BULLSHIT…….. I got buddies who do welding in the gulf(make 6 figures if they want to) and NEVER went to school for welding. They learned it and got very good at it on their own, and with people that taught them. If you want to be good at something, you gotta put in the legwork

I was looking for a decent job and having about 25'ish years as a master auto tech I thought no prob, I'm where all the cars are, should be simple.
I applied at Huntington Beach Toyota, right on Beach Bl. in the heart of beach area money (those of you that know the area know that you don't live there making only $50k a year, you'll be laughed out of town).
I easily *got* the job since I do have factory Toyota training and had worked at Long Beach Toyota a while back.....it was honestly a gimme, I was in.
When I asked about the pay, I was told $12 a flag hour (book time if your understand that).

After regaining my composure I said "I'm supposed to have my $150k in tools flatbedded here, with 25 years experience and more wallhanging accolades than all your *mechanics* put together and you're going to offer me the privilege of a whopping $12 a fucking hour ?

Needless to say I walked away from that wonderful opportunity.

It’s not about being too good for the jobs, it’s because they literally don’t pay enough, and I’m not just talking flipping burgers.
Look at nursing. $25-$30 an hour as a staff nurse. Totally not worth it for what they do, which is why hospitals have such a hard time keeping nurses. Especially when the travel nurse working there makes $10,000 a month.
My honest opinion is for you to continue to work and grow in welding. It’ll be real good money some day, and when you start your own business you’ll be happier and better off. Looking back in time, all of my friends who went into the trades were making over $75,000 with no student debt by the time they were in their late 20’s early 30’s.
Most people who went to college will never make that amount of money, or if they do, it won’t be until they are much older.

I really would like to be a successful welder, but really I wasnt that good at it in truth, which is why I lost interest. I really did enjoy working in the gun industry, but it seems like the real money there is bidding on contracts to sell guns en-masse, and there seems to be big opportunities going on somewhere between Belarus and Russia right now...
Working at a gun store IS a good job for those who like what they are doing but massive inflation and supply chain problems had to ruin that for pretty much anyone left who was in it for the sport and not just the money. However contractors I know make ALOT more. Im really just trying to get a side gig for the time being because I have all the right connections to start bidding on contracts Im just waiting for my necessary legal paperwork to go through, which as with anything the government does, takes literally forever.

I've been working since I was a child. Growing up on a farm where child slave labor is legal was normal. Fuck off. I never really knew what being a kid was, I started driving a tractor at 7, mowing and raking hay. A short day was 12 hours in the seat. 7am-7pm every day....minimum usually longer, can't count the days that went from 6 am to 3 am.
At 18 I moved out, found a job building houses for $5.75/hour 6 days a week. It was great, we only worked 10 hours a day, it was like being on vacation.
When I first got to Okinawa, we had shop PT twice a week...I wasn't feeling good, I still ran up 15 antenna poles that day doing maintenance, but when we got back to the shop we were supposed to go for a 3 mile run. I told the boss I didn't think I could make it, so he told me to mop the shop. I said, "ok, I'll get it done". 5 minutes later, I'm sitting at the break room table, and he called me out back. Said, "why aren't you mopping the shop? You got a problem with me telling you what to do, because I'm black?" I said, "no, I'm going to do it when everyone gets out of the shop, so they aren't tracking shit everywhere on the wet floor".
He told me he needed to talk to me after everyone left the shop, handed me a beer and apologized for jumping to conclusions. We got along a lot better after that.
This shit makes me angry. Literally race was no where in this conversation and no one has any inkling of an idea of what race of person they are talking to is, because it doesn’t fucking matter.
You want to throw race into it, I’m currently paying a black welder I’m friends with $1200 a day to bolt together fence. The color of the person doing any of this work is so irrelevant.
