R.I.P. Bill Calfee


He passed away 8/11/2024

I came across his articles in Precision Shooting magazine in the 90's. He introduced rimfire barrel tuners there in 1994.
@tonykharper has posted a series of reminiscence threads on forum.accurateshooter.com, hopefully he will cross post them here or I will link them with his say so.

Know there is some bad blood between these forums, and tuners are a controversial topic for many. But there is no denying the impact Bill Calfee and tuners had on the Rimfire Benchrest world.

PLASTIC RELOADING TRAYS WITH DRAIN HOLES

I absolutely love these things.

They’re really just cheap plastic cartridge trays for pistol rounds, and they come in two sizes.

You can buy them in bulk online, or save them from being discarded with the ammunition boxes they came with.

1. They’re plastic
2. They’re light
3. They’re waterproof
4. There are holes at the bottom
5. They’re perfect for .380 ACP, 9mm, .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, .45 ACP, .223 Remington, .308 Winchester.
6. .40 S&W and 10mm Auto tend to get stuck in the holes once in a while, because of near - identical diameters, but no biggie.

I get to use them for:

1. Drying brass subjected to wet cleaning - ultrasonic or stainless pin tumbling
2. Cleaning entire cases or PRIMER POCKETS ONLY in the ultrasonic cleaner should I choose to do so
3. So many other things

NOW…

I need something of this sort for .300 Winchester Magnum / .300 Norma Magnum /. 338 Lapua Magnum.

Talk about fat - bottomed girls! They won’t fit!

Emphasis on plastic, and holes at the bottom.

I couldn’t find any such thing online!

Hornady or RCBS micrometer bullet seating tool?

Does anyone have experience with either of these die sets (Hornady or RCBS), utilizing the micrometer bullet seating tool? I bought the Hornady set, though after opening it, I'm a little surprised that it doesn't look all that extravagant for the price. The RCBS feels like it has a bit better construction to it. I am considering returning it for the RCBS, but I initially hesitated on more RCBS products after we broke a couple RCBS dies for the .338 Lapua recently.

The Hornady ends up requiring the purchase of their full length die set (I think you can get either the Custom Grade or Match Grade), and then unscrewing the top of the bullet seating tool - and screwing on the new micrometer end. Either way, they seem to be about the same price in the end.

I just wondered if anyone has any impressions of each they could share.

SOLD XM3 Full Clone Build Kit

I spent a couple of years collecting parts for an XM3 build, but I've shifted priorities to other projects. I have everything, and even some duplicate parts. The receiver serial number is exactly in the range of the originals, and it was barreled by Hart - they profiled and chambered the barrel also, to XM3 specs. The receiver needs to be clip-slotted, the bolt knob installed, and the trigger tuned. I'll take $4,500 firm, shipped and insured, for everything in the list below. No trades. Not willing to break up the kit unless it doesn't sell whole. I have the recipe for the original Man-O-War finish for the buyer.

Also for sale is a Surefire FA762SS suppressor, BNIB and unfired, but not until the kit sells and then the buyer of the kit has first refusal: $5,500 firm. If the kit doesn't sell whole, I'll post separately.

Carbon Barrel cracked??

I have a Bartlein CF barrel chambered in 300 W.M.
Sent it to be put in a cryogenic chamber to relieve any existing stress in barrel, upon unboxing I found the carbon cracked completely through in 2 separate spots.
Also sent a Proof barrel chambered with same reamer to have the same process done and it looks the same as it did when I sent it off.
How big of an issue/problem is this and has anyone experienced the same before?

Multiple Signs Placed At Bus Stops Along Colfax Avenue In Denver

The transit authority is investigating

A bus operator first reported a sign at approximately 5 a.m. at a bus stop near the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Oneida Street. The metal sign was attached to the bus stop?s pole with rivets and appears to have been installed shortly before it was reported.

Cool Cheek Piece Knob For Us "Old-School" McMillan Users

I got to pick up my latest barrel from the gunsmith the other day. Other than that, I am in no way affiliated with him.

He showed me a pet project of his. It is a pretty simple cheek piece knob that contains a lever that is held in by a detent. You can pop the lever out, and get more torque on it to keep the cheek piece from loosening up over time. It works well enough that I can't get my cheek piece to fall with a moderate hammer fist. I think he said he's going to or already is making them for Terry's Loggerhead design too.

Also it is coated, and the knobs on my A4 saddle cheek piece and one A5 clamp bar started to try to rust on me.

It is nothing earth shattering, but it solves a simple gripe I've had about several of my McMs over the years and I'll be getting more...especially if he makes them for the saddle cheek piece because my OEM McMillans need tightening after every 20 rounds or so. I am not linking anything for fear of getting banned, but the guy's name is Matt Stewart of Stewart Rifles out of OK if you Google search.

Knowing what I know, and seeing plenty of the typical Military safety training videos this wasn't a painless way to go out.

Review of Roaming Shot Range (1000 yard facility) Slaughter, LA

I’ve attended many classes at Thunder Ranch, Shootrite, Rangemaster, Yavapai with Louis Awerbuck, Tactical Response, private classes with my sons, done stints in USPSA, High Power, and Three Gun – I've been on a lot of ranges. It occurred to me that pound for pound, hour for hour, my first trip to Roaming Shot was one of my best range trips ever.

I met an expert. Ben Fabre provides a facility and understanding designed to demonstrate the potential of the shooter and equipment. Roaming Shot Range in Slaughter, LA has a 1000 yard capability. I scheduled a morning with Ben because I have two rifles I enjoy and two rifles I’ve been fighting. I’m lucky to be a member of Palo Alto Rifle and Pistol Club, which has multiple ranges allowing for rifle shooting out to 600 yards. I hoped to see what I could do with a 20” Grendel beyond the 600 yard line and to see what a short barrel Grendel was capable of. I also have a freshly scoped custom 700 and AR-10, both in 308. I was struggling to get the 700 to group to the capability of the Krieger barrel and the AR-10 to work at all with a suppressor attached.

When you arrive at Roaming Shot, you walk up stairs to an air conditioned second story room with several windows you can shoot from. There are screens mounted next to you to show hits on the steel targets out to 1000 yards. A work bench has a plethora of tools behind the shooters and there is a drink/snack station to the side. We got started with the 20” Noveske barreled Grendel. Ben asked to shoot the gun to see what it was doing and put a few rounds down range to feel her out. After getting the velocity from a Garmin Xero and running a ballistic calculator, I got behind the glass and get direction to shoot the steel deer at 300, square metal at 400, bear at 540, pink bullseye at 700 – Ben is calling how many minutes to dial in, and I’m getting hits. At 800 I’m thrilled. I believed I had a legitimate 800+ yard gun but I hadn’t proved it – then I got three hits at 900. “Go to the buffalo at 1000. Give me another 5 minutes.” I turned the scope elevation up – and hit a wall. I only had another two minutes to give. Murphy laughs – I don’t have the scope in a base with any built in elevation. I’ve never had a better excuse to get a new mount. For the record, the barrel likes Hornady 123 Gr SST and does nothing but produce sub MOA groups.

The second rifle was also a 6.5 Grendel, but with a 12.5” Noveske barrel. Hornady has recently released a 100gr V-Match ELD-VT and the scuttlebutt on the interwebs is that it performs in general and out of short barrels specifically. This was my first outing of consequence with the 100 gr, so Ben zero’d the gun. His final group at 100 was less than half an inch – Hornady and Noveske are doing it right. Ben got back behind the spotting scope and walked me out. With an old US Optics SR6 1.5-6 scope, I got 3/3 hits at 600. For the record, that 100 gr bullet at the muzzle is making 2,450-2,475 FPS for about 1,350 ft/lbs of energy. Call me old fashioned, but I think the short 6.5 Grendels are the sweet spot for a light gun that can deliver enough power for deer and hogs at the distances most people actually shoot.

We moved on to the Remington 700. I’d told Ben about my concerns and the first thing he did was check the torque on every fastener and bolt on the gun. He used a digital in/lb driver. I was surprised to hear his call outs – “That isn’t even 13 in/lbs, this is only 25 ft lbs, that's over 60 in/lbs” etc – I laughed and give credit to Death Before Dismount who recently disparaged inexpensive analog manual adjustment in/lb drivers, which I had used. It may, as it turns out, be worth investing in a quality digital in/lb driver if you’re playing the precision rifle game. My second credit to Death Before Dismount is he donated a 50% off US Optics certificate to my cause which I used to purchase a FDN-17X. The scope is excellent thus far. Ben mentioned he’d prefer more positive clicks, but other than that he had nothing but praise. The glass is super clear and it seems to be a very well built scope. I’m out to wear out the barrel in an effort to learn the capability of the 18” 308 in conjunction with that scope.

One of the most important things I learned was that the parallax markings on scopes are, at best, a rough guide. In the past, I've just dialed to the distance marked. Ben explained the specific magnification being used, shooters eye and so forth meant it is to be determined by actually moving your head to see if the reticle “floats” and if you can’t move around a little without the reticle adjusting, the parallax isn’t right. I found this particularly interesting because I initially complained the US Optics specifically only has one marking for 100 yards; other than that, it is just a smaller to larger rheostat laser engraving. That turns out to be the right way to do it.

Ben went on to prove to me that the 700 was shooting, and that I hadn’t set my scope up properly for my eye. It needed to come back more than half an inch, but he adjusted the rings in moments and gave me a few pointers about how I was manipulating the rifle and magically I was stacking rounds. Ben shot a group that was less than an inch and a half at 300 yards. After a sub MOA group of my own, we moved on to my nemesis.

Years ago I built an AR-10. I thought I had the ideal parts and configuration. I spec’d everything and it was a laser beam unsuppressed and a jam-o-matic with a can up front. For years I toyed with mags, ammo, springs, adjustable gas blocks, buffers etc. Ultimately, I've switched to a Noveske 16” barrel with a switch block, KAK bolt with dual ejectors and a 9.5 oz KAK buffer – she runs like a top with a Sandman K up front. The gun is shooting less than an inch and flinging brass out 20 feet at three o’clock. I’m not sure if Roaming Shot brings good luck or I finally threw enough money and parts at a problem to find success, but that rifle ran 100% and demonstrated it may be possible for a suppressed AR-10 to run even if it isn’t a $5000+ factory rifle.

Going 4 for 4 makes for a great day – zero malfunctions and the arrows were flew straight and far. Turns out the Indian needed a little work and the set ups got some tweaking, but Ben had both under control. I can’t recommend the experience enough. His minor corrections – put that thumb over here, pay more attention to your level, try pulling the butt of the rifle more toward your center – all tightened me up.

If you’re anywhere near Slaughter, LA and you consider yourself an enthusiast with anything that resembles a capable rifle – you owe yourself a trip. After a couple hours, you’ll know what you and your equipment can actually do in tandem and if you have any areas that are correctable – either physically or mechanically – chances are Ben will fix it in real time. HOWA 1500 Barreled Action

I'm looking at picking up one of the HOWA 1500 Barreled Actions from Brownell's in 308. Rifle will be used for hunting deer and hogs. I can't decide on which barrel length to go with. It's between the 16.25" or 20". Will be running a Diligent Defense Enticer S on it and not shooting past 400 yards. Would appreciate of advice on these barreled actions and barrel length. Thanks.

First Timer Help! LR Hunting 308 Handloads

First time reloading and first time posting to a forum. Take it easy on me.

I've decided to handload some long range hunting 308 rounds for my Bergara Wilderness Ridge. My goal for this ammo is to achieve half MOA, to reach out and hit targets at 1000yds, and to be lethal out to around 600yds although I will probably never shoot at an animal that far. The specs for my setup are a 20" 1-10 twist barrel with a Sandman S mounted up and an internal magazine that restricts my possible OAL. Before I begin with my reloading process, I'd like to say that all the testing is done prone at 100yds with sandbags and a bipod also allowing the barrel adequate time to cool between shots. I make sure that everything on my rifle is torqued to spec prior to testing and my rifle is capable of regular half MOA with quality match factory ammo. So with some of the usual suspects out of the way, let's begin.

P.S. I have already loaded and shot the first firing of the brass but do to my lack of confidence is the testing procedures I used I decided to trash all of the data I gathered from the first firing.

My reloading process is as follows:
Deprime using universal depriming die
Clean out primer pockets on Frankford Arsenal Work Station
Use super fine steel wool to remove carbon on case necks
Brush out case necks with bronze bore brush
Tumble 2-3 hours in corn cob media
Clean out Redding Type S FL Bushing (.336) die and lube cases with Hornady one shot
Bump shoulders back .002" (All dimensions of sized brass was around +-.001")
Retumble 1 hour
Trim to 2.005" on Frankford Arsenal Work Station
Chamfer and Deburr
Swab out Case mouth
Prime cases to the stop (not necessarily crushing) using a Frankford Arsenal hand primer
Throw powder in RCBS Chargemaster
Seat bullets with Redding Competition seating die

My results so far in my second firing are less than ideal.
I performed a Modified OCW Ladder Test that consisted of loading in .3 grain increments 3 rounds a piece from 41-43.7 grains. Shooting over a chronograph (Caldwell G2) as well as round robin style for groups allowing 2 minutes between shots. The groups I have shot are a train wreck and seem to have no pattern or meaning to me. All groupings from this reloading project have been atrocious ranging from 1"-4". The velocity however pointed to a node at 41.9-42.2 (2450 FPS) and another at 42.5-42.8 (2500 FPS). I stopped at 43.7 grains because in my past testing I had some consecutive hard bolt lifts although I have not experienced that at all since so I loaded another ladder from 41-44.3 grains and again the nodes were the same and I also seemed to have no pressure signs. So next, I chose the lower node and loaded 6 groups of 3 at 42 grains and loaded CBTO of 2.152"-2.122" in .006" increments. The resulting groups were not ideal ranging between 1.4"-2.6" and the velocities ranged from 2451-2528 FPS. I have struggled with this chrono more than anything and getting random velocities as well as missing shots completely although it is always 15 feet away from the muzzle and in the most optimal light I can use. One day I can get 2450 with a particular load and the next day I come out with seemingly identical conditions and I will get +-100 FPS with the same load.

So here are my questions
Is it normal in a bad load to give you velocities that vary so drastically day to day?
Is there a problem in my reloading process causing these poor results?
Is it just that I chose a bad bullet? If so give recommendations for a good long range hunting match grade bullet please.
