PortaJohn

Two words come to mind…

Belt Fed.

I actually thought about this a lot last night and looking at it today, it makes me a bit sad… We’re being played just as much as the low IQ people on the other side are. They’re getting riled up by race baiters, or other “activists” like the assholes stirring up the free Palestine, or Aunt Queefa BS.

But we’re getting stirred up by BS like this too…

”They”…and I honestly don’t know exactly who ‘they’ are, but I have some ideas…want us all riled up, hoping someone does something stupid in reaction to a threat…perceived or real, it really doesn’t matter.

I will say if that was me at the playground with my first grand daughter who will be born later this summer, something bad would have likely happened. I’d have gotten her and whoever else was with us out of there first, and then marched up that hill to confront the asshole in charge of that troop of idiots…. Ask them kindly what the fuck they think they’re doing frightening children like that, and when the almost guaranteed asshole behavior ensues (on both sides), I’d probably wind up dead or in prison.

The trope about getting older means a life sentence doesn’t have quite the same deterrent effect is very true.

And that bothers me a lot more than it should. Good God, I’m becoming such a pussy in my dotage!

Accuracy International AT-XC

Finally got around to shooting the xc. Those are rounds 7-10 down the barrel shooting Berger factory 105 hybrid ammo. Looks like it’s going to out shoot me, which seems to always be the case.

Barrel wear Vs velocity/weight/energy

A simple question.

Is barrel wear just a function of velocity or is it based on energy?

At the moment in my 308 I'm shooting 168 ELD match heads at around 2700 ft/s

It's a new barrel and I would like to minimise wear ( don't we all!) I'm looking to improve performance at 1000 yds.

So should I increase velocity or increase bullet weight to minimise barrel wear.

All input greatfully received

Peter
As mentioned, HEAT is the big factor for barrel life. That heat is a factor of the powder you use. how much of it you use, rate of fire and ambient temperature you're shooting in affects how fast the heat will build up. This is the reason I have little temperature strips on my barrels just forward of the chamber to monitor the barrels temperature while I'm shooting and I stop shooting to cool off once they show 122°F. You can go hotter, but like you, I like to try and get as much use out of a barrel as possible (especially as prices are due to climb, given current economic environment).

There is a calculator that can help give you some idea how long your barrel life might be with your inputs: https://www.accurateshooter.com/technical-articles/excel-formula-predicts-useful-barrel-life/

Here's some numbers to give you some ideas:

.308 - Sierra 169 SMK loads

Get GRT, do your own homework. If memory serves, a standard 308 throat will be close to touch somewhere around to 2.90 or ~2.236 base to ojive. Depends on reamer and throat wear. This bullet just wouldn’t shoot under 1 MOA in my gun. Eyeballing the bullet shapes, I’d say the 177 SMK is a better option if you want to run one of the newer high bc sierras as it’s a less exaggerated ojive that shouldn’t be quite such a PITA to find how much it wants to jump.
The 177 SMK's performed nicely for me where I loaded them with 40.8 grs AR-Comp giving me ~2,650 fps with groups just under .5 MOA.

I still like the 169's the best. ;) :giggle:

American Ammunition Company 77gr SMK HPBT

When people are saying it’s “too slow” what do you mean by that? Too little energy, poor wind performance, too much drop? Attached are two dope charts for my rifle(16 inch barrel). One has velocity at 2610(fast stuff) and the other is at 2488(the average of the velocities of the four new lots posted above). I have my own thoughts about the data but want to hear what y'all think? View attachment 8684429View attachment 8684430
I get what you're saying. 200ish feet per second doesn't make much of a difference down range, especially with the 77s. I'd even argue that the slower velocities can be better because wind has less of an effect on the projectile.

Still, faster is generally better, as long as it isn't at the expense of accuracy. My problem with the AAC stuff is that the accuracy has varied pretty drastically from lot to lot.

For me, at the .50 per round sale price, it's still too expensive when you add on tax and shipping. As of recently, I've gone to the Winchester contract overrun stuff, loaded with the 77gr Match Burners. At .70 or less per round, shipped, it's a better deal because it is consistent. It's slow, but the consistency of accuracy doesn't leave me scratching my head.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to get any more of that stuff.

Man and his dog killed by bear in Florida.

Black bear attacks are rare. I'm curious to see what they come up with.

Just moved to Florida from Colorado nine months ago. I had never seen a bear wildlife road sign until moving here.

That’s because CO isn’t full of NJ and NY dipshits that have zero clue about wildlife like FL is overrun with.

Guy on motorcycle vs guy in car..... yeah.

You think that intentionally smashing into a motorcyclist because he was acting like an asshole is right? That act could have resulted in a pileup with multiple deaths and millions in property loss.
If that’s the way you want to take it, do you think someone in a car should just accept when a motorcycle swerves at them, screams and gestures, then reaches for their saddle bag? Well, I choose my life over his, every time….
