What are your favorite 7.62x51 /.308 semi autos

Starline brass, WLR primer, 168SMK/Speer Gold Dot, 43.5gr IMR-4064. Very close to 308FGMM. Also, try IMI 7.62x51 NATO 168gr Semi_Auto Match.

Starline brass, WLR Primer, 175SMK, 42.2gr IMR-4064. Very Close to 308FGMM2.

I liked the SA M1A "Loaded", but had Hell's own time keeping the SA Scope mount stable.

I have just finally gotten my 20" PSA PA-10 up to snuff, but still haven't fired it. The 168 Gold Dot load will be the first handload I use.

The IMI 168gr Razor Core Semi-Auto Match is bang-on accurate (Steel) to 300yd using the Bushnell AR Drop Zone 308 BDC scope in the Savage 11VT.

Mk20 can maybe be found used at the 3500ish mark. Excellent trigger, good ergos and I can sneak mine down to .5ish at 100m with Mk316. Pretty consistent .6s-.8s

I have a Mk I REPR with a ATACR 4-16x42. It is my favorite so far, but I've only owned three AR-10's. It is heavy but runs great and consistently shoots 1 moa with me fumbling the buttons.

AR-10. ArmaLite has a flat-top upper with a Lothar Walther 24" stainless steel barrel. White Oak tuned trigger seals the deal.

The LW Armalites were truly amazingly accurate rifles, mine shot as well as most bolt guns. I finally burned the barrel out.

For just plain coolness, I'm partial to the G3 (never had a real G3 but had a PTR 91). Felt like shooting a giant hole puncher, very satisfying ka-chunk feel to it, and I've just always liked them. Remember the heist shootout scene in Heat?

For a shooter though (I'm picky about accuracy) I prefer the AR platform, which is pretty common and boring these days, but I like the one I have which is a conglomeration of parts done the way I want them. For pure functionality it's a much better combination of accuracy and lighter weight than the 91, M14, etc, along with other advantages like triggers, optics mounting, tunability, etc.

Glad to see some love for the G3.

Years ago attended a DMR-type class with an HK91 using its preferred Australian ball. Was able to hold about 1.5 MOA or less to 500 using a spare HK trigger pack modified by Bill Springfield, along with the 4x Wetzlar and clamp-on mount.

On another occasion, attended an Urban Rifle class as the only 7.62 on a line of AR's. Brought the aforementioned Australian ball as well as some de-linked Israeli MG ammo. Was advised to try the MG stuff as long as it fit into the mags. Some of the bullets were not concentric with the cases although I did load them as long as the fit into the mags. First result was that the ammo shot well in general, although there were some FTF's with the bent rounds. Final result was that I received invaluable experience mortaring / clearing malfs that I never would have experienced if I had used its preferred ammo.

I see this rifle as work-horse that tolerates harsh conditions and performs in a satisfactory manner for hunting or defense. Are there more refined systems these days ? Yep, for sure... but this one is still viable.... Cheers !

Granted there is little “factory” left from this original Recon, but it does fall into $3.5k requirement. Took a bit for it to shoot groups, but I can repeat 3/4”(100m) with GM and even tighter with handloads via 155gr Lapua Scenar with VV fuel behind it... weight- well, you see what glass I have on it ( :) measures in lbs vs oz(s) )- it is a heavy rifle - but if you need an accurate “worker” for 500m + In 762Nato - well, it does it for me...
By comparison, HK91 could NOT get the accuracy of DPMS, with that said- if I had to grab ONLY ONE in SHTF- G3 would be coming with me vs LR308....

Yep ^^^^

Favorite 308. for me is a sturdy semi that doesn't require match ammo to be effective.... Cheers !
