I have to fly into Dallas TX today, staying in The Colony. Be there til Sunday night. Then back the following Thursday-sun.

I’ll have my wife and 2 young kids. One is getting surgery while down here.

What’s cool to do or go see? I can’t sit around and do jack shit all day.

30 years ago the music and bar scene in Deep Ellum was friggin’ awesome; no idea what’s going on down there now but it may be worth a look: https://www.deepellumtexas.com/

If you happen to be in NE Dallas, swing by Billet Armory in Garland and ask if they have an ETA for the cuts and Cerakote on my G30 slide! 😉

Definitely don’t take your wallet into Scheels.

Rifle Gear is also right down the road from Scheels. Lots of high end stuff and a nice range.
2nd on Hard 8 BBQ. Right in the same area.

The State Fair of Texas is also going on right now.

I haven't been but have heard amazing things about COSM.

I have some friends going there for the Texas/OU game tomorrow. Apparently its better than in person but feels like you are on the sideline.

Top Golf is across Hwy 121 from Sheels and can be fun for the family.

Legacy West/Legacy Hall are cool.

Best of luck on the surgery.

Since you are staying in The Colony, you might go to Riflegear on the southbound side of the Rayburn (SH 121) Tollway.

The have a 100 yard (4 lanes) indoor rifle range. In the shorter ranges, you can rent machine guns. The place is popular and busy.

I'm not being sarcastic, but I would recommend I-20, east or west. Take your pick. Some really interesting ranch country on both sides of the Dallas/Ft Worth metroplex. If you are into sailing, lots of lakes and sailing clubs. Lake Ray Hubbard is a favorite, not a very pretty lake but has some really nice boats. The Texas Motor Speedway is impressive due to its size. We had senior olympics there for several years. The parking lot was big enough to easily do a 5K without even making a complete circle. Good bike shops.

However, as I said, in my little sphere of things, the country outside of the Metroplex is really nice. (if you like gandering at some really nice mid sized ranges. )

Finally and it's a stretch to get there from the Metroplex is the city of Abilene. Nearby is Buffalo Gap. Well worth the time but expect a full day maybe more just to get there, spend a few hours and drive back. It's a 3 hour trip from central Dallas. (196 miles, all interstate)

Ranchman's Ponder Steakhouse in Ponder, Texas (north of Dallas.) BYOB. Call ahead to reserve your baked potato. Not kidding. Also, see the pics of celebrities on the wall who have made a special trip to this restaurant when they are in the area.

First time I went there was mid 90s, had to call ahead to reserve a baked potatoe.

Babes chicken is great. They have a location in Frisco, near The Colony.

Its a little bit of a hump from the colony but in Downtown Dallas is the Dallas World Aquarium. Fun place for everyone. Additionally if you want to venture west the Fort Worth Zoo is truly world class.
I took my kids to the aquarium when they were younger, they loved it. They have an indoor tropical rainforest. You can for three stories up into it. Giant crocs on the bottom, and exotic birds in the canopy. I also recommend this.

Wow thanks for all the replies. Coordinating stuff can be a PITA because twice a day I have to take him (2.5 yr old) into a hyperbaric chamber. Kid is doing well. It was a planned surgery, and we will be back in 6 months doing the exact same thing to finish the issue once this initial surgery is all healed.

First thing, my wife and I were amazed at how polite everyone here is compared to back in IL.

We went to Hard Eights for lunch, then again for dinner. Place is superb. Quick, and delicious. Easy to do with kids…

Rifle gear is badass. I have an FFL and SOT back home and I’m tempted to have these guys ship me some shit. Lot of cool stuff, lot of NFA stuff…I’m going to go back there tomorrow and fondle some stuff, since the kids were kinda nuts yesterday and I got outta there.

Plan is to do the Dallas Aquariim this afternoon. Scheels and legacy West tomorrow.

Then the following week who knows. Probably going to hit the zoo cause the kids love animals.

I guess if you're really bored, you could go watch the Cowboys..............
back when the stadium was first built (15 years ago?) we were building a new datacenter nearby and we got a tour (as a perk i assume).
it is pretty impressive, just the scale of the building (still the largest enclosed dome?).
don't know if it is worth $250 to see it though. :p

So I was going to say there is an awesome burger place next to Scheels. I was there twice on two seperate trips and would 100% go back. Couldn't find it. Looks like it was bought out and s now the Gas Monkey Icehouse.

If it hasn't been said - the sixth floor library museum is a must, for historical reasons.

The jfk stuff is interesting, great way to kill (no pun intended) a morning or afternoon. Deep Ellum is fun, lots of shops, breweries, food, etc… Terry blacks for bbq, I know it’s not exactly local or old school, it’s expensive as shit, but great food. The funny part though is, right across the street is an old school place making fried chicken that smelled amazing. Almost wish we went there instead of Terry Blacks.

He makes a point of it. Wants something to do rather than sit there “doing nothing”.
Brush up on your reading comprehension.
I get it. No offense taken. Done plenty of that. Truth is, I could hack a leg off this kid and he’s still a million miles an hour. He doesn’t want to sit around either…and sitting around doing nothing has its time and place for sure. 2 hrs twice a day in a hyperbaric chamber and both of us are ready to get out and see the city.

He loved the Dallas Aquarium. We were all pretty amazed at it.

Dude I thought growing up that Chicago had some pretty fucked up traffic, roads and interstate systems but I honestly think it’s worse here. Or, maybe it’s because I’m used to how fucked up chi town is, and not used to this.

fucked up traffic, roads and interstate systems

Texas manages traffic different than most places. I actually ran across an article once that claimed other cities send people here to study the roads and traffic management. I forget if it's to learn what to do or what not to do.

You want to see something worse than Dallas come on down to Houston. And Austin is a special animal in it's own right.

Feeder roads ... we treat them like highways next to highways. Most places I've traveled outside of Texas don't have feeders and it's a different mindset from other places.
