Wow, Ozzy's gone.........

To add to my post above, I put Iron Maiden in the same category as Ozzy. In fact, I believe one or more of their guys are actually Believers nowadays. When I was coming of age as a guitarist (during their peak), Iron Maiden and Ozzy were called “satanic”. Years later (and with the help of the internet to actually research), I can now look back and see that it was all theater. If you really listen to, or read the lyrics, the actual messages in the songs, were not what they were alleged to be about. For instance, the song “Number Of The Beast” was always seen as open Satanism. But it was actually written about a nightmare Steve Harris had after seeing the movie “The Omen II”. If you read them, the lyrics describe being horrified by “witnessing” (in a dream) a Satanic ritual, NOT promoting it. Most of Ozzy’s lyrics on the subject are similar. But most everyone loves a scary movie, or a trip to a haunted house at Halloween, and these guys tapped into that attraction.

Hunting & Fishing First Western Elk Hunt…Essential Gear/Clothing Advice Needed

If you have to tell someone to have a compass, good chance they don’t know how to use a compass.

It’s not like the OP is going to be doing 3 point resections then plotting his path to a safe return shooting azimuths back to the truck after getting lost.

Onx and things like it are cool. Just be sure to download the maps ahead of time, around where you will be.

GOHUNT for example takes some memory and gives you such a small offline grid. It’s kind of annoying. Especially for areas with huge public land.

Army M24 Build Thread

M24 Sniper Accessory Kit - 7.62 Improved Sniper Cleaning System. This was a later issue item that replaced the original sectional cleaning rod kit. OTIS Technology made it, and production had slight variations. This one has the lens cleaning items not often found in later issue. OTIS P/N: #308-6, NSN # 1005-01-451-5119. This kit was also included with DMR-M14, M240, M40. All the parts were finished in black with a polycoating.

(OTIS made another kit called SNIPER 7.62/5.56 with a different NSN# 1005-01-453-3783 that I believe was issued with the M110 SASS for the sniper/spotter team with M4 backups, not sure)

Brass Work Hardening Analysis by Alpha Munitions

I’m also the guy with two AMP’s, annealing every time, who still sometimes uses a Prometheus and has untold thousands in fancy ass dies. So I might be bitter and might be biased.
I shoot with a guy that may have more toys than Santa Claus. The Prometheus scale, a tool used to cut single kernels of powder (he's a reformed F-class guy), and every time I turn around he's got a new... something. All manner of calibers; just got into ELR with a .300 Ackley Improved he bought from a mutual friend of ours who thrives on building exotic stuff, shooting 100-200 rounds, and selling it.

In PRS-style matches, he beats me like a drum because he's 10 years younger (barely into his 60s) and his collection of injuries/surgeries hasn't affected his range of motion as it has mine.

But when we shoot from the bench with no time constraints... my ammo loaded on a Dillon progressive with RCBS dies against his ammo made on the best toys in Santa's sack... fired through barrels cut by the same smith... yeah, you're right, @Cynical ... I hang right with him. Maybe, in absolute terms, the returns aren't worth the investment.

But isn't trying to find a "magic bullet" fun? For me, it's not the podium that's the big reward - it's the journey and the experiences and people along the way, and I have no regrets investing in them.

So I'm seeing more and more short 308s in my neck of the woods seems odd

I just became aware that the military built an SAR25 in 14.5 and I know a few guys that loved a 16" scar heavy, which always seemed odd to me. Well I"ve been seeing more of them and just got offered one with a larue 14.5 barrel for a really good pricepoint. So maybe I just don't get it butwhat are some pros to a shorty 308?

Basically can someone explain the thought process of wanting such a short 308 from a functional standpoint or is it merely a because I can option. I get why you want the blackout at that length (or shorter)
It depends on the use case. If you think about it, a 20" barrel length is the "best" barrel length for a 5.56, but barrel lengths between 11.5 and 16" are more popular because they are handy and usually get the job done. Same thing goes for .308. Heck, if I needed more than my 11.5, I'd gladly take along a short .308 rather a long 5.56 if I needed more umph.
