New Contest Starting Now! This Target Haunts Me

Bow hunting in Colorado for Elk roughly 25 years ago. Last day of the hunt had a young bull sauntering out in an open field, the guide said to take him. Estimated the range at 40 yards, drew slowly on a broadside shot, easy release and the arrow stuck in the ground about 15 feet in front of it. Right in line with the vitals. The elk ran few yards farther away, I used my 50 yard pin top of the back, same result. I ended up flinging all 5 arrows at it in slightly increasing distances each time with the same results. Turns out an actual elk is GIANT compared to the small deer targets I'd been practicing on and with no trees or anything other than sage brush I underestimated the range by 25 yards. Actually 65 yards + first shot rather than 40. I never caught up. I did learn to do ground distance estimations after that though.

Subsonic big-bore loads

With cans and lever rifles getting more and more popular, I figured it might be a beneficial for those of us who have fallen down the big-bore subsonic rabbit hole to have a thread to discuss what's working for us powder, case prep and bullet wise.

My particular poison is .44 subs out of a Henry X and 77/44, but .357, .45 LC, 450BM, 458 Socom, etc discussion welcome.

Getting consistent accuracy out of these kinds of loads has been tricky for me, and my standards for good enough are a good bit lower than with my other rifles. Having tried CFE pistol, HP-38/W231, Longshot, HS-6 and AA#7 with a variety of ~300gr cast and jacketed bullets, I'm seeing the most success with AA#7 and HS-6 at this point. Having uniformly clean cases seems to have a large impact on 100yd accuracy with my .44s, I got some strange results with using vibratory cleaned vs wet tumbled w/armor all cases.

Below is some of the load development I've worked on.

I'm very interested to hear what's working/not working for everyone else.

Nightforce ATACR 4-20x50 Mil-xt or Schmidt & Bender 3-20x50 non-ultra short in Tremor 2 or 3

I have that exact NF on a .224 Valk. I like it just fine. I’ve never handled the SB you mention, but I have several of their PM IIs in 5-25 and one 6-36, and they are my favorites. I have the Tremor 3 reticle on a NF 7-35 and I’m not a fan of the reticle (the scope itself is great). The T3 is way too cluttered for me and makes spotting misses much harder. I like the NF Mil-XT or the SB TRID 2 (not GRID 2) reticles much better. A Tremor 5 might not be too bad but I haven’t tried one, and I’m not familiar with the T2. Also, I have read from folks here that the glass on the NF 4-20 isn’t as good as the next one down the magnification ladder in the ATACR line (3-18, I think ? Edit: it's probably the 4-16x50 model that @ma smith mentions below that I'm thinking of). No experience with that, but something to research if you’re still deciding.

Since you’re new make sure it’s the actual RemCustom6 that PMs you by clicking on his profile. I can guarantee you scammers are making accounts mimicking his username as we speak and will send you PMs looking to get paid. Just heads up. OP is a solid member and that’s a great deal on the LRH.

The riskiness of free will

How about I just homeschool my kids so they get a real education?

The "teachers union" will give toe nail fungus and bad breath if you try. 🤣🤣

An actual organized school offers a lot most homeschool kids dont get. School ain't all about learning the three Rs. 🤣🤣🤣

There are a lot of school districts I wouldn't want to send a kid to either. I don't envy what you guys are dealing with on the front range, with the group of people that have completely goat fucked my state into oblivion.
