Maggie’s Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

For metal, Dimebag Darrel, Zakk Wylde, Zacky Vengeance & Synyster Gates of Avenged Sevenfold, and Herman Li & Sam Totman of Dragonforce. They all could/can play the hell out of a guitar.

Angus Young, because when you hear that rhythm he's playing you can't help but to know exactly who it is and like it.

Stevie Ray Vaughan. Man, I wish I could play with that kind of soul. He didn't play with his fingers, his whole being went into those strings.

I also like listening to Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, Steve Vai, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Randy Rhoads, Slash, and Lincoln Brewster because they can all play really well, and put a lot of work into playing.

I guess my favorites are the players who make you feel something when you hear them play.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Kenny Wayne Shepherd, a youngster, but he plays some rockin' blues.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Steve Vai, Joe Satriani etc are just fucking fluff artists... they know a shit ton of scales and how to go between them and they know techniques to make it all sound good. Its bullshit.

I'd rather listen to a good songwriter than a good guitar player anyday and I say that as a guitar player. Is their skill impressive? sure. Does it sound like anything other than butt metal and classical raped a marshall stack or a mesa boogie amp? no.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

OK, I'm a lot older than most of you young cats. But I'd second the nomination of Chet Atkins and add Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits. Their album, Acoustic Alchemy, was amazing.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Off the top of my head; randy rhoads, jimmy page, eddie van halen, andre segovia, stevie ray vaughan, lester william polfuss(les paul), eric clapton, eric johnson, john petrucci, steve vai, yngwie j malmsteen, dave mustaine, , tom morello, kirk hammett, 'dimebag' darrell, slash.....all of them pioneers of guitar playing in so many ways.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

why hasnt anyone mentioned Django Reinhardt?

dude played with 2 fucking fingers!

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

jimi hendrix because he played upside down, backwards, high as a kite, & still better than anyone before or since.

What he said!

Then :
Slash
Gilmour
SRV

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Chuck Berry ?
BB King..SRV,
and Hendrix

Some guitar players are born good enough to blow your sox off , but only a few can actually grab your soul and pull you in....

Finally, a flame! I thought we were going to make it through this whole thread without a slam. That was a close one!!

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Roy Buchannan ? Mark Knopfler? watch his thumb Dick Dale who mentored Jimi Hendrix? I know these are older but

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Different strokes for different folks; LOTS of great players named here.

But I gotta say - I can't think of ANY player of ANY instrument that is able to show such complete technical mastery.... And at the same time, generate such un-listenable, non-musical, insufferable SHITE as Yngvie Malmsteen.

He's the guitar-playing equivalent of 'Stuart' from MAD TV - "Look what I can do!"

</rant>

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Ralph Macchio can really tear it up...the other guy in this video is pretty good too!

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

You guys ever hear Michael Schenker? Great player but there are so many.

Uli Roth
David Gilmour
yeah, Meniketti is alot of fun as a player and a lyricist
Blackmore to Malmsteen, like going from 4th gear to overdrive on the same car.....
Peter Green on the blues side
Jeff Beck, no one gets the sounds he does
Steve Lukather
Steve Morse

The list just goes on..........

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Andres Segovia
Sabicas
Johnny Shines

Classical and Flamenco guitar just impress the hell out of me. I try to play some from time to time but it just doesn't happen. Those two guys make that shit seem so natural.

Blues guitar speaks to the soul and Johnny Shines captured that voice indescribably.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

This guy used to come crash at my place when they played gigs in Morgantown, WV when I was in college. He was like 16 then.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Jimi Hendrix for me. I also like Stevie ray but nobody did it like Hendrix. Why? You can listen to the same song a hundred times and It's a different song every time. I believe if Hendrix was still alive right now we would be flying in cars instead of driving them. lol

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Clapton
Hendrix
Bo Didley
Santana
Jimmy Page
Van Halen
Chuck Berry

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Can't really say that there IS a "Best". But here are six of my favorites.

David Gilmour of Pink Floyd fame.
Steve Howe of YES.
Neal Schon of Journey. He started with Santana. He was the kid with the big 'Fro and a lot of the guitar leads that Carlos got credit for was actually Neal.
Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
Al Pitrelli of Trans-Siberian Orchetra.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Jimmy Page
Eric Clapton
Jeff Beck
Eric Johnson
Duane Allman
and of course Joe Walsh.

I also have to admit that Zack Wylde can play the shit outta a guitar. Not a big fan but he has serious skillz.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Victor Wooten; because he makes the electric base a lead/solo instrument. And Bela Fleck; because he's the only one I know who can play Bach on a Banjo.

Fact. I heard him in concert and was blown away. One thinks bluegrass when you hear the word "banjo"...right up to the point you hear Fleck. Then you think, "genius."

Dittos on that.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Hendrix by a long shot........Have never seen anyone since he died that played a geetar like it was born as an attachment to his body.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

David Gilmour: the "Wish You Were Here" album introduced me to something I loved but never put words to for 20 years. Evocative, to say the least.

Eric Clapton: Good slowhand guitar, but more because he can match voice and lyrics so perfectly. Think the original "Layla", the deeply personal "Tears in Heaven", and a great interpretation of the old "Cocaine." Excellence need not be flashy.

Either of the Vaughans: by the time I realized I loved the more rocking Blues, these guys were making it FUN!!!

Mark Knopfler: as evocative as Gilmour, and like Clapton a master at matching the lyrics (one of my FAVORITE writers along with Ian Anderson). The "Brothers in Arms" album was a great work as a whole, while the funky opening to "Money for Nothing" is a different approach which matches the attitude of the tongue-in-cheek song.

Can't decide who my favorite rocker type guitarist is. I'm impressed with a lot of good sounds that are probably simple chord progressions. The sounds of some AC/DC, Bad Company, Free (well, every band whatsizname Rodgers has ever been with), Who, and ... the list probably has five others if I think about it.

Sorry, I lived through the Jimi era, and I love his stuff A LOT but I like these other ax-artists better.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Tommy Emmanuel hands down
even better than Chet Atkins

Duane Allman was pretty good too

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Roy Buchannan was mentioned seen him two times Impressive! Saw Robin Trower about a few months ago and they said show was being cancelled he passed out backstage and the EMTs were called then about an hour later He appeared and the show went on. Seems he cancelled a tour in the US some years ago due to health reasons. Seen Roy and Trower maybe back in 78-79 in the same year at Syria Mosque in Pgh. Made for an excellent year

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

I would have to say that Mark Knopfler is my favorite. Cleanest of any, in my opinion. Just listen to the sultans of swing solos.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

-Eddie Van Halen
-Eric Clapton
-Stevie Ray Vaughn
-Richie Sambora
-Jimmy Hendrix

The order doesn't matter much when you have so much god-given talent. Have seen Van Halen and Bon Jovi live twice in their glory days. Eddie plays a good 15 minutes of solo work and Sambora kicks ass too - I love his blues/rock.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Gary Rossington, can do magic with a guitar.
Allen Collins, jump 4 feet in the air and never miss a beat on Free Bird. Those two were great together.

Billy Gibbons cant beleave he hasnt been mentioned or i missed it. A natural, makes it look so easy.

Malcolm Young often overlooked because of that other guy.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Why, because I think he is extremely creative and inventive without overpowering the rest of the band.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Im into blues/classic rock my top 3 list would have to be
Eric Clapton
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Duane Allman
I have anklonsing spondilitis (arthritis in my back) and for a time the pain kept me from realy doing anything I couldnt shoot, hunt, fish or do anything and I the only thing I had to look forward to was the Derek and the Dominoes CD in my truck, I'll bet it stayed there for 8 months. Luckly the Doc's got things under control and I can do the things I like again and now I have a daughter named Layla

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

1. Eddie Van Halen

2. Stevie Ray Vaughn

3. Jimi Hendrix

Why the best? Just my opinion, I'm not a musician but I know what my ears like. The first 2 I've scene play live and I've scene many. The last one I saw play live through Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Steve Vai is the "other Guy" and also did the dub overs with Ry Cooder
