Belgian Couple Who Hosted Refugees Left With 36k Euros in Damages

Sign on a window saying Refugees Welcome

A Belgian couple who offered to provide their home to refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine says they were left with €36,000 ($39k) in damages caused by the Ukrainian family they took in.
Sven De Strijcker and Evy De Koninck offered their former home in the city of Ninove to house Ukrainian refugees to the local public social service centre (CPAS) after the pair had moved to another house in the municipality of Haaltert.
“One day we received a call from the CPAS in Ninove asking if we could pick up a Ukrainian woman with two children (her husband had been killed in the war),” the couple said, newspaper 7sur7 reports.
“Then we got another call asking if we had a problem with the fact that the woman was pregnant. When we arrived, a pregnant woman with three children and her husband were waiting for us,” they added.
“We quickly noticed that this was no ordinary Ukrainian family. Two weeks later, the CPAS told us that they were Roma gipsies. For example, the members of this family did not know how to use a washing machine, a dryer, or an oven… All these devices were unknown to them. The mother washed the clothes in our bathtub,” they said.
French Hotel Commandeered to House Asylum Seekers Now Unusable Due to Damage https://t.co/GFerCz6NBn

According to the pair, just weeks after the family arrived, “Mould appeared all over the windows, the walls were covered with inscriptions, wood was torn from the bed frame, doors and cabinets were damaged. But that’s not all: all the chairs in the kitchen were broken, the moulding was torn off the stairs, there were holes in the floor, our children’s toys were broken, and even their piggy bank was opened.”
The couple also claims the Ukrainian refugees hosted another family in the home. “Another woman, her husband and three children were staying with us. They were subletting. At one point, more than 11 people were in the house,” they said.
“They were also constantly asking us for money. Once it was supposedly for their youngest daughter’s birthday present, but it turned out to be for a car, even though we knew the man didn’t have a driver’s license. When they broke our son’s birth gift, that was the last straw,” they said.
The refugees eventually moved out in December but the couple were left with 36,000 euros of damages and the CPAS refused to pay the couple, telling them to sue the refugees in court for the damages.
The story, while remarkable, is by no means unique in Europe in recent years. In 2020, a French hotel in Forbach that was used to house asylum seekers became so damaged by them that it could no longer be used as a hotel.
André Heintz, head of the Heintz Real Estate and Hotels Group that owned the hotel, claimed the damages were so extensive the costs were estimated at 1.7 million euros.

HILARIOUS!!!

New 5th Circuit Ruling

Here is an excerpt from the 5th Circuit in WV vs Dept of Treasury. They ruled that Non-Legislative Agencies cannot make law.

NCLA’s brief further argued that Treasury lacked the power to “rule by regulation” when it later promulgated a rule seeking to clarify and thereby save the scheme.

"An agency cannot exercise legislative power independently of Congress, which alone has the power to tax and spend—not the Executive Branch."

So, the court agreed with NCLA that Treasury is not permitted to clarify the Tax Cut Ban’s ambiguous text through regulation. Finally, the panel highlighted that the novelty and grand scope of the Tax Cut Ban “make it even more important that Congress speak with a clear voice,” and said that Congress cannot craft a deal with only *some* of the strings attached. NCLA commends the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit for safeguarding states’ sovereign taxing authority.

Can't find any good wood stocked rifles anymore

All my guns are aluminum, fiberglass or plastic. I need a beautiful wood hunting rifle, budget up to $5k without scope. My LGS has some Weatherbys on the rack, but I have plenty of middle-of-the-road calibers in bolt and AR formats from .223 up to 280AI. Honestly, the weatherbys didn't feel any better than the Browning Xbolt they had in wood. In fact the browning xbolt with the aluminum action felt great, almost too great.

I don't have a bolt action 30 I don't own a .243 so guess I need to change that (.243 or 300 win mag). Opposite ends of the spectrum I know, but I'll eventually get both. I looked into buying a blank and having it carved and going full custom, but I don't think I'm ready for that process, and the hand carving + wood + barrel + action + trigger etc will exceed my budget probably.

I've looked at all the big American manufacturers and I like the Winchester 70 Super Grade French Walnut over any Weatherby offerings.

You can find Cooper's online, but not from them directly as they transition to Nighthawk ownership. This brings me then over to the European manufacturers. The top end of my budget is the bottom end of Blaser pricing, so I'm out for that. I think I can get a good-looking Merkel Helix, Sako or JP Sauer & Sohn for $5k but finding them online where I can add to cart and buy has been a bit more difficult than I anticipated, especially Merkel. Plus the straight pull bolt would be a new thing for my collection.

If you were to buy a wood stocked gun these days, with an emphasis on beautiful wood, classic lines, what maker would you go for? Are there smaller gun makers I may have overlooked?

Doug from Camera Land's Day 4 SHOT Show Report

I started my day with Sightron. As I've already shared with you they just released 2 new series of scopes. Sightron S6 1-6x24, S6 1-6x24 FFP - LRT
S6 1-6x24 SFP - IR4A
- These should be available around the end of February.
The new 5-30x56's should be in around the end of March.
Both of these scopes are made in Japan.

Sightron’s engineers gave thoughtful consideration in designing a LPVO (low power variable optic) to meet the demanding needs of 3-gun competitors, tactical operators and close-range hunters. First, using the finest Japanese glass combined with Sightron’s exclusive MC-777 lens multi-coating, gives the shooter amazing clarity, contrast, and excellent light transmission all while reducing flare. This and combined with Sightron’s Precision Focus Eyepiece which provides comfortable eye-relief and a generous sight picture gives the shooter an uninterrupted sight of the target under varying lighting conditions. In those challenging lighting situations, another aid to help the shooter acquire their target is the 11-position illumination dial with off positions between each setting allowing the shooter to quickly set their desired intensity. The aircraft grade aluminum 34mm tube houses Sightron’s exclusive ExacTrack W&E system for consistent, repetitive tracking, and is O-ring sealed, nitrogen charged and 1,000G rated shockproof so that your scope provides reliable performance these shooters demand.

I stopped back over at Element for just a quick visit which turned into more than an hour, but a very worthwhile time for sure. We discussed some of their future hunting scope plans and these guys are ON THE BALL. Keep your eye on Element for what should be great things to continue coming.

I went from here to iRay / Infiray As you should know we started representing them towards the end of 2023. Great to actually meet the guys I've been communicating with. After seeing all they've got I am excited to be a part of this Thermal company's representation.
I checked out their new:

RICO PRO 640 Variable 25/50mm Thermal Weapon Sight

InfiRay Outdoor’s patented dual FOV objective lens allows users to seamlessly switch between awide FOV for detection and a narrow FOV for target identification. Unmatched image quality paired withan intuitive and easy-to-use interface, HD display, 6-hour run-time, aluminum alloy housing, and 32GB ofinternal memory, gives you all the tools you need to take your hunt to the next level.

In addition to the features found on the original TL35, the TL35 V2 adds several highly requested features including an AMOLED display, audio recording, and laser rangefinder connectivity via Bluetooth. The T-6061 aluminum housing allows mounting with standard 30 mm rings like a traditional day scope. A 50hz 12 μm detector, HD display, and manual focus lens all team up to create an image that’s anything but traditional. The TL35 V2 features a dual battery design for 10+ hours of run time and 32GB of internal memory to keep your optic going all night. The BOLT Series was designed from the ground up for optimal use on bolt action rifles and other platforms that demand flexible mounting options with increased eye relief. The traditional style of a BOLT housing allows for mounting with standard 30mm rings like a typical day scope.

I'm sure Jeff will have these great new units on our website for you very shortly.

Next, and last stop of SHOT Show 2023, was a lookie see over at Arken. I've been reading about them for a while but never saw any of their products. I took a look and chatted with a great team member there. More needs to be discussed but stay tuned as this may be a new addition for us.

Remember we are running our SHOT Show Week Sale through this Sunday at Midnight so if it's not marked down already call, 516-217-1000, and we will hook you up.

Firearms Used Staccato P Duo Package

Selling my used Staccato P Duo, and all that I bought for it as a package. Round count is around 1000, and has lived in the safe for about 10 months.

Looking to get $2500 for the package as a whole, but will entertain serious offers. However I am not presently looking for trades. Have too much stuff as is.

In this I am including the following along with the Staccato P Duo.

Factory bag with plates and other OEM stuff

Sure fire X300U flashlight

11 in total Staccato 20 round magazines

Safariland Level 3 duty holster (set for optics)

QVO black IWB holster

New 16lb spring for 9 major/38 super major power factor. In case someone wants to run hot rod loadings through it. Never have myself but I did notice some +p and +p+ cycled too fast with the 15lb spring.

I will include the Leupold DPP that is on it if requested however, somehow the glass got chipped on the inside corner which caused a small crack. I’ve been meaning to send the DPP back to Leupold but life has been too busy. If you want the optic to do this yourself, it’s included at the 2500 price.

I will be posting more in depth photographs later this week but I am packing for a quick business trip presently. I’ll also make sure to post the photos of the holsters. The QVO has never been used, the safariland has but is in good condition.

If you have any questions or concerns feel free to send me a message. I do live in the Las Vegas area as well and would consider in person/at FFL if schedules fit.

Cons of putting a suppressor on a bolt action precision rifle?

Hi All,
I have a sweet shooting (0.24 moa) bolt action build, chambered in 6.5 creedmoor. I also have a AI AXMC in 338 lapua (0.25 moa).

I am contemplating putting thunderbeast suppressors on both of these guns. One gun I use for PRS and other for ELR matches.

I am looking for feedback on cons of using a suppressor on a precision rifle. Does it impact accuracy, recoil or any other related aspect?

Looking for comments from folks who have had the experience and specifically of using it in matches.

thanks for your inputs.

Best
Harjeet

Trumpy just scored points with me.

Regardless of his motive (Does he really care or just getting the senior vote?) I agree on this. My SS and Medicare are not 'gifts' from the gub'mint. We talk about the "The spark" well this could be it. You take a large part of my retirement and I go on the stReet, I've got nothing to lose and I'm coming after YOU, PERSONALLY, and not with extreme prejudice, but with MAXIMUM prejudice.
