Would binoculars, spotting scope or a kestrel be more useful for making hits at longer ranges? I’ve got about 1k to spend on one of the three. Help me out!

I’m currently running an old atn xsight for night time coyote hunting and am looking to invest in a thermal optic. I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on any good options for around 2000 dollars. I was also curios what everyone thought about magnification versus processor. At my price point it seems that I’m limited to a lesser processor/resolution and high magnification or a better processor/resolution with a lower magnification. Thanks.

Kelbly Kodiak action, 16” Brux 4 groove barrel in 308, Kelbly hunter stock glass and pillar bedded with textured finish, Bix N Andy trigger. Weighs 6.5lbs naked. Nightforce 2.5-10, atlas bipod.

Set the scope to 2.5x, pop off the bipod and suppressor and you have a rifle that carries like a 30-30 in the woods.

Set the scope to 10x and put the bipod and suppressor on and you have precision rifle very capable at 800.

Shoots half MOA or better pretty consistently at 100 with factory 168gr FGMM. And sub moa to 800 routinely.

It’s hard to see but the bottom group on the 800 yard target is mine.

Accuracy International AXSR in FDE purchased in .338, comes with the .338 bolt and magazine and 40 rounds of Hornady .338 Match ammo. Nightforce ATACR 7-35x56 TReMoR3 FDE mounted on a black Spuhr Mount. Also included a .308 barrel, bolt body and .308 magazine. B&T bipod mounted on there is also included.

Rifle has had 80 rounds fired through the .308 barrel, no rounds fired through the .338 barrel. The only wear on the rifle is from being mounted to a tripod.

Curious if anyone has noticed changes in quality/fit n finish on Tikka's rifles since the start of the war in Ukraine. I figure demand for rifles in Europe has gone up significantly(prepping), as well as Finland's economy possibly experiencing stress(they are right next to Russia and have recently stopped/reduced trade.)

I know that in the past in the US, folks have noticed decrease in quality of arms related to ban fears. Basically, quality goes down as companies struggle to meet demand as folks are panic buying.

After a range trip this morning, I discovered my 308 dope is superior to my 6.5 creedmoor. And I don’t know what is going on. To gather the dope below I used weaponized math due to not having a chronograph.

These loads were shot on two different occasions and ranges. I recently built a new range and the 6.5 Creedmoor was the flavor today. However they are both flat. And about a month apart in when the dope was gathered.

The weather was pretty similar, around 30 degrees. But today with the 6.5 I was battling the wind pretty bad. 20 mph with gusts up to 30mph. For the 6.5, targets 100 - 500 had the wind at 9:00, while 600 - 800 had winds at 10:30 -11:00.

600 wasn’t too bad but I felt like the wind was really giving me more fits than it should of. Past that I wasn’t consistently splashing on either side of the target. I will attach the 600 target to show how the vertical spread (after the first bottom right impact) was good but horizontal was very erratic. And once I went past 600, it felt like things went to hell in a hand basket.

Other notes. The 6.5 barrel is fairly new, I have about 160 rounds down the barrel. 40 in the first outing and 120 today. The only cleaning on this barrel took place after the 40 rounds with a bore guide, Parker jag and Hoppes 9. Patched until it came out clean. I boresnaked the 308 and that’s it.

I didn’t check my “group size” when I started today. I shot one at 100 and 5 at 200 which resulted in a small gray blob with the white paint being taken off, good enough for me.

I am leaning towards the 6.5 ammo being very slow.. and try some 6.5 precision hunter. But is there anything else I should look at?

Full disclaimer, the small tub has been modified with threads all the way through and a small reducer screwed into the powder out end. This mod does make the powder flow very well, in fact I usually have to shim up the front of the unit to slow the flow a bit, depends on the powder.
I use Varget,N570,N555,H1000,Retumbo,RL33,IMR 4977, H4831sc,H4895,H4350 in the V4 and they all flow very well.
