Right on.

We teach setups from elevated positions and I tell attendees to ignore the angle if inside 200 which would be 99% of their potential problems.
Yes, there is a change due to angle but it is so small it is lost in the noise. Most misses are because the shooter is doing stupid shit on the gun because their position was out of their usual realm.

Also, don't most laser rangefinders and/or ballistic calcs. already compensate for angle?

Somebody has been fucking with Paint or PhotoShop.

A professional is not going to want OR need all that mechanical rest bullshit on such a short range setup.

Neither would they overtly skyline themselves like that.

There is SOOOOO much bullshit being slung out there hoping some of it gets clicks or gains traction.

Yeah...

I don't think that picture has anything to do with this event.

Probably a picture of a previous event with LE overwatch.

So just how corrupt has humanity become..................

My late grandfather used to tell us about all the corruption he uncovered when he was director of transportation for school district. His predocesor was doing things like buying new tires for all the busses each year. And paying the premium tire price for the cheapest tire they sold. The man who came to sell him tires was quite upset the gift was over.

His predocesor had 8 secretaries. My grandfather noticed they all just talked on the phone all day. He took out the walls in the rooms that divided their offices. They all quit and he didn't replace a single position.

Any time there is government cheese, that rats show up to collect.

Given that the public sector has been the industry with the most job placements/growth over the past few years, imagine how much grift is going on these days...

Yes, but...

Having used old school hunting cartridges with modest muzzle velocities and low BC bullets for high angle shots in the Austrian Alps, I learned the hard way that "it depends". Back then, we did not have a ballistic calculator on the smartphone in our back pocket.

Today, there is no excuse for missing due to uncompensated bullet drop. Take the straight line distance measured by your LRF and multiply that with the cosine of your inclination angle.

Example: 190 yards at 30 degrees would look like 190 * cos (30) if your trig calculator is set to degrees or 190 * cos (30*pi/180) if it expects angles in radians. The result is ~165 yards.

This is the horizontal distance your bullet experiences "full value" gravitational pull. Some LRFs will output this directly.

Now, look at your trajectory chart and ask yourself whether there is a significant difference between 190 and 165 yards. For .556 , 6.5CM, the PRC family, etc. the difference is insignificant. But a 8x57 Mauser can drop about 4-6", depending on bullet.

Quoting so it doesn't get lost in the drivel.

Dunno I doubt they'll get prints on the weapon, this sounds planned out. Keeping the spent casing in the chamber isn't something that a random shooter would do, especially if they had more rounds loaded up. The shooter went there with one job in mind, and that was kill Charlie, and allow the police to find the weapon and other ammo to send a message.

Always the possibility that the gun and ammo were either planted to throw off investigators or provided to the shooter/patsy by their handlers.
My first thought - it's a plant to distract, just like the two guys that were arrested yesterday. I'm not saying it isn't the real weapon, but my first thought is to be suspicious of it. In fact,I kind of was expecting them to find an old gun that most of us wouldn't choose for a critical shot given the much better modern options available (and I know a sporterized Mauser can be quite accurate). It would have had to have been pre-planted in the building earlier, I would think - it's not very concealable like a collapsible, modular MSR. Plus, I still think that shot sounded suppressed. 30-06 boom would have come right after the crack and dwarfed it, even with mic compression. Everyone who's heard another hunter take a deer nearby is familiar with that "crack-BOOM"

Edit: @Terry Cross posted much the same thing while I was typing (12:03 vs 12:04).

Everyone keeps saying 200yd but the maps show 200ft. Makes a difference to an amateur.
I saw that also.

200ft = 66yds = what I would have thought is WAY too close for the closest elevated position on that campus venue.

We have already determined from past incidents including the Mandalay Bay shooting that reporters and posters absolutely suck at terminology.
They have no clue of the difference between feet, yards, furlongs or fathoms.

More food for thought.....

Stop and think what a 30-06 would sound like at 66yds from the muzzle.
A Mauser in '06 wouldn't likely have a suppressor and that bitch would be deafening to the entire crowd. Even with the audio signal compression and nerd shit going on with people's phone vids, the shot report would have still been epic. Yet it was not.

The muzzle blast from a 30-06 would have had everyone videoing with their phone jerk like a motherfucker at the shot. None of the hand held phone vids translate to that.

Honestly I think the 30-06 muzzle report at 200 YARDS would have been more than experienced as well.

Lots of questions and head scratchers for sure.

Always a possibility in this age but…

Here is the supposed internal Teams message. The leaker didn’t take a chance obviously of a screenshot but took a photo with a difference device.

Short ar....somthing i can live without

They are super handy length wise. Imagine all of that stuff hanging on the end of a 16” barrel.

This reminded me of something.

RAIL length!

Even maxing out a 10.whatever with a 9-9.5" rail can get crowded real quick with enablers (light, laser, switches) and what not.
The shortest I'm willing to go at this point is an 11.5" rail is short as I would wish to go without cause would be 12.5" barrel. While I'm not familiar with some of the Hux and current flow through stuff, used to be back in the day shorter barrels needed longer cans for the same effect and one could get away with a Mini on a 14.5 and ultimately the same overall system length if you wanted the 12.5 with the same reduction.

But back to the rail thing...
Now it's become a thing where whatever barrel length, you get a rail thats - 0.25". While I'm all for protecting gas blocks and going for that seamless look with minimal exposed barrel IF you have a can....can we agree that this shit is kinda outta hand.
15+" rails on 16" guns; 17+" rails on 18" guns aren't doing anyone any favors with their fucking enablers. I don't need my fucking light/laser coming into my FOV at mid-level magnification.

Rifle Competition Events What would you change or do differently with current competitions/organizations?

even worse (better?)

in OK shoot for the Green in 2013 ish there was a std KYL rack big-small. Instead of losing pts you got negative for the value of that target if you missed.

still haunts me to this day.

you were also allowed to double the pts value if you wanted before the stage began - so target values went from 1-2-3-4-5 pts for ea hit to 2-4-6-8-10 pts per impact.

you were allowed to shoot at any target you wanted.

rack was at 500 yds. dont remember sizes

I start double pts and hit largest target 1= +2
second shot go to 2nd target and miss (-4) tot=-2
I shoot at it again and miss (-4) tot=-6
go to big one and hit it (+2) tot = -4
last shot go for 2nd and miss (-4) tot = -8

if i had the brains to just hit the large one 5x (score of a 10) I would have won the match. if i just got a 0 I would have been top 5. but a -8 dropped me to 14th. epic. lol

good ol mind f that the shooting sport needs more of.

Regards
DT

I remember that stage, was my first PRS match...
