.

Here are the match results for last Saturdays UNSC Practical Rifle Match. This was a deceptively difficult match as most can see from the scores. I had a great time (even though I sucked) and found several things that I need to work on. I think I can safely say that every shooter was challenged more than they thought they would be.
Stage 1 was the 550 yard dog house, stage 2 was the 550 yard barricade, stage 3 was the 100 yard parapet and stage 4 was the 100 yard barricade.

Definitely a challenging match, more so then met the eye but a ton of fun! You two do a great job with these, worth the travel!

Start standing behind an empty rifle on the ground. Upon the start signal the shooter will go prone, load and then engage the targets in REVERSE order (T10, T9, T8, T7, T6 etc..) using only reticle hold over. The optic turrets may be set to any setting prior to the start of the stage, but, once the stage has started optic setting may not be changed. Hits are worth 2 points each.
Standing unsupported to seated supported 10 rounds 20 points possible 120 seconds
Start standing with 10 rounds loaded in the rifle at the low ready. Upon the start signal engage the two 6” squares at 100 yards (T1, T2) from the standing unsupported position and then transition to the seated supported position utilizing the tripod and engage the remaining targets in order (T3, T4, T5, T6 etc..). Hits are worth 2 points each.

Hey, just had an idea for a practice barricade (or a lightweight portable match barricade). How about one of those mutli-position ladders? You could shoot from various heights off the steps, or from the sloping sides of the legs. You could set it up as a low, medium, or high horizontal surface (or throw a piece of plywood on top for a solid surface). Pretty lightweight and very portable. Lots of options for strong side and weak side.
That could work really well...

We had a couple of additions, deletions to the match for 07 December, and there is an opening if anyone wants in.
Also, we just took delivery of two more 12 inch round targets, three 12 inch squares, and one 66% IPSC with a hostage flapper...

Uhhg!!! I'm going to have to miss the match tomorrow,... While you guys are having fun in the cold, I'll be sitting at the mechanics getting new ball-joints put in the car,... I knew it had to be done and for some reason the cold weather has exacerbated it - every time I make a turn, it sounds like a wounded animal. Have fun you guys/gals!

I will refrain from making comments about "no balls" and other similar comments...oops..darn I guess I did it anyhow. Ryan, it was just too perfect of a setup to let it go...sorry All in jest. We all think you are great, and your presence will be missed. I just hope there isn't any ice on the roads on the way out. I don't mind the cold, but black ice on the roads really does make me nervous.

Hah! While exacerbated balls don't sound like much fun to me,... neither was replacing my car's exacerbated ball-joints,... I was there for 3-1/2 hours,... By the end, even the front desk attendant was apologizing. Turns out they only 'thought' they had the needed parts, and had to have some driven up to Everett from Bellevue,... Grrrr!! In any case, it's done and my car corners like a,... something that corners really well,... Hope you guys had fun!

Good day at the match today. Despite the sub-freezing temperatures and battling the cold, the sun was out and as usual we had little to no wind. The propane heater I brought was quite popular. Next month I'll bring along the fixings to serve everyone some hot chocolate too.

Had a good match at UNSC yesterday even though the temperature never got above freezing! I had a great time and I found another skill that I need to work on more (holdovers). We had a couple of new shooters that were a good bunch of guys to meet and shoot with. Congrats to Eric on another first place finish, good shooting buddy!
On the score sheet I included the last line for the X100 score. I am going to start including this in each months score sheet and I will be keeping track of the scores throughout the 2014 season (like PRS does). The way that this works is the 1st place finishers score is used to determine 100% and then all other shooters percentage is based off of that number. For example, Eric shot 70 points at this match, therefore, all other scores were figured from 70 points being the max score and shooters scores are a percentage of 70. The math looks like this: Shooters score ÷ Highest total score x 100 = X100 score. This is the same system that the PRS uses to track shooter scores. We can use this to track each shooters standings within the club and to track the progress of our shooters during the year.

Yeah - I'd prefer to forget my performance as well. Best part of the day was the drinks at Brunos afterwards. At least my Bloody Mary wouldn't freeze with all the vodka in it. Perhaps this could be the start of a post match tradition.
I knew it was cold when my drinking water started to freeze up during the match. I came home and our well pump had frozen too.
