RFI on Ham Radios

Perhaps I should just go ahead and tag @Gunfighter14e2 on this post from the get-go but I had a question about purchasing one's first Ham radio.

For a bit of housekeeping- I've mentioned it here before but I had gotten my technician ticket a number of years ago (it's still current) and haven't done anything with it. Truth be told (and I might have said this before) but I pursued getting my license as just an alternative from drinking beer and arguing with folks here in the Pit. Reckon I thought I'd be spending my time better learning something new.

Only problem is I never didn't anything with it once I got my license initially. I had read that the volunteer testers often times would allow someone to "test up" and see if they could pass the exam for the higher license (and dang rabbit I would have passed the 'General" exam with flying colors given the opportunity) but the event I found myself in only allowed testing for the Tech license.

Alright- moving on, I'm approaching the point where I'll need to (if nothing else) renew my license with the FCC (which they're now charging for as of recent). I don't want to necessary squander my previous attempts of acquiring knowledge but I'm also struggling with renewing my license if I haven't so much have touched a HAM radio in almost 10 years.

I'm as introverted as they come but I have had it in my head that I owed it to myself to at least give this hobby an honest shake and see where that takes me.

That said- I'm looking at two polar ends of the spectrum/price point. The models I'm looking at are both handheld & triband but their prices are vastly different...

The models I'm looking at are:

This Kenwood on the "high" end: https://www.kenwood.com/usa/com/amateur/th-d75a/

and the "lower end" being this particular Yaseu, the VX-6R: https://www.yaesu.com/jp/en/products/ama_handheld.html

On one hand- since I haven't done jack squat with my HAM ticket for over half a decade- part of me wants to just be dismissive and cut my losses. If I really felt contrary- I'd buy the Yaseu and run away with my asian princess.

But- that just doesn't seem to be how it works right?

If you buy beef by the percentage of how much cow it encompasses, I have some questions...

Nothing too clever with the title but being direct- I'm looking at purchasing either a 1/4 or 1/2 cow this fall and was looking for some thoughts/experiences from others that have done such (for those that haven't, yes- this really is a thing)

As a bit of housekeeping (as the devil is always in the details)... now that I'm in a house I have a 20 cu. ft. upright freezer that I recently purchased and I'm looking at purchasing either a 1/4 or 1/2 a cow. From what I'm seeing in my research on the topic- a 1/2 cow should take about 8-10 cubic feet so approximately half of what I have available in the new freezer.

That said- stated numbers and realistic numbers don't always align and I keep looking inside this freezer and have to believe that 1/2 cow (~260lbs of beef if my research is accurate) is going to take up far more than just half of this freezer regardless of what the Internet says it will. If you have any experience with this type of purchase- I'd like to hear your experience.

The other question that comes to mind is regardless of whether it's 1/4 or 1/2 cow- how does one allocate the cuts. There's a farm within a half hour or so from here that participates in this type of thing. Seems that the standard business practice is (1) paying the farmer and (2) paying the butcher they aligned with.

To make things simpler on my question- what I'm seeing is paying the farm around $2K for a half cow's worth of beef & an additional $350-$400 to the butcher the farmer works with to cut it up & package the meat (depending on the cuts/allocation of how the portion of cow is butchered).

For my wife & myself- we'd be primarily interested in choosing the premium cuts (steaks, roasts, straps, etc) and using the rest of the cow towards burger. Just a specific way of saying we'd likely be on the higher end of the butcher costs based off of my experience with butchering deer.

So (I know getting long winded) with the cards now on the table...

(1) If you've purchased cows by the quarter or half, was it worth it
(2) How much space in the freezer did either the quarter or half take and now long did it last you
(3) would you go through the process again
(4) any advice on what cuts to get using this approach & conversely which cuts to avoid.
(5) Any tips on packing the meat for the freezer? I ask that because I'm assuming I'll need to factor in purchasing a high quality vacuum sealer to make this plan of mine work.

Thanks in advance.

6mm vs 6.5mm, not quite beating a dead horse.

I have a Tikka chambered in 308 and the barrel is starting to finally burn out. I am planning on doing a WTO switchlug and getting two barrels spun up. One will be the ol’ NATO potato and there is no way talking me out of that. The second barrel I am going back and forth on 6mm and 6.5mm. It’s mostly between 6gt and 260rem. Open to other suggestions but I’d like to mostly keep it between these two cartridges.

I understand the general advantages to each but looking at how significant those advantages. Both 308 and 6/6.5 barrels will be used in field style matches and local prs matches as well as just shooting for fun. Ranges routinely run out to 1400.

6gt; lighter recoil and the benefit of using Varget with both itself and 308. That is very convenient to only need one powder for both barrels.

260; slightly better wind although very slight from what I see comparing data. The 6.5 high BC bullets do their thing but the higher speeds of 6mm seem to help close that gap. Better splash/strike for making corrections.

So the question for those who have experience with both; Is the recoil reduction that great between the two in a 17ish-19ish lb gun with a suppressor/brake hybrid? And, is the difference in splash enough to make a big enough difference?

I’m sure I’d be fine and adjust to either cartridge but since I’m starting fresh (barrel, bullets, brass, dies) I might as well go with the better option, if any.

Advice for Ladies

If you want someone willing to make a fool of himself simply over the joy of seeing you … buy a dog.

If you want someone who will eat whatever you put in front of him and never say it’s not quite as good as his mother made it, … buy a dog.

If you want someone always willing to go out, at any hour, for as long and wherever you want … buy a dog.

If you want someone to scare away burglars without a lethal weapon that terrifies you and endangers the lives of your family and all the neighbors … buy a dog.

If you want someone who is content to get up on your bed just to warm your feet and whom you can push off it he snores … buy a dog.

If you want someone who will never touch the remote, doesn’t care about football, and can sit next to you and watch a romantic movie … buy a dog.

If you want someone who never criticizes what you do, doesn’t care if you are pretty or ugly, fat or thin, who acts as if every word you say is especially worthy of listening to, and loves you unconditionally, perpetually … buy a dog.

But on the other hand,

If you want someone who will never come when you call,
Ignores you totally when you come home,
Leaves hair all over the place,
Walks all over you,
Runs around all night,
Only comes home to eat and sleep,
And acts as if your entire existence is solely to ensure his happiness,

Then my friend,

Buy a cat.

Interesting read

"His research found that every fallen empire shared the same fatal traits, including top-heavy regimes dominated by elites, fueled by inequality and held together by violence."

He referred to these societies as 'Goliaths,' vast, brittle power structures built on hoarded grain, monopolized weapons and populations trapped in place with nowhere to run.

'History is best told as a story of organized crime,' Kemp said. 'It is one group creating a monopoly on resources through the use of violence over a certain territory and population.'
