I wish there was another way to do the chain drive train other than having a derailleur hanging down but it is what it is. I managed to bend the derailleur on two of my bikes. The bike shop just bent them back but the shifting is barely acceptable on one of them. It's kind of a back up ebike(the old Bakcou Storm) so I left it alone not wanting to dump money into it. I basically only use it nowadays for getting firewood back in the FS via the trailer I have for it.I’m pretty sure shifting under load has been worked out by this version
And your list of consumables per year is exactly why I’m looking at this. Even doing my own work that stuff adds up to the cost of a gearbox pretty quick. The Gates belts last essentially forever and the only maintenance the Pinion needs is an oil change every 10,000 miles
I’m not a cross country rider tracking weight by the gram so the weight isn’t that relevant. It’s also on the lowest, most central part of the bike where it will be less noticeable
I’ve actually built this already in my head. The bike clanging around my noggin is one of the unbranded Chiner titanium hardtail frames with some sort of mid-grade build. Then trickle in various carbon fiber and titanium pieces/hardware as funds allow
Suppose also until they refine a transmission better than Pinion is now I'll stay with old conventional drivetrain. Though it would be neat to have a transmission that was smooth and seamless between all the gears.
Are CVT transmissions being developed more> saw a video about a prototype one time??
I'm not super happy with my GX Eagle because the shifting is delayed slightly and when it's cold out it gets more sluggish or a shift is ignored like the signal didn't arrive so I have to push the shift button again. The battery on my ebike supplies the power to the GX motor so I don't need to be concerned there, however I changed the battery on the shift controller which didn't help much(a little better) at the time last winter. That same controller battery is still in my bike and the shifting is fine now because it's summer time.
