German Shepherd Training / Advice

Hey everyone,

We are looking at adopting a Shepherd and wanted to see if anyone here had any good training articles/books/approaches I could study to try and better train the puppy. Just looking for resources/insight into training methods/cool tricks/toys (like puzzle food bowls) and things to keep challenging the dog outside of the fitness side of the house.

We grew up around dogs and have had dogs for many years just never a Shepherd.

Any help here is appreciated, thank you!

Suppressors Abel Theorem Brake

Ordered two of the new Abel Theorem brakes amd they arrived today. I went out to the range and shot with them, one on a Theorem and the other on the Thoerem-S. Noticeably less recoil, zero POI shift, took the suppressors off and reinstalled them, shot again, and zero shift as usual. Abel seems to have done an excellent job developing the brake and not surprised after shooting with both the Theorem and Biscuit suppressors for a few months now.

I was told the Theorem S had slightly less recoil and I’d say that was my experience but both were noticeably less recoil. Of course the Theorem is a few decibels quieter so I think it’s just a personal preference but very happy with both.

Grand opening, hallway 10meter indoor range.

So my spotter, who is also my room mate and (bed hog) & I have not had a call out, neither Federal nor criminal, in a while.

And you know how it is to have the itch.

And rifleman such as yall's know the imperative need for frequent rimfire therapy.

Seeing as how the vehicle is down/getting a new tranny, (no wheels at the moment) and it's 181* outside @ 214% humidity, we held a quick meeting.

We unanimously voted 2-0 to open & launch the "Hallway Indoor Shooting Range," in our condo, here in the 'plex!

The trusty tape measure witnessed we could get a range of a full 10 meters, ha! Classic indoor air rifle, off hand, competition range.

So out in the garage an old ugly worn pine 4x4 post has been floating around. We cut it up and screwed the pieces together to make a 1 ft. x 1 ft. x 1 ft. Cube back stop. Tally-ho!

I had my eyes and ears, but dip-wad of course couldn't find his ear-pro. We improvised.

I keep telling him if I ever find a better spotter that's available, I'm done with his jerk self.

I mean it's like at my every stinking shot he's got some rash of crap for me:

"don't let that miss rattle you, this next shot, if you'll, like, use an eyeball or something, and actually look through the scope maybe, this next shot will be better, surely- I can feel it in my tail."

Or something like:

"ok, that last shot, surely you were randomly experimenting with using your thumb to pull the trigger. Yeah, don't ever do that ever again not even once. You're embarrassing us."

And that one time he exclaimed "hurry, hand me the radio! I'll call down to the pitts and tell them you got in a hurry on that one and chambered the round backwards, = flyer city. "

Total prick. But I cant find a better team mate.

Tonight I just kept saying "shut up mother Hubbard and just call the correction."

(And what's with the peeing anywhere/everywhere at the ranges?)

Such has been our relationship the last 2 years.

Anyway- I drug out the super cool Rascal

An an old box of CCI SUB-SONIC that had a bit of black mold inside the box and white lead salts on the projo's.

We set up a bench to first see if the ammo was actually able to put shots touching at our formal 10meters, before He & I duel'd it out, off hand.

Happy to report that crappy ammo and the Super Rascal would make bug holes despite the powdered out white lead salts and all. Some of the bullets looked like old, dug up Civil War slugs, lol.

After bench testing the world's worst rimfire ammo in Condo Hallway Range of The 'Plex, I was about to put away the bench rest set up- when my spotter, his name is Sgian-Dubh- made the fatal mistake.

He said "if you ever tell any one what I was using for ear-pro just now, Im ripping your throat out in your sleep."

Well, Im THAT GUY. Tell me what I had better not do, or threaten me, or dare me, and something in me MUST then do it. Even if I know I'll quadruple highly regret it later. So I snapped a Pic. Ha!
Smart mouth, captain comedy spotter man.

And I won the 10m offhand competition too. Ha!
Mr. Mouthy, a sore loser claims I have an unfair advantage: opposing thumbs.

Whatever, Mother Hubbard.

He said "it's called off *HAND,* idiot."

Boo-hoo, Mother Hubbard.

Big fun all around with me and my spotter.

Round 2, tomorrow!

Brand New to Reloading: 7PRC Load Development

Hey all,

I’ve never reloaded and am looking to see what I can do in working up a load for my 7PRC. I’ve done a fair bit of reading but would really appreciate input from those with firsthand experience, especially loading for the Berger 195s.

Right now I’ve got:
  • ~60 rounds of factory 175 ELD-X left (pre powder change so getting 2,915 out my 22” barrel)
  • ~160 pieces of once-fired Hornady brass
  • Access to a buddy’s press and reloading gear
I know Hornady brass might be a little soft and not as consistent as ADG/Peterson/Lapua, but I’d like to make the most of what I have before upgrading.

Reloading Plan

Here’s the process I’m planning to follow:
  1. Deprime and clean the brass
  2. Use a dummy round and comparator to find the lands, then back off 0.010-0.020” for initial seating
  3. Run a powder charge workup to find a velocity node for best SD/ES across similar charges
  4. Once I find a charge that looks good, I’ll fine-tune seating depth for accuracy
My main goal is low SDs and consistent accuracy at distance. I’m not trying to push speed, especially if it means burning out barrels and pressure signs, but I’m hoping to get at least 2800 out of my 22” barrel, which seems doable based on others’ 7 PRC load data. From what I’ve calculated, that’s the bottom end to keep the Berger 195s stable.

I’d also be open to the Berger 180s if they prove easier to tune, but I like the idea of running the heavier 195s in this caliber for the extra BC.

Powder Options

I’ve been looking at:
  • H1000
  • N560
  • N565
  • N570
It seems like:
  • N565/N570 offer higher velocities due to the size of the powder and case capacity, but might be more temperature sensitive and tougher on barrels
  • H1000 seems to be more temp stable and forgiving, even if slightly slower
Any input on how these powders behave with the 7 PRC, especially with Hornady brass, would be really helpful.

Dies

Haven’t bought dies yet. Do I need to jump into high-end dies to get .5 MOA or better, or will I be just fine with solid full-length sizing dies? Trying to keep it simple but not cut corners if it matters for consistency.

Primers

My plan was to run whatever large rifle magnum primers I can find are. Not sure if there’s stuff to watch out for from different brands, but figured there’s not much variation there just making sure I can ignite the powder.

Open to Suggestions

Totally open to any advice, this is my first time reloading. My buddy is helping me get set up, so I’m more focused on learning a repeatable, consistent process than squeezing out every last FPS. If you’ve got tips for brass prep, pressure signs to watch for in 7 PRC, or seating depth tricks, I’m all ears.

Thanks in advance for any guidance, excited to start tuning and see what this rifle can do!
