Gunsmithing Wood taps...

Putting a "sorta" period correct rifle together for a gent. The stock work was something he handled the bulk of. We just got the metal back from parkerizing and while putting it together Kalyb noticed that the wood around the rear swivel was starting to lift along the grain due to the thread fit.
Chasing the hole with a drill would of resulted in disaster because of how a drill removes material. It surely would have exploded the stock around the hole. What we needed was a tap, but finding a "wood tap" isn't exactly something your going to source from the local hardware store.
So, we make one...
Grab a stick of 4340 and thread it on a .100" pitch. Start your tool +.200" in front of the part, so you have room to bump the work offset by -.01" in Z after each thread cycle. Doing so maintains the start position of the thread but changes the engagement point of the tool with the material. As a result, you match the pitch of the screw and avoid changing the insert to some weirdo acme/buttress-looking thing that costs $150+ for a box of inserts that you'll use maybe once every ten years.
Finish it by loading in the 4th axis and wizz an endmill down its length just above the centerline, so the leading edge cuts material instead of merely pushing it like the screw on the swivel was trying to do.
Bueno! I wicked a little thin CA into the hole to repair where the fibers were trying to lift and now were all set. Finish with a few swipes of 320grit to knock the edges back down.

223 Bolt Gun w/ 88 ELD-M Help

Looking for some feedback on issues with my first load, and to see if anyone else is running this bullet in mag fed bolt gun.

Gun:
- ARC Nucleus Gen 1
- 24" barrel, 223 (not AI), throated for 88s (second hand, so I'm not sure of the freebore), Sig 762TI-QD suppressor.
- MDT 223 polymer mag

Load:
- Virgin Lapua 223 brass, chamfer/deburred
- Fed GM 205M primers
- 88 ELD-M
- 1.943 CBTO (barely fits in the mag)
- H4895 (23.5, 23.7, 23.9, 24.1, 24.3), all were a little crunchy when seating

Took it out this morning (53 degrees) to see what the speeds looked like. Got 2804, 2843, 2858, 2867, 2874. 6-7 SD, 15-18 ES.

I'm good with the speed, and the accuracy was good enough for what I was trying to accomplish with the Magnetospeed hanging off. Just concerned with primers after firing. I've loaded for a little while, but this is my first foray into something that's not found in a Hornady or Hodgdon manual. Hence the ask for some feedback. Pictures here - Lapua on the left and some Winchester bulk 62g on the right that I sent downrange for comparison.

Safe to say it's a hot round and back off?

Anyone with a recipe to share with a similar setup?

Appreciate the help.

LaRue 7.62: Used LaRue tOBR in 7.62 with 18” and 20" barrels and 14.5” handguard. I have two LaRue large frames and decided to keep the .260R and sell the 7.62 as I don’t shoot that caliber any longer. This was consistently under an MOA and .75 MOA rifle with the 20” barrel once I settled in and did my part. Prefer to sell locally in VA but will ship to the lower 48 (where allowed). Asking $3500 $3350 for this package.
• Billet upper and lower
• QD level system on the handguard
• Quick change barrel
• Used with black furniture, but in excellent condition
• Shot about 500 rounds using factory 7.62 / 308 in the 20" barrel
• Small mark on the lower right above “tactical,” could be fixed with a marker, but you can see it in the picture
• Chromed LaRue BCG
• LaRue MBT Trigger
• Never fired 18” “Field Grade” barrel with the PST adjustable gas block and a Surefire brake (no rocksett so you can replace if desired).. These were made by LaRue as he was getting his barrel shop on-line and before he transitioned to the “Reardon Steel” barrels
• Used (original) 20” Reardon Steel barrel with PST and LaRue TQ brake
• Both barrels are 1/10 twist with 5/8x24 threads
• Three 3” rail sections
• Barrel wrench
• LaRue 7.62 Magazine
• Original Target if I can locate it
Plenty of additional info on LaRue’s site about the rifle here.

Suppressors Do all can. Adapter school please. 🤣

So I decided to make the dive.
Criteria:
Hunting rifle (7 SAUM, 6.5 Creed, .243) so 30 cal can
Also be able to toss on my .224 Valkyrie AR for coyotes. The .224 being 1/2×28 thread and all others being 5/8×24. This won't be used for mag dumps. It won't be used for rapid fire. Pretty much solely a hunting suppressor.

All barrels are 24" so length I'd like to keep 7" or less and want to keep the weight down to a minimum.

The more I read the more confusing it gets especially with the mounting systems. (For me being a rookie with suppressors)

How does the process work? I went and did the Silencer shop kiosk registration and downloaded the app for my picture. I chose the NFA single shot trust when I registered but do I pay for that at the same as when I purchase the suppressor? Do I do the efile form 4 first? Is that done at the dealer or through say silencershop if that's where I purchase? If I purchase somewhere else is there a fee to transfer to an FFL?

I had kinda narrowed them down to a Tbac Ultra 7 and a Dead air Nomad ti.

All the help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Europeans- what's up with this?

I'm in Munich right now and I've spent the last week and change in London and Athens. I've been sporting flannel and a Coleman's Creek hat most of the trip. I suspect that might be part of the reason why I've been asked half a dozen times whether or not I voted for Trump. When I confirm the reaction is never positive. I've never asked any foreigners in the US who they voted for in their home country, as frankly, I don't give a shit. It seems like everyone wants to talk about American politics. Waiters, shop owners, cabbies etc.

Today I took a tour of a castle and on the way the tour guide was talking about the suspicious death of Ludwig II. The tour guide asked the group if anyone could guess who his heir was and I blurted out "the Clintons." It went over like a fart in church. I get that socialism is en vogue here, but lighten up a little.

Rifle Scopes Trijicon Tenmile dang

I decided to try two scopes on my new long range rifle.
Trijicon tenmile 4.5-30 MOA FFP
Nightforce NX8 2.5-20 MOA SFP

NF was great and took the rifle way beyond ranges I imagined to 1400 yds.

Just for trying I swapped to the Tenmile for magnification and the FFP. After a hard time zeroing and finally getting what I thought a zero at 200yds with some cheap and nice ammo. 300yds plus was almost impossible. All bolts were double checked for torque on scope rings and Seekins mount.

I was getting very frustrated and swapped back to the NF scope.

The NF zero was still great. Shot only the cheap ammo and damn. I shot 200 to check zero, hit my 300 propane tank and knocked it over then continued knocking over the 400 and 500 yds propane tanks.
600yds was on paper and 700yds hit the bullseye almost center.

Not saying the Tenmile scopes are all bad but this one was definitely defective. The FFP and 30x was nice but not if the zero goes all over the place.

So I want to try a chassis

I want to build a short lightweight rifle for when hunting with my boys. Western PA and WV mountains. Most shots 300yds or less. Mostly tree stand or box blind hunting.

Whitetail
Coyote
Woodchucks
Coons
Fox

6.5x47 Lapua and 6.5CM probably. I’m already set up to load for both. Have multiple rifles chambered in both.

I’ve always used Manners and McMillan stocks. But with my kids being young and growing, the adjustability of the chassis have tweaked my interest. LOP and eye relief being a priority. No bedding / inlet work needed will reduce cost. And lack of bottom metal / bedding dam nears gets some of the chassis I’m looking at to the same weight or less than my carbon fiber EH4 Manners stocks.

I’m looking at the MPA BA Ultralite chassis. Defiance Anti action. Proof CF 20in barrel. Triggertech trigger. Threaded for my TBAC suppressors.

Anybody here have experience hunting with a chassis rifle? Experience with kids shooting a chassis rifle?

Accessories MPA Chassis 700 SA

Have a Masterpiece Arms BA competition chassis with front weight kit and magazine guard bipod does not go with it.

$850

SOLD Bergara B14r Complete Setup

Selling my B14r, because it's responsible for me getting all the way in the money pit that is long-range precision. Seriously, I've owned this for less than a year, and it's taught me more about shooting and piqued my interest in the sport more than any other item in my safe. I love this rifle but I now have to downsize to support the habit here (i.e., I just bought a Vudoo).

It's been well cared for, lives in a safe in dry Colorado, and I'd estimate has about 1,000 rounds through it--all SK RM/LRM, some Eley, some Aguilla Target Competition. It really likes the SK Rifle Match/red box, and even with this nut behind the bolt, with that ammo it makes ragged holes at 50 all day long, and sub-MOA at 100, and I don't even know what I'm doing.

Bergara B14r 22lr
  • 18" carbon-wrapped threaded barrel
  • Stock HMR (Rem700 pattern) chassis with all LOP spacers
  • Seekins 30 MOA rail
  • Harris Bipod with the larger lever for locking down the tilt
  • Two mags, one with the A&J Sporting 2-round extension (so, one 10- and one 12-round mag)
  • Area 419 bolt knob; will include the stock Bergara one too
Price: $850 shipped to your FFL who gladly accepts items from non-FFLs.
Payable via PayPal FF (no notes, please) or Venmo

NOTE:
I also have a Vortex Diamondback Tactical (6-24x50, EBR 2-C Mil) that I used initially with this rifle, I could include that for another $250. I do not have any extra 30mm rings here, but for just over a grand, you would have a complete precision rimfire setup, just add rings (Vortex precision rings can be had on Amazon for $70).

I no longer have the original box for the rifle because I am an idiot, but TBH I never thought I'd sell this, I love it so much. I just have no room for it in the safe and my wallet seems to have eaten all my money. Fear not, it will be packed very well.

Can't lie, always thought it would be cool to have a couple of them whirly-gigs up above. A little more impressive than a fuzz buster on the dashboard.

Pretty sure babes would dig it. 🤠

Not sure about the popo, and sure, it's a little coin, but yolo 🤓

Could turn the Sentra into a Babe Magnet 🕺

What's the consensus?
