Best 5.56 grain for 1:7 SPR

Hey guys, I’m building my Daniel Defense DDM4 V7 into an SPR. It comes with a 16” 1:7 barrel that I’ll be throwing a suppressor onto soon. I’ve had a lot of fun shooting at my local range’s steel range up to 500 meters and would like to get better at it. My question is, what grain 5.56 is best for long distance shooting with my 16” 1:7 barrel? Also, is OTM good to go with? I’m wondering if the open tip affects accuracy.

Thanks in advance!

Gouges in Freebore

I built a .223 Rem about 18 months ago and it has been a great shooter. Once i found a load it likes, it can shoot .5 MOA all day. I use it for my F-TR matches with a consistent 197-198 out of 200 at both 600 and 800. The barrel now has appx 1500 rounds through it and still shooting as good as it did at 500 rounds.

When helping a friend figure out an issue with his barrel, i used my borescope to get some pictures of the inside of my barrel as an example. What i saw in my own barrel kinda took me by surprise. Below is a picture of my freebore with several “gouges”. Given that they are evenly spaced, i am assuming they are left over from the original reaming process. Just wondering if anyone has seen this before and can help me confirm and understand where the gouges came from. I am very cautious with my cleaning process and use a very effective bore guide. Again, this rifle/barrel shoots .5 MOA so it doesnt appear to be having any negative effect on accuracy.

Action is the Zermatt Origin
Barrel is the Criterion bull barrel chambered in .223 match. It is a prefit with barrel nut.

Accessories Impact prefit barrels,used. Cheap.

Looking to get some of these off my rack. Instead of binning them, does anyone want one? They all probably need to be set back. If you’re a DIY guy or learning to do this stuff, these might be a good way to learn on the cheap. The 2 with less than 2000 rounds on them are still good for practice but once I take them off, I never have time to put them back on and keep messing with them.

All four are chambered by Wade Stuteville. Alpha reamer for the BRA. Not sure on the CM reamer but it was throated for Hornady factory ammo. All impact pre-fits, 26”, 5/8-24 muzzle.

6BRA, CRB COMP (1” muzzle), 1527 rounds. $100 SPF
6BRA, Bartlein, (.95” muzzle), 1274 rounds. $100 SPF
6BRA, Bartlein, (.95” muzzle), 2757 rounds. $30. SPF
6CM, Bartlein, (.95” muzzle), 2707 rounds. $30 SPF

Prices are shipped. Don’t care on pay method.

If the economy is so great, why all the lay-offs?

Many big companies are laying off. I remember back in the mid 80s seeing many reports, 340K new private sector jobs had to be added each quarter to just keep up with those entering the work force. The elephant behind door # 3 is now outing its self. The national debt, funded & unfunded, is again pushing for war.

Lastly, my project, Rem 541S. The installed barrel is bare steel, can be blued or coated with black chrome or something. I also have another stock and factory barrel with all the parts to rebuild the rifle if ever need be including another trigger and another bolt. Shot Eley black box real well so I left it alone. It's not the prettiest 541s, but it's a shooter with spare parts.

WAR knives...

Time to quit your belly aching, let's see those war blades!

We're not talking about "which" blade you'd bring or want to bring nor are we talking about your "show" piece. This is a thread about knives that have been there, done that, and made it back to tell a story...

Fair disclosure- they're likely well loved but likely not going to be pretty..

I'll start it off...

That's been hand washed countless times but still can't get rid of the Iraqi "moon dust". In case there's any question of this knife's pedigree... here she be in her original/natural environment...

And here's where it's at now...

She's been abused and seen some things but I'll never get rid of or sell this knife that likely comes across as a piece of crap to anybody else that looks at it. Not sure if it's apparent but I did end up removing one of the retention straps along the ways intentionally.

Quacumque Sunt Vera

Apparently, the president of my undergraduate Alma Mater, Northwestern University, resigned today, Newsmax is indicating that it is after GOP pressure... I gather in the form of funding cuts, etc. as a result of their antisemitic positions and the fallout from the riots in 2023.

What a difference several decades makes. For the longest time since I attended there, the Jewish community had a strong presence. The Binai Brith Hillel foundation was doinant on campus. Now, I see that NU has a campus in QATAR of all places. WOW! That would never have happened when I was there.

Then again, NU was the home of disgraced Electrical Engineering Assoc. Prof. Arthur Butz, who wrote the book "The Hoax of the 20th Century," in which he claims the Holocaust never happened. I was attending NU right when he published that book. Oh, the frenzy that ensued. At the time, he shared a double office suite with my EE professor. Not for long. My prof got out, leaving Butz on his own. They were afraid the office suite would be firebombed, Never was, though, Butz was "tenured" so they couldn't fire him. But, IIRC, he never made it to "full professor..." just "Associate prof."

"Whatsoever Things are true," indeed.
