So I'm living National Lampoon's Christmas Vacatiom

So my company does reviews and raises at Christmas .My Boss shows up the day before our Christmas Party to give me the talk . " Great job , we appreciate all your hard work " . Then tells me 5 percent is my raise . Not shabby as I'm up in the pay scale . 18 yrs in . Fuck yeah I'll take it .
Fast forward second week O January when the raise hits or not . Hey Boss where's my raise . " No problem you're right I'll fix it . " End of the day " yeah , no . Mistake you don't get that ".
Talk to the VP he says he'll talk to CEO sorry , mistake . 4 bidnit days later . Yeah , nope . 1 percent .
In July I was given a raise for Employee Retention to reflect the wage offset . 4 percent .
They're telling me that oh we made a mistake blah blah blah . How the eff do you tell someone " Merry Christmas , hey this is yours you earned it " then tell them yeah fuck off .

I am a CNC Service Engineer by specialty . I am responsible for all of the maintenance in my plant plus CNC machines in 2 other plants . I am the only Maintenance Lead that launches and manages projects , does cost savings projects , does not rely on outside contractors for my day to day and I could go on .
Time for a new gig . Man I an fuckin Gob Fuckin Smacked .
We did a break down on costs and I save these guys about $5,000 a week just in labor .
Just did a ball screw , nut and bearings replacement . Axis zero offset was off . Instead of doing factory procedure that would have effed up all the TLO's and workshift geometries , I cheated the Z Axis Zero Offset (an encoder pulse value ) and re established thed original Z Zero . Factory tech would have zero's everything and said good luck . These guys are in for a rude awakening .
My subordinate doesn't work OT and bails in the middle of large repairs . Young guy .
Fuck it .

What is happening at McGowan

This barrel is a replacement for a replacement. The first one had drastically undersized muzzle threads. The second one had drastically undersized tennon threads. All showed this same rough threading. The first one had the same bad crown as this one. The second had no crown. I guess when you crown like this. Leave it alone. Lol.

I tried to lap the tendon threads some to remove some of the roughness. Then I ran a patch down, and had to bump the cleaning rod with my palm to get the patch through the crown. The rough threads are crappy, the crown is worse, I wonder what the chamber job and rifling job on the blank looks like for that matter.

I notice no one else sends me barrels with threads that look like this. It's only my assumption that there is a reason.

Barrel Coin - a word to the wise

Just a little info...all (most) premium barrel manufacturers stamp the end of their barrel blanks with their brand, caliber, bore size, twist rate, material used, and sometimes even a production serial number. Other larger mass production manufacturers often do not due to volume and time constraints. If you are ordering a barrel from whatever company you choose to finish the blank, always request or demand that you get that coin for a few specific reasons. First reason is that if there is any problem with the bore in production (and yes, it happens to the best of them), the first thing they will do is ask for this information, so it's a good idea to keep this coin handy until you have determined that all is well. Secondly, it's a surefire way of making sure that you have gotten exactly as you paid for and will ensure you have a record for future purchases. Lastly, if you are an avid shooter and go through a lot of barrels, these are nice to have around. I know that @padom has a ton of these and has already or is in the process of making a table top under a thick coating of urethane out of his collection.

Doug from Camera Land's Day 2 SHOT Show Report

To say that today was insanely busy would be beyond an understatement. I need to maybe bring a skateboard with me next year if I plan another day like today. Talk about logging miles, whew.

I started my day over at GPO. Last year they introduced their 8x32 and 10x32 Rangeguide Binoculars and I was excited to see what they were introducing now.
If you read our Pre-SHOT Show news you already know about their new GPO Spectra™ Reflex Dot: The Next Generation of a Reflex is Here, however, they did not disappoint with new products:

GPO 15-45x60 Tactical Spotting Scope with FFP Reticle. They obviously have been listening what folks have been asking and asking for.

GPOTAC 6x 4.5-27x50i FFP - LR PRO - has entered the high magnification first focal plane scope market with its new premium tactical riflescope, the GPOTAC 4.5-27x50i FFP. Designed for professional use, as well as shooters and hunters who demand the very best in long distance and tactical shooting, the 4.5-27x50i FFP mates superior materials and meticulous manufacturing processes and tolerances to produce a riflescope on par with the best out there today.

I went from GPO to Hawke. Glad to see my friends here and catch up. Again, assuming you already have seen our SHOT Show News page then you're aware of their new Frontier LRF 8x42 & 10x42 Rangefinder Binoculars & Vantage IR 1-4x20 - Turkey Dot Riflescope

Hawke has been quite busy and we are excited to be an active Hawke dealer.
Here is a list of everything coming in 2023

Vantage 10x50 Green Fully Multi-Coated
Vantage 12x50 Green Fully Multi-Coated

I was very impressed with their Vantage IR 1-4x20 - Turkey Dot - Red / Green Illuminated reticle with 5 brightness settings, over 4" of ER and a true 1 power. Both eyes open perfect 1x. For $219.99 grab this for your short range scope or for kids as the eye relief is amazing.

Their Vantage 1-8x24 WA's are also true 1x scopes also Red/Green and at $399.99 certainly worth checking out.

I was excited to see the new Frontier LRF 8x42 & 10x42 Rangefinder Binoculars Optics looked nice at the edges, no blue cast to the vision (Can't really do an optics evaluation inside a convention center) and 6 controllable brightness settings on the LED readout. Its range finding capabilities include: Distance, Rain, Hunt, Near, Horizontal Distance and Angle modes. The display brightness can be manually adjusted between 6 levels of brightness. The LRF requires a 3V CR2 battery and will automatically turn off after 15 seconds of no operation to save power.

I was contacted a few weeks ago by a rep I once worked with over at Steiner. He is now with Pard Nightvision. Out of a combination of curiosity of what he's been up to the last few years and what Pard was all about I made an appointment to meet up with him. After catching up he started showing me why I wanted to carry Pard as spec wise it is impressive, however, I stopped him after the response to my question "Is Pard a USA company". It is a Chinese company. We understand that many of the brands we carry source product from China. That's fine as it's a world market place, however, the profits from those companies stay here in the USA. Pard is a Chinese company so all $$$$ stay in China. I'm sure it's a great product from what he was saying, however, we prefer not to support a Chinese owned brand.

Coincidentally, my next meeting was with Steiner. As you know they recently released their T6Xi Riflescopes which very quickly have become quite popular and well received.

Steiner T6Xi Riflescopes
Steiner, a leader in high-performance optics for military and law enforcement as well as the professional marksman, announces an all-new series of riflescopes covering the full spectrum of tactical shooting needs. From CQB engagement, overwatch, or long-distance target operations, the Steiner riflescope T6Xi series combines advanced German engineering with made-in-America precision manufacturing to deliver premium, rugged optics that are ready to fulfill any mission, anywhere.

T6Xi 5-30x56 for long-range and precision shooting

T6Xi 3-18x56 and T6Xi 2.5-15x50 for near- to extended-range performance

T6Xi 1-6x24 for close-quarter to mid-range engagements

The T6Xi series builds on Steiner's legendary T5Xi optics developed for advanced tactical and competitive shooting, and incorporates the latest in Steiner glass and lens coating technology for brighter and clearer views in all light and field conditions. Upgraded locking windage and elevation turrets ensure maximum confidence while in the field.

Continuing along the theme of high end optics I went off to my meeting with Nightforce. We chatted a bit and caught up. No new product at this point, however, back ordered product is fewer, turn around times are shorter throughout the line and production delays have shortened. All great news as far as I'm concerned.

Staying with top end optics my next stop was a meeting with Tangent Theta. Talk about professionals. The crew are Tangent are just all such nice, knowledgeable and friendly folks it's just a pleasure to meet with them. I was shown the new 7-35x56....
An inch shorter than their TT525P
Similar weight
Same windage and elevation as the TT525P
36mm main tube
Parallax 10m - infinity
First run will be black only
Initial reticle offering is the Gen 3XR Fine, with more to follow. If you want the Rolls Royce of scopes you just found what you're looking for.

I also checked out their SAI Optics™ model SAI 6™ - The SAI™ 6 series of optical sights provide a rugged and versatile solution for a variety of sighting requirements in variable magnification. With an LED-illuminated First Focal Plane reticle, ranging and ballistic hold-off is accurately achieved at any magnification. The proprietary Rapid Aiming Feature™ reticle and superior field of view enhance close-quarter effectiveness. The ruggedized tubular design allows for a variety of modular mounting solutions.

The SAI™ 6 series is designed to accommodate advanced optical sighting system enhancements such as flip covers, Anti-Reflection Devices, laser filters, and polarizers. SAI™6 series sights are designed for brilliant optical performance in rugged environments.

We have been a Bushnell dealer for decades. As they go through different hierarchy changes they treat us either as a Camera dealer, in which case we are not permitted to order Tactical product, and sometimes we are treated, as we should be, as a Sport Optics retailer, and we have provided you with some amazing opportunities on their Tactical scopes. In 2019 & 2020 we did big business with Bushnell and then new folks came in and we were reverted to Camera dealer status and no longer able to purchase their Tactical scopes (a shame as we went through over 3,000 of their scopes the prior year). We had, what I thought was a good meeting last year at SHOT but nothing came of it. We met again today. I think the meeting went well and hopefully we will soon be back handling their premium riflescopes. Stay tuned and we will let you know when we know.

A short walk brought me over to Leupold. I look forward to my meeting with Leupold as my rep is a great guy and the Nat'l is as well. Leupold has been an industry main stay for decades and usually introduces something very worth sharing here at SHOT.
They showed me their new BX-4 Range HD TBR/W 10x42 Rangefinder Binocular - Should be available in 6-8 weeks. Optics look great (again based on being inside a convention center). The BX-4 Range HD TBR®/W 10x42mm fuses Leupold's DNA® engine and ballistics software with the optical performance diehard hunters and shooters demand. Now you can spot and range targets without wasting valuable seconds switching between gear. Its high-contrast red OLED display delivers visible readouts in any light, and its edge-to-edge clarity makes glassing sessions easy on the eyes. The next time you’re packing for a match or hunt, cut the excess. Take the BX-4 Range HD TBR/W.

Next I was shown their new Mark 5 HD 2-10x30 Riflescope. - "Pick up a Mark 5HD™ and you’ll feel the difference; it’s up to 20 ounces lighter than other scopes in its class. Get behind one and you’ll see the difference, from the superior edge to-edge clarity and extreme low-light performance to the versatility of the PR2™ reticle. With three revolutions of elevation adjustment, the Mark 5HD was built to max out the performance of the latest long range rifles and ammunition. It’s ergonomically designed with more tactile, audible click adjustments, larger numbers, and a high-speed throw lever, so you can put accurate rounds downrange faster. And like all Leupold riflescopes, it’s designed, machined, and assembled in the USA and guaranteed for life."
No fisheye effect, no distortion, PA, so compact. Great scope for sure IMO. Looks like the successful Mark 5 HD line of scopes has given birth to a great addition....
Mark 5HD 2-10x30 (35mm) M5C3 FFP TMR
Mark 5HD 2-10x30 (35mm) M5C3 FFP Illum. TMR
Mark 5HD 2-10x30 (35mm) M1C3 FFP PR-1MOA

There are more reticle options coming mid-year for this scope. These new three SKUs now are just the first round. Very exciting.

My last stop of the day is with another long standing industry brand, Zeiss. A few months back we got a new sales rep and I was looking forward to meeting him. He's been attentive to our account, great on the phone and e-mails but it's always nice to put a face with the assistance. Turns out, great guy.
Checked out their new SFL 30 Ultra-Compact Binoculars - the newest, lightest, and most compact binoculars to the ZEISS SF family. The ZEISS SFL (SmartFocus and Lightweight) is certainly impressive. Then I checked out the New Generation of V8 Riflescopes - They feature a 30/34mm main tube, exceptional optical performance, an extra-large eye box, and a daylight visible illuminated dot reticle.

Zeiss is doing everything right and I think these new products are excellent additions to their line up of superior products.

Remember all week we are running a SHOT Show Week Sale so if it's not marked down already call, 516-217-1000, and we will hook you up.

If there is anything you're looking for please give us a call at 516-217-1000. It is always our pleasure to speak with you. Always give a call to discuss options and what would be best for your needs.

I switched it up a bit today and went to Sloan's Homemade Ice Cream and got a waffle cone of Dark Chocolate Chunk and Coffee ice cream. Damn that hit the spot.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. More tomorrow, Day 3. Have a great day & please follow us on Instagram at gr8fuldoug_ :)

Does Bartlein, Kreiger, and Proof carry as much weight in the AR world as they do in precision rifle bolt-action guns?

Reading some bolt-action blogs and watching youtube reviews, Kreiger, Bartlein, and Proof Research are pretty big names in the precision rifle bolt-action world, along with Hawk Hill and Benchmark. Do these three names carry the same weight in the AR world, especially with regard to precision and long-range shooting? They are all priced around $600 or more so I can assume you are paying for quality, or are you partially just paying for the name? With match-grade ammo or ammo you reload yourself, do these three giants run with the very best barrels you can possibly get for the AR-15 platform, for precision and accuracy-focused builds?

I'm putting aside WOA, Shilen, Criterion, Lilja, JP, etc. because my question is rather focused on whether these 3 specific giants have made as successful a transition from precision rifle (bolt-action) shooting over into the AR space, especially the AR-15. There is not that much content on Youtube that focuses on these three names in the AR-15 world.

Accessories FLIPS MERCH GET YOUR FLIPS MERCH

Alright guys I was tossing around the idea of doing some snow monster and flips merch. Talked with the guys that made the image and they are cool with it. They requested that their cut of the proceeds be donated a charity of choice by @lowlight

Being that this whole debacle started by an attempt to scalp this community, I will follow suit with them and donate all of the proceeds to the chosen charity.

I’m wanting to do a run of patches and stickers

Procurement cost for the patches are roughly as follows
50- $5/ea
100 $4/ea
200-$3/ea
300-$2.25ea
500-$1.50
5000- $.68

Stickers
300-$.50
500- $.31
5000- $.15

Going to need to look into what the cheapest option for shipping will be

Pricing wise I’m thinking
Patches $8/ea plus shipping
Stickers do a 10 for $5

Hopefully get get enough bought to justify the 5000 count roll and I can increase the amount each person gets

Looking to get a headcount and preorder before these get bought so I can buy the most price efficient amount.

ETA on goods would be roughly a month after order

fellow Filipian @MarinePMI has deemed the cause worthy and is donating 100 challenge coins to the cause, price for the coins will be $5 each plus shipping costs. First come first serve.

If you buy coins/stickers/patches all will ship together so it will only be one shipping cost.

What seating depth is actually doing...actual node or just pass/fail?

Not sure where to begin...but jump testing is something we all see a lot, and it typically the discussion goes back to bullet timing/barrel vibrations/etc...along those lines.

one thing that has always hung in my mind is "forgiving" bullets...how are bullets "forgiving" if the whole idea of load dev, is based upon timing up when the bullet exits the muzzle with some movement/vibration pattern...do forgiving bullets not make the barrel move/vibrate? (obviously not the case) do forgiving bullets not deflect the same when exiting a moving barrel? self correct? i dont have an answer, just questions...

is it possible that instead of barrel timing/muzzle exit, all seating depth needs to be is "good enough to hand off the bullet straight"? ie; Bullet A, gets a clean/straight hand off due to bullet shape and chamber spec relationship from .005" to .150" off...basically it gets a good hand off anywhere having the bearing surface out of the neck because that "forgiving" design allows it so...while maybe Bullet B, has less agreeable relationship with chamber design, and it doesnt get a clean/straight hand off from .005" to .020" off...gets straight from .025 to .050"...then its iffy again past that...again, just illustrative examples

all of this also assumes the reloading practices and chambers have the correct relationships...bad reloading practices or bad chamber specs/chamber jobs is another thing...basically sound reloading practices (consistent doesnt always equal sound...if youre making burs in brass, deforming bullets in seating, etc...even if you do it every time...its not good for results)

im sure anyone who has done much reloading/shooting knows certain bullets just shoot in a lot of barrels...its almost hard to get them not to...SMKs, Berger BT Target (better than hybrids in my experience)...Hybrids and Hornady ELDs are way better than most also

For actual shooting scenarios where this has shown up for me...i had a 223 barrel a while back...shooting 80 VLDs. I did powder tests, i did the Berger jump tests (the off the lands version i think from .020 to .120 or whatever it was)...and everything was basically 3/4" @ 100...some groups around 1/2", some closer to 1", but everything in a decent sample size...3/4", which is not a pretty looking group shooting small .224 bullets

Buddy of mine said "try them .005" off"...so i did, groups instantly cut in approx. 1/2...went to shooting a lot of ragged holes groups on the regular in the 1/4-5/8" range...and it did this for a pretty long time, until the lands wore away...it basically became a 3/4moa system again over time

at the same time...ive had A LOT of barrels over the years...easily north of 20 since 2015...where i shot forgiving bullets...SMKs, Berger BT target/juggernauts/hybrids...and in those barrels, i cant find a REAL seating depth difference...i can seat a Berger BT Target (what i use most the last few years), anywhere from .020 to .100 off, and every barrel will shoot them basically the same for relevant sample sizes...i cant shoot the difference day to day, but i know everyone on the internet shoots better so maybe they can lol

so my question goes back to...if jump (and powder charge) have to do with barrel timing/vibrations/muzzle movement...why do certain bullet designs seem to ignore this? barrel has still got to be moving

is it possible that the amount of jump is just a pass/fail scenario? in that it gets handed off clean/straight or it doesnt in relation to how the case/bullet reacts with the chamber geometry

of course, it could also be possible that shooting from a bipod/rear bag...the barrel vibration/movement variation is so small, i cant reliably/consistently see it in the results...and bullets being handed off crooked is all i can shoot accurately enough to see on target...maybe?

and yes...ive seen peoples small sample testing that show "clear winners"...i have stacks of my own also. I also have stacks of load dev where i shot "forgiving" bullets across 2-5 grain charge windows and .100" jump windows that didnt move significantly at all...possible can barrels be oscillating within a similar window at all times, and the variation seen on target is just how straight the bullet was handed off and leaves the bore?

ive also seen the barrel time info/papers/data....but i still hang up when that doesnt apply or show up on target...

curious to hear some other thoughts and experiences...lots of nuance and noise to weed out in these topics so hopefully i got my thoughts across clearly

id also like skip over any "i shot 5 rounds of A and 5 rounds of B, and A was .1" smaller so A will always be better..." ...we all know how that would hold up lol

Side Note: outside of the "unforgiving" VLD design in that 223 that showed a clear difference...i dont see the large shifts/changes a lot of people seem to see from small jump variations, or powder for that matter...its not like .020 is 1/3moa for 10 shots, and .030 is 1.25moa for 10 shots...if i do see large variations, when retested, they dont hold up, typically attributed to an outlier or i shanked one...my variations are always very small, with lots of overlap, and larger samples blend the differences together...simply put, my barrels/rifles dont consistently (aka the vast majority of the time) shoot better than 1/2" or worse than 3/4" for large sample sizes...no matter what i change in my loads with the "forgiving" bullets (within reason, using good components and known reliable combos)...yes yes, ive shot a ton of ragged hole groups like everyone else, but theyre small outliers, not the overall average everyday

New Zealand PM Resigns

She infers she is resigning from burnout - I think more likely she is being promoted within the WEF.

1 Moa at 100 1 moa at 1000

Who actually believes this. ?

Reference

Biggest SHOT surprise so far.

New Stag bolt gun. 60° prototype aiming for Tactical hunter crowd. They told me these prototypes are aluminum actions but they are working with magnesium also. Price point to be between $1500-$2000 MSRP. Shooting for summer launch with complete rifles first then components later. I liked this action better than the new Aero offering. Chassis felt very good and very similar to a Bravo.
