Where to get ammo now post

Well instead of having several different post, I thought I'd set up a single post with "heads up" on where to get ammo. If you see or know of a place to get premium ammo that a lot of us are always looking for, post it up here if you don't mind.

If you could put the date and where it is located in the post and any other pertinent information.

Maybe we can help each other out for a bit while the ammo crunch is still going on.

April 2025 Topstraps Longrange (Midrange) Rimfire Challenge

Spring is finally here, well maybe but it's coming. I'm going to have my Long Range (Midrange) Rimfire matches again this summer. I think this is going on the 14th or 15th year and it's amazing to see how far this longer distance 22 rimfire shooting has progressed. We used to get eye rolls and snickers when sharing with others way back about what this round is capable of. Wasn't that long ago I remember bugging Sophia on Rimfire Central for a Longrange shooting section. Now it seems to be the latest fad which is great with all the new equipment and ammo becoming available. It was rare I saw anyone clean my 197 yard rack with targets from 10" down to 1" in 1" increments and get to sigh their name up on my ceiling, now it's getting pretty common.

I've kept the same price all these years but as everyone knows everything has gone up, paint used to be 99 cents now it's $9.00+ for good paint and I paint after every two shooters. Anyway this year it will be a $20.00 donation for each entry with Juniors (16 and under) being $10.00. You may re-enter but have to get in line again and wait your turn. I will still have 15 racks of targets at varying distances from 25 yards to 197 yards and usually a bonus rack/target each match so it may take slightly over 100 rounds for each match. I allow 5 sighters during the match a competitor may use at any time they feel the need to use one. A newer/inexperienced or a shooter having problems will be given sighters as needed to help them along. I like people to hit targets and have fun during their match and not leave frustrated.

I also have three (3) classes for the shooters based on ammo cost, from my experience ammo is the main divider for accuracy over equipment. The three (3) classes of ammo will be C: $6.00/50 and under, B: Over $6.01 to $14.00 and A: Over $14.01 This may change and I don't have a complete list made up which would be hard to list each ammo but will base this on prices normally found at the online shops and not a sale item. I've sure everyone knows about where their ammo falls, also anyone with a tuner may use it but will jump you into the A class automatically. No Benchrest style front or rear rests. Bipods (even Rempel style) sandbags or an attached monopod are OK. Any scope/rifle combo is allowed but if you show up with a BR style gun shooting in C class you may get a shifty eyed sideways glance wondering what's up with this.

The reason I do this is the real competitors will buy/use whatever they need to shoot at the top, newer less experienced shooters may show up and see this stuff and feel they can't compete and you'll never see them again. I size the targets so everyone hits a lot and there are a few smaller or gamble targets that can seperate the Top Dogs. I have a couple competitors that will put their $249.00 Savage MK II using Top Level ammo against any top level gun and won't feel intimidated. I give a free entry for a future match for each class winner and if a lower class winner shoots a higher score than the upper class winner they bumped out the upper class winner from a free entry. It's been done and adds to the challenge. If a Class B shooter shoots an 85 and the A class winner shoots an 84 the Class A winner does not get the free entry.

I have a covered firing line with two (2) benches, if I have help spotting they get thru in usually well under an hour. A competitor may come any time Friday, Saturday or Sunday to compete. I would like hearing and eye protection and chamber flags in guns. I am usually ready to start at 8 AM and continue till it starts to get dark. Any help in spotting/scoring is appreciated and keeps things moving along. We do spot and tell competitors where they hit/miss the best we can but we're not perfect.

Tentative Schedule for 2025 is:

April 11th, 12th and13th.
May 9th, 10th and 11th.
June 13th, 14th and 15th.
July 11th, 12th and 13th.
August 8th, 9th and 10th.
September 12th, 13th and 14th.
October 10th, 11th and 12th.

October match is the Season Finale, it's a timed event which is my favorite match of the year. I have at least a $100 bounty on the King. If anyone can beat his score I'll hand you a crisp $100 bill and you'll be the new King. 100 rounds i a bowl, One 10 round magazine and 20 minutes max to hit all the targets from 25 yards to 197 yards. 75 targets and I do remove the smaller ones to not get shooters stalled. A calculation is used taking targets hit/left, rounds left over if any and time left if any and it comes up with a number. FUN FUN FUN

Clue me in on why GDI sucks.

Hey all,
So it is nearly new car time and I have been pondering a new-ish Subie Crosstrek (The 6MT goes away for 2024 and still on the fence about the CVT tho the MPG is impressive and I have a 600 mile a week communte). Anyways, it ticks the boxes. More room inside that a 4runner, AWD, good MPG, timing chain instead of a belt, and not boosted BUT they run GDI and I see ere'body saying GDI sucks. Honest question here... Why does it suck? A little reading suggests that the right oil (something with a low brix number (?) aka less volitiles) and a seperator inline in the PCV system might keep the gunk in the intake to a minimum so what an I missing? TIA.

Edited to add. I am not a trade in every three years guy. I keep my rides until the wheels fall off. Current rig is 12 years old, 380K on the clock, and still gets 32MPG. Why yes, it is a Toyota.

Planning first full rifle build

Have played around with upgrades on my handguns and built up ARs from scratch, but got the long range bug last year. Currently have a Bergara Premier Comp in 6gt and have got that dialed in. So brain is jumping to a new project.

Interested in a 6.5 PRC build I can hunt with (no real long shots for hunting) and take out to distance on the range. But definitely some new things I'm not familiar with. Looking for some help to ensure I understand exactly what I need.

Plan is to start with an Impact 737r SA. I've read some people lean towards a medium action for 6.5 PRC in case they have long COAL on heavier bullets, but read plenty get by with the short action. But wanted thoughts as I'm certainly fresh to this cartridge.

Was going to pair with a Proof Carbon sendero profit and an AG composite stock.

Where I get lost is bottom metals. Especially with the 6.5 PRC being a larger round for the short action I get lost in the details. Not sure what I need here or what my options are. Do want a detachable box magazine.

Just looking for insight if the action is a decent choice for the round and to fill in the gaps on bottom metal and magazine options.

The darn dillon 9mm sizing die hour-glass shape

Hey there,

So I have been loading 9mm for years using a loadmaster and lee dies and have made thousands of rounds that always came out great and looked great. This past year I have been using a dillon progressive and decided to buy the dillon 9mm dies for the heck of it. I was confused after my first few resizes after seeing a crazy hour glass shape on the case and an even worse bulge when seating the bullet. I know the bulge isn't really that uncommon with 9mm, especially being a tapered case, but the dillon dies made this shape very exaggerated.

Sooo my question is for those that use the dillon 9mm sizing die, do you just simply put up with the look? I have done some research to discover this is very common with the dillon 9mm sizing die but let's be honest we still care about looks as well as function or none of us would tumble our brass until it's shiny. I'm debating using my lee die or buying a new die altogether for the xl750 but I just wish the dillon die didn't make such an ugly weird shaped case. The die itself is very well made and has a larger opening to assist with progressive loading which sounds good on paper but I don't know if it's worth having butt ugly rounds that look defective (even though I know they are 100% perfectly fine if not better for some pistols.)

Opinions?

Savage AICS DBM choices?

Building a new stock for my old Savage 308. Right now it sits in a Boyds Pro Varmint I bedded it into 10 year ago, which while serviceable, is a bit short for LOP and I just dont care for how it tracks under recoil. I pulled some really heavily figured cherry and some curly maple off the shelf and glued up a nice blank. My original game plan was to just reuse the stock Savage DBM and factory mags, mostly because they are old school blued steel, and I kind wanted to keep this rifle looking old school other than the SSTL Criterion barrel it currently has. Also plan on adding in some LRI pillars (will require a bit of modification to work with a Savage) and the LRI cheek riser. However, after looking at how the factory profile of the inlet, I decided I want to increase the thickness of the inlet under the front action screw as wood stocks are prone to cracking in front of the magwell. I also plan on a crossbolt in the front and rear of the magwell to help with that.

So other than the Savage factory part and Atlasworx, does anyone know of anything else? Im looking at the profile of the Savage and it looks really wide in comparison the Atlasworx which I think will cause issues with inletting as I dont want that wider and rounder profile of it.

22 Rifle lands / compare discussion, significant differences

The bore shots are labeled by the MFG below. Its interesting to see the differences in design, finish. All 3 were fired 1 day prior, Bore snaked only to clean.

CZ 457 - Clean defined edges on lands and bore is super smooth.
Volquartzen (VM-22) - still fairly defined, definitely the shiniest finish. I can't turn the borescope brightness down any further. The finish is like a mirror.
Vudoo - Notice the lands at the chamber are beveled about twice the length. Bore is not as bright but maybe the bore snake didn't clean as well.

The differences are pronounced in land / bore construction. There looks to be slightly different size lands too. All 3 for these shoot sub-moa at 50, It's sometimes a close tie on grouping but Vudoo always wins. They all have cold bore POI difference. Volq and CZ shoot very similar using the same ammo. I shoot SK Rifle match or Lapua Center-X. Vudoo loves X but SK shoots almost as good, just more flyers when X has hardly and or certainly much less. That's a bit of background on her rifles.

Just thought it would be interesting to show the differences, at least here's a reference. Perhaps we can build this thread with other 22LR similar bore shots. I would like to see a Anschutz, KIDD, RimX, Bergara, Tikka etc and other rifles, mostly used in matches.
