The new Athlon Ares BTR G3 2.5-15x50, initials, and ongoing thoughts.

Not quite the same scope, but I just added a Gen 3 Ares in 4.5-27x from Cameraland and I'm really disappointed in the glass. I put it on my Tikka 22lr thinking it would be a step up from my Helos BTR Gen 2 4-20 but less cost than a used Cronus. It's almost as if the focus on it isn't quite fine enough so at 100 yards, you can't bring the picture into clarity. I'm a big fan of the Cronus and Helos I have so I was hoping this would fall somewhere between, but It just isn't what I was hoping on the glass clarity.
I was really hoping it would have great glass.

I just bought a Helos BTR g2 4-20 as well and LOVE it. Great glass. I put it on my 6 arc and couldn't be happier with it.

Suppressors Mount or direct thread?

I have a fair bit of experience shooting suppressed, but until recently, I've never felt compelled to own a suppressor. I've always thought that shooting suppressed was more of a pain in the butt than it was worth.

I have, however, reached the point where I'm thinking that it doesn't make sense not to invest in a few. In any case, I have a couple of them coming. The big question that I have bouncing around in my head now is the attachment method.

It was my intention to just go direct thread, but the YHM srx system seems pretty cool. In my research, I've run across comments made by reviewers wherein they noted that the choice of mounting system can affect the sound of the report to the extent that it can make the difference between the report being painful to the ear and not.

Have any of you experienced this?

What upper receivers are you guys using to get a good thermal fit?

At least now you know you’ve been doing it wrong all this time! 🤣

I had to thermal fit some WOA barrels. And smack the muzzle end with a rubber mallet. Did they shoot better. Nope.
If I have a choice between a thermal fit and not having a thermal fit, I'll go with the thermal fit, just because it seems like it should be better.

I don't typically assemble an AR upper with bench rest accuracy in mind, but I’ve never seen a situation where I've taken a rig with a barrel that shoots 2.5 MOA, removed the barrel to re-install it into a thermal fit receiver and have it magically turn into a sub MOA shooter.

At this point, I think I'd prefer to have a fit that is a good slip fit or slightly loose, than a fit that is overly tight. At least with the looser fit, you can make up for it with some loctite 620 or 680. I mean, what do you do with an overly tight fit?

What I would consider overly tight is when you have to heat the receiver to over 350 degrees, just so you can get the extension started so you can pound the barrel in with a mallet. I imagine that under that circumstance the receiver has to be under stress that would cause some shifting when the rig heats up under fire.

What I'm saying is just a guess, but is based on my experience of going from an overly tight fit to a more loose fit resulting in much improved accuracy.

Ruger American Gen 2

I bought one last year in .308 for my gf to hunt with since my .300 win mag was too much for her. When I sighted that thing in it was hard to believe how well it shot, .75 moa with factory Hornady 165 sst. Ended up putting an omega 36 suppressor on it and she took her first deer with it. After that she decided she wanted it to look custom like my rifles so I did a barrel chop to 16.5 inches and got her an mdt field stock cerakoted in LV that she wanted. Looks way different now but still just as accurate and way more practical to move around for her.

Slugging barrels......Don't F'in do things like this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is why God made lead.
There are three guys and are top smiths...... and I'll say these three guys will tell you when they have used a lead slug.... they can get close to what they think the bore size is....and they are honest and will say.... it's subjective at best.

Vintage AI rifle or modern AI rifle?

I bought an AT with the plan being to have it replace my AE. After shooting both of them I don’t think I’ll be selling my AE though, I like the trigger better.

There may be a bit of personal bias/nostalgia playing into the decision since it was my first rifle but it does have some things going for it. The price of the older AI models in comparison to the AT blows my mind a bit though.
I have a ae mk3(bought new in 2013 for 3700, folder fde and tooley 6.5creed), ae mk2 that I bought for 1700, had an ax mk1, had another ae mk3, and had a 2016 at. The ae's all had better triggers and smoother bolt throws and cocking than the ax or at, at was the worst on bolt feel and trigger. The aics mag is most reliable with br based cases, seems like the at/aw mag works great with 308 and creedmoor based cases but need to some fiddling with shorter cases(not always) to run smooth. I still have my 2 he's don't plan on selling them, even if market was 5k on them. Og ai poors porn....

groups from ae mk3 with tooley barrel, shot off bipod and rear bag on gravel. 1st rd in bottom left group was gun settling into gravel, I should have dug in better for first shot. Ai's shoot good regardless of current or past. I can change barrels on my ae's in 15 minutes, but it does take 2 torque wrenches, barrel vise, and action wrench.
