Alright, my xbox has died for the 3rd somethin...I am attempting to fix it myself this time as my warranty has run out. It is for the 3 red rings. I have it stripped down with the cpu and gpu cleaned up. Next step is installing thermal paste and new screws and washers to the heatsinks. Anybody had troubles or did similiar fixes? All I know is that for 400 bucks I expected more quality. Damn you Microsoft!!!

Since you don't have a warranty anymore, go for it. Otherwise, see if you have a friend or something that's more experienced with doing these types of fixes. In any case, if you're a real Xbox fan and plan on staying such, get the new 360Slim. I have it. They are supposedly red ring proof, and it's a dream. I even like the little noise it makes when you open the tray. You could always consider switching to PS3.
Edit: I misread your post. I haven't tried this fix, but I did try the penny trick. I know it's worked for some, but didn't work out for me and my dad's xbox. Also here, read this

lol You sound like me. It's addicting, and I may be bias, bu the PS doesn't really do it for me so much anymore. The first game I ever really got into was SOCOM on the PS2. THAT was the shit. I could probably get back into it, but everyone I play with is on the 360 anyway. But yeah, I recommend the slim. It'll make you giddy as a school girl. What do you play?

i was able to prolong mine off&on for a year, after a while it wouldn't last a week.
Broke down an got the xbox 360 Arcade set-up (use your old harddrive & i comes with another controler)

I'm done with the Xbox. Over the years I bought two Pros and an Elite and each one ended up with RROD issue. Multiple rooms, lots of ventilation, and same problem. I did all the hacks on the Pros - heat sink, paste, different brackets/screws, etc and the most they would last is about a year. MS fixed the Elite once and it lasted for a year before it died. Months later I turned it and it worked only to find out that MS had arbitrarily banned it from Xbox Live.
Never again. Taking the other recommendation and buying ammo!

Recently I have been playing Black ops but I also really got into borderlands the last few months. I also have played md1,md2, Halo 3 alot. Gamertag is vervinator.

The slim runs circles around the old one, and it was no slouch in its prime. The on-board wireless on the slim kicks the shit out of that stupid ass antenna thing for the old one, and the fan is so quiet that you'd swear it isn't on. The slim cools far better than the old 360, and as such doesn't slow down or glitch out during long periods of intense play.
I'm sold on the design mods, worth every penny IMHO. Plus the Halo edition looks bitchin and has unique sounds, haha.

They quite literally are RROD proof. Microsoft didn't put any red LEDs in them, so they can't Red Ring
They really do seem to be built a little better than the previous 360s. I'm really hoping my MW2 360 stays around for quite a while though.

Update...After running really really loud for awhile, my xbox red ringed me again. Having spent 20 something bucks for a couple of months of game play I felt I got my monies worth. However I would be damned if the Nazi Zombies would survive on such a night. So at about 12am, when the red rings showed their ugly face, I promptly drove to walmart and bought a new 250 gig console. It is so quiet and compact. Except I moved it and my copy of Battlefield 2 BC was instantly destroyed. Next morning I went to Gamestop, played dumb, and scored a new copy for free.
