Input needed for 100 round max distance challenge

BLUF: New to long range, want to see how far I can shoot within 100 rounds from initial sight in to last shot taken. Need input on how to maximize the use of each round.

Long version: I'm a pretty decent shot, have reloaded for years, etc. Long range is something I've wanted to get into for years, and I dabbled in it as a teen with what was considered "long range" at the time and took a few elk at 400+ and one at over 500. Those feats are kind of trivial with all that we have at our disposal nowadays.

I guess I kind of wanted to get back to modern long range roots concerning the hardware with this self-imposed challenge. Obviously that statement is really subjective, but I identified it the last iteration of equipment that gave way to what we are using today, so right before super slippery bullets, optimized cartridge designs, and Christmas tree reticles became commonplace.

With that in mind I'm using the following hardware:

FN SPR A5M

SWFA SS HD 10x42
20250619_202221.jpg

175gr SMK
20250619_185403.jpg

I will be using modern software like a Garmin Xero, Ballistic-X, etc.

I already spent 10 of my shots getting a zero and confirming it with a 5 shot group (I did go through one box of 168gr GMM getting on paper and centered). Here are those 10 shots at 100 yards.
20250619_181619.jpg

In hindsight I may have wasted shots 6-10. I really wanted to see what the gun was capable of with this load so I took my time, but I had already sighted in two other rifles and my eyes were having problems really resolving the orange in the middle of the green. Regardless, this is how that group panned out.

What it did provide me with is an OK pool of shots to pull velocity data.
Screenshot_20250619_183015_ShotView.jpg

I plugged that in to get a starting point on my trajectory.
Screenshot_20250619_182742_Chrome.jpg

Obviously I could just cheat and set a target way out there and take 90 pot shots and probably make a hit, so I'm thinking maybe my "max" range will be the furthest distance I make 2 consecutive hits? 3? I need to decide on target size as well, but I like the idea of a full size IPSC silhouette.

I'd like input on where to go from here, I think the hardware combo is working well enough together, and I have exactly 90 rounds of the Sig left, all from the same lot. Would confirming drop at 300 be a logical next step? Does it need to be further? Thanks in advance!

Hypothetical: 1x fired --> annealed

Question for the smart folks:
Caveat - with reference to UR and his annealing tests with the AMP annealer

Say I buy a box of ammo (Berger uses Lapua brass) and I shoot it. I collect the brass, resize, anneal (let's posit that the annealing is done "right), clean (to remove any carbon from the neck), prime, powder, reload.

Can this brass, although fired, be considered the same as "new" brass now? Yes, it's been fired, but it has also been "returned to factory settings."

Does the 1x fired apply to brass that wasn't annealed and resized, etc? But does the annealing put it back to "new" condition?

UR got 76 firings out of one case.

Just a topic for discussion.

RIP JB Hodgden... co-founder of Hodgden powder

From their Web Site:

Hodgdon® Announces the Passing of Co-Founder JB Hodgdon

It is with profound sadness that Hodgdon shares the passing of John Brewster “JB” Hodgdon, who passed away on June 13, 2025 at the age of 88. A lifelong resident of Kansas, JB was born on October 16, 1936 to Bruce and Amy Hodgdon. JB grew up in suburban Kansas City and was extremely active in his hometown community with first responders, Scouting America (formerly the Boy Scouts of America), and the classic car community holding special places in his heart. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1959 with a degree in Business.

In his career, Mr. Hodgdon held many roles at the Hodgdon Powder Company. In the early days, he packaged powder at the family dining room table. He led international sales and served as the face of Hodgdon at industry trade shows. He served on the Hodgdon board in various roles, including Board Chair, for many years and was named Chairman Emeritus in 2025. With his brother Bob, JB Hodgdon continued the legacy of Hodgdon Powder Company started by his father and grew the company into the preeminent supplier of gunpowder and black powder substitutes for handloading and muzzleloading enthusiasts. Hunting trophies from around the world and his firearm collection in his home and Hodgdon offices are a testament to his passion for hunting and shooting.

“I have been associated with the Hodgdon family and JB Hodgdon for more than five decades,” said Tom Shepherd, Chairman of the Board at Hodgdon. “JB was a first-rate owner, an incredible professional and a valued friend and counselor to work for during my career. He will be deeply missed.”
JB was a devoted annual supporter of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a lifetime benefactor member of the NRA, a life member of the Kansas State Rifle Association and a member of the Safari Club of America, Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, and the National 4-H Shooting Sports. He was deeply devoted to supporting youth involvement in the shooting sports through his work with Philmont Scout Ranch, Scouting America’s National High-Adventure Base in Cimarron, New Mexico. JB and his wife Anne, through their charitable foundation, enhanced Philmont’s ability to support our nation’s next generation of hunters and shooters with a focus on safety. JB was inducted into the National Shooting Sports Foundation Hall of Fame (2020) and a co-recipient with his brother Bob of the NRA’s Golden Bullseye Pioneer Award (2009). Additionally in 2009, JB received the Shooting Industry Academy of Excellence Award.

JB is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Anne, along with his four sons, two stepchildren, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Though JB has left us, the legacy he leaves — of family, faith, hard work, and love for shooting and the outdoors — will continue to guide all of those who knew him.

After an intensive manhunt the dangerous Tulsa jaywalker was captured

Yep they actually had a man hunt for a jaywalker and then ran him over a Tulsa officer was also hit by the patrol car and no mention was made in the reports of “accidentally” running over the dangerous jaywalker . They were so scared of a man laying on the ground they forgot to mention that part .

The Tulsa PD has assured the public that no department policy was violated and jaywalking will not be tolerated unless part of a BLM riot.

Other good deal besides MPA builds

Im looking at getting into a 6mm cartridge bolt gun (6gt or 6dasher..havent decided between the two) to primarily shoot some local PRS matches.

I know the MPA factory builds with the CDG action are a very good deal especially with the PRS discount code. I really like the matrix pro2 chassis, but im not married to it (or even a chassis for that matter). I'm not opposed to buying an action/prefit barrel and "assembling" this, but I've never done that before. Looking up some of the costs of components it almost seemed like a much better deal to go with something like the MPA, and I wouldn't have to deal with assembly.

Anything else in that $2400-3k I should be looking at?

Thanks in advance.

Canadian Ranger rifles in the Arctic need replacements, don’t work in the cold

Canadian Ranger rifles in the Arctic need replacements, don’t work in the cold

By Emma Tranter

Department of National Defence says replacements will cost $8-10M

Rifles issued to the Canadian Rangers in Canada’s Arctic don’t work properly in the cold — and it’s going to cost millions to fix.

C-19 rifles were distributed to the Rangers, who serve the Canadian Armed Forces in the North, in 2017.

Canada’s Department of National Defence (DND) told CBC News in an email that extreme cold led to the stocks — a part of a gun attached to the barrel and firing mechanism that provides structural support — expanding and contracting. Something the department said Rangers noticed during testing in 2019.

“Following reports from Canadian Rangers after extended field usage in extreme climatic conditions leading to cycles of expansion and contraction in the stock,” Alex Tétreault, a senior communications adviser with DND, wrote.

“This was not observed during initial operational capability training; it only became apparent in the last two months before the end of deliveries.”

Those stocks now need to be replaced and the department estimates that will cost between eight to $10 million.

The department said the C-19 rifle “remains an effective and accurate weapon” and that some of the rifles are still working properly and don’t need replacements.

The procurement process for the new stocks is underway and the delivery of the new stocks will be phased over three years.

Logging In, Security and Old Accounts

Hey All,

Going through messages and the enhanced security has some people flustered.

We increased the security to also include inactive accounts due to the large number of outside hacks that compromised shared passwords. Your login was hacked somewhere else, you used the same password and email combo, they found you here and logged on. That is the majority of the issues beyond the spoofed accounts.

Spoofed accounts were when the scammers used a similar User name changing something small you didn't notice. They see who has things listed in the PX, pick a user and try to clone them as they can. We changed that again to try and prevent it. It's hard, they can add minor things to a user name and make it look similar.

The headache this caused was the worst as then people are reporting the real account, the scammers report the real account and nobody knows who is real and who is a scammers. We get flooded with reports, we then have to watch the real account because every scammed person reports the real user as they think that is the account that scammed them. It;s not

So all hands, we change a ton that also inconveniences real accounts for a minute, sorry it's like the airport, we all have to take our shoes off to check for smelly feet.

Please continue to report any account, especially low post counts that contact you unsolicited.

Lastly, we are manually approving X number posts on new accounts. That means new accounts that post will not immediately appear on the screen. We have a queue for use to clear each hour if we wanted too, but we clear a few times a day. This way we can double check accounts and remove the ones we know are scammers.

If you are using the PX, slow down, take a minute to look at the user name, and especially the post count. It will not match the original poster you actually want to speak too. This is a process and we took at big swing at it. So please be patience. We cleared out a lot, but because they can hack older accounts or ones with passwords found on other places there is really no way to stop them 100%.

Also we can recover hacked accounts so don't assume an older issue is active today because a month ago an account was hacked and today it's being use. We can fix and recover accounts, so again, slow down, look and don't assume.

Thanks for your patience we are working on stuff everyday to enhance security and the experience

Wrong car wrong person still beat the fuck outta him

It was kinda the same type car so totally justified.
Same type of car ; seen at night several days earlier - his “hunch” lead to a beating and false arrest but damn was he keeping the streets safe.
This is the dismountsdick style of policing - if ya live in a shit hole with high crime dont do anything about the crime just beat the fuck outta citizens and writing tickets .

What can I do with an Air Force N-8A Gunsight? FINISHED

Couldn't resist since it's working. An Air Force N-8a reflx/holographic/heads up gunsight from WWII. Used on M2 .50 machine guns in the B-17. I'm thinking it will go great with my Elysium AK. I'll have to install a dual 9v in series (18v) battery box, probably in the buttstock.
