Flooding in TX Hill Country/Kerrville

TEXAS FLOODS: In a stunning announcement Austin Fire Chief, Joel G. Baker, is accused by his own firefighters of blocking the deployment of rescue teams to the catastrophic flood zone in central Texas.
According to reports the state of Texas requested help but Chief Baker allegedly said no because of an $800,000 dispute with the state government despite Austin having the best water rescue team in the state.
The union says they specifically trained for Hill County… for this very moment…
Below is a statement released by the Austin Firefighters Association.
“The Austin Firefighters are outraged by Fire Chief Joel G. Baker’s decision to deny the deployment of our highly trained swift water rescue teams to Kerrville until July 4th, despite the State of Texas calling for assistance on July 2nd. Only 3 AFD rescue swimmers were sent—far too late to save lives.
Our Special Operations teams are some of the best in Texas, but because of Chief Baker’s refusal to deploy them, lives were likely lost. His decision, based on a misguided attempt to save money, is unforgivable. The department is reimbursed for deployments, but Baker failed to understand that.
Starting Tuesday, we’re launching a vote of no confidence in Chief Baker, and we’re holding him—and anyone else responsible—accountable.
We’ve held off speaking out while victims were still being recovered, but it’s time for the community to know the truth.
We hope you stand with us in holding Chief Baker accountable.“

Boeing down in India

They have found pieces of it off the coast of Africa, and other places. Some floating.

Mh-370 that is.

As far as I know even those pieces are "speculative". They have a part number for a 777, but nothing that actually identifies them as from that particular aircraft. Unless something has changed with some of the pieces found floating thousands of miles away from that aircrafts flight path.

My point was "nobody really knows what happened to that aircraft" in the grand scheme. Did it crash? hijacked? flown somewhere and hidden? Was it all on accident? On purpose? etc... Yet there are people out there still who will tell you with certainty what happened to it.

Which 300 Blackout barrel between these two?

I'd say flip a coin. Both are good barrels. I wouldn't burn too many brain cells trying to decide. 300 BO isn't a match round and it doesn't have the practical range to require anything more than decent accuracy.

I run a $100ish 8" Ballistic Advantage and it'll blow the center out of a 2" paster at 100 yards with a 3.5x ACOG running 110gr AAC Sabers. Besides, in my experience, for some reason, .30 cal rounds tend to exhibit an inherent accuracy. Unless you get something out of a trash heap, whatever you get will likely shoot more than well enough.

Night Vision Sig ECHO CV25 LWIR 640x512 Thermal Clip-On

Keep us posted. I'm very interested in this unit.

It's interesting I'm on the opposite side of the fence. I had a LRF Pulsar trail years ago and the LRF is super nice I just don't want to build a dedicated rig. I want to hunt with my stuff in the day and night. Maybe this venture will prove me wrong with the DNT Hydra. I'm kind of wanting to pick up a CV25 in 2026 though.

My LRF is day-n-nite

KAK products

I like the KAK stuff. I have 5 or 6 of their handguards. For around $100 they can't be beat. They are pretty beefy. I saw reference above to their quality being sufficient for a budget build and the barrel nut having a low torque spec, but I don't agree.

Aside from the Uber expensive handguards that employ some sort of extravagant lockup method, the KAK stuff locks up as well as or better than any other friction based system. My stuff tends to get beat up, so to me it's just one less thing to worry about. As for the torque spec being low, I don't think a 35-55 ft-lb spec is too low. I torque my barrel nuts to 50 ft-lbs anyway.

I've also used a bunch of their other small parts. Buffers and such. All of it ranges from good enough to very good.

I've had one experience with one of their downward venting bolt carrier groups. I pulled it from the rifle I was shooting to look at it. It's very nice, BUT I didn't think the machine work was as clean as it should have been. Lots of sharp edges, especially around the sand cuts. I'd imagine that could be fixed with some Emory cloth. The dual ejector setup was nice. Extractor and ejector tension is one of those things I'm always conscious of and the dual ejectors offer peace of mind.

If you're looking for budget parts, maybe check out the Expo branded parts at Primary Arms as well. I recently saw a video on YouTube about them and apparently, they source from some pretty reputable manufacturers. I just happened to decide to look into them one day because the crazy, stupid low prices they sell for on sale caught my attention.

I've never used any of their receivers. I have some sort of glitch going on in my head that makes me prefer receivers originating from Cerro, so I tend to seek those out these days.

No Fee for Surppressors or short barrell rifles

What's everyone expecting on wait times come January of next year when this takes effect? Should you just pay the $200 and not wait 6-9 months or will Ai auto approve these forms and not make us wait so long.
I would expect wait times to increase markedly, at least for a few months.
I find it funny that people would wait 6-9 months to save $200 on what is a luxury item.
2 years ago, when wait times were still around the year mark, if you had asked people if they would be willing to pay an extra $200 to receive their suppressor in days rather than months, I would wager that most would have said yes.
