Is the SMASH 3000 Another Version of the Tracking Point?

This sighting system has been out for a few years now. This first article is from October 2022.

The Army is officially adopting a ‘guaranteed hit’ smart scope

This is the company that is producing the SMASH 3000. They don't have any purchasing information but I bet the device probably costs close to $10,000 or more.

This video is a little boring but shows the capability of the sighting system. The only downside that I can see is that they need to produce a version with night vision / thermal capability. Maybe the device is night vision compatible. I haven't read enough about it yet to know what its full potential is.

Using PMII 3-20x50 on TRG 22 and SP10 with QDP-4602 – viable plan?

Currently running a Schmidt & Bender PMII 3-20x50 on my Sako TRG 22 (6.5 Creedmoor) using a Spuhr ST-4701 (35 mm height, 7 MIL cant, direct to dovetail).

I recently bought a Seekins SP10 in .308 (18” barrel) and I’d like to run the same scope on both rifles.

I’m considering switching to a Spuhr QDP-4602 (34 mm tubering, 38 mm height, 6 MIL cant) and installing a low-profile 0 MOA Picatinny rail on the TRG.

That would let me swap the PMII between the two rifles using QD, and use marked zero offsets.

My questions:

1. Do you think this is a solid plan or would you recommend running two separate optics instead?

2. Is there any practical downside to the increased scope height on the TRG (from 35 mm to 43 mm centerline)?

3. Any experience with RTZ performance using QDP mounts across bolt and gas guns?

Appreciate any thoughts or feedback!

Paging BuffaloWinter, please pick up the White Courtesy Phone…

Interesting mag and configuration…

Loach pilot, probably late ‘60’s or early ‘70’s. Pic from random Facebook posting.

IMG_8046.jpeg

Some are saying this was a 30 round mag that some of the SF and aviation guys bought mail order from US. 30 round at mags. I know they have been available, if not issued.

Some are saying that these were “field conversions,” putting an AR feed lips on an AK mag to increase capacity (which seems unlikely as AR mags are aluminum and AK mags were steel (and some Bakelite/polymer).

Any insights? Also interesting Grenade launcher configuration. Like an early 203.

Anything you recognize? Or built?

And I considered it might be an AI image… but looks more like an old Kodachrome.

Cheers, Sirhr

Precision Rifle Gear Pfl338 3d printing goods

So I have been meaning to do this review for some time but life has been bonkers the last 6 months.

I wanted to highlight some of the products that @pfl338 makes that make my life easy easier.

He is a humble guy and shooting enthusiast who quietly makes awesome 3d printed products some that I have been using for several years.

If you have an AI you need to get one of his mag paddle releases. Anytime I play with another ai and it doesn't have that mag release I'm like ugh that sucks when trying to do a msg change. Yes I run it backwards as I prefer the smooth side to my finger sausage.

He makes a great trigger shoe as well. .

Lately been running his Garmin pic mount. Comes with a slot to store the Garmin mount screw.

I also have been running his sled for single loading some really long 300 NM loads.
20250419_090604.jpg

He also makes my empty chamber indicator in orange that loads like a mag.

He also makes these awesome 8lb and 1lb powder funnels. They screw onto the jug so no more spilled retumbo. They also flip around and allow you to easily pour powder back into the jugs from the hopper.

WTB Tripod

ETA, got one, want another

I'd like to trade into a nice rifle tripod set up that could safely and securely support a 13-15 lb precision rifle set up - HK USPs, S&W revolvers, real West German made SIG 220's with sharp hammers, maybe optics, maybe rifles on the table depending on the rig available. Cash possible either way depending on the trade, or outright if it is a smoking deal.

Would prefer a pic rail interface for mounting the rifle on the ball but ARCA wouldn't be a deal killer.

Bigger balls better, have and like a 60mm

Note- I'm 6'2" and my sons are 6'5" - looking for something tall people can use.

Rifle Scopes Vortex RG3 6-36x56, Element Theos 6-36x56 and Zeiss LRP S3 6-36x56 Review

I will soon update the Hide with full review: Vortex Razor Gen III 6-36x56, Element Theos 6-36x56 and Zeiss LRP S3 6-36x56 Review

TLDR Version

FINAL THOUGHTS

I have been impressed with Japanese OEM scopes for quite some time, but I must admit that these new 6-36 scopes have the secret sauce, they are some of the best scopes I have seen come out of Japan optically and possibly the best I have seen from Japan to date overall. Overall, I think each of these scopes offer excellent performance per price – meaning they punch above their class while each offer some different features that different shooters will find appealing. Each of these 6-36×56 get my “best in glass” thumbs up!

So here are my personal thoughts on each of these scopes:
  • Zeiss LRP S3 6-36×56: Zeiss was smart to bring this scope to market, they are brand new to the FFP world but have one of the biggest names in the industry. They started with the LRP S5 which is their premium line of scopes; however, in some ways I think I like/prefer the S3 even more than the S5, yes the S5 does have an edge optically but honestly it is not much (and maybe differentiated more in harsh lighting conditions). The turrets are outstanding, the optical quality is excellent and the overall ergonomics are really well thought out. This scope is a real winner in my book and based on its price point I feel it punches well above its class (as do the rest of the scopes here). If I were to split hairs about anything it would be the performance at 36x, while not bad the Zeiss was not able to resolve as well as the Vortex and Element at the top of the magnification, but it wasn’t by any means lacking.
  • Vortex RG3 6-36×56: The RG3 comes with no surprise as to its performance as it has impressed me since day one of its release. Optically this scope holds its own with some of the best in the industry and has laid the groundwork for other manufacturers to take notice, hence the focus of this review – how well do the other OEM 6-36 designs compare. I still think the Vortex has the slight edge optically but the other scopes are very close. Coupled with the industry’s best warranty this scope is the premium choice, but it is also the most expensive out of the three.
  • Element Theos 6-36×56: The surprise of this scope is the nicely engineered toolless turrets that rank very close to Tangent Theta. The feel of the turrets is also excellent giving the scope a refined feel that, coupled with the excellent optical performance, really makes this scope stand out. Element has been around for a while and has impressed with price per performance, but they do not have the market awareness as the likes of Vortex and Zeiss; however, this scope has the potential to really help with name recognition throughout the community and I could see Element gaining more brand awareness as they continue to listen to the community and deliver top quality optics at excellent price points. Speaking of listening to the community, that is one advantage the smaller manufacturer has – they are able to get boots on the ground and not only listen to what the community is asking for but also execute on that quicker.
Reiterating what I mention at the very beginning, I am biased (we all are) and I have my own preferences and this review has opinions that are influenced from that, hopefully I’ve done an adequate job throughout the review to share where my personal preference comes into play in order to help you better evaluate a particular feature. I utilize a strict testing regimen, but it is by no means perfect, always open to constructive criticism. I do not like giving numbers to any scope because there are so many factors that could affect outcomes at any given time, so any numbers I do provide are meant to be for that day and against those scopes I could test side by side. Give me the same scope on another day and it might fare a little better or a little worse due to any number of variables, not the least of which is atmospherics which are constantly changing.

One final thought, I think many manufacturers need to do better at adapting to market needs quicker, too much time and you begin to lose market share in this ever changing world of FFP sport optics. “Adapt or go home” is becoming the name of the game as the market gets more and more saturated with excellent options, and I think Vortex, Zeiss and Element have done well, very well, with these new 6-36 scopes.

Temp Stability Test in 6mm Creedmoor with N160, N555, & H4350

I decided to do a little temp stability testing today. TL;DR all 3 are temp stable.

I recently finished developing loads for my PRS gas gun in 6mm Creedmoor and N160, N555, & H4350 all gave good results with 108 ELDMs. H4350 & N555 both showed excellent velocity consistency over 20 shot samples. N160 was not quite as good as the others but was still more than acceptable. N555 and N160 showed the best dispersion results but H4350 wasn't very far behind. The best overall performer has been N555 and it's less expensive than H4350 to boot. So the only question left is temp stability since I live in Kansas and 30-40 degree swings over the course of a day or from day to day are not uncommon.

Vihtavouri lists both N160 & N555 as temp stable so I decided to see how they stack up with H4350 since that is kinda the gold standard for the Creedmoor case.

I loaded 15 rounds of each powder, froze 5, heated 5, and left 5 of each at room temperature. I would have liked larger samples but felt that 5 shot averages would be good enough since all 3 powders had shown consistent velocity during my earlier testing. I also wanted to try to test all 3 at the same temperatures or at least as close as I could get and decided that would be easier to do with smaller strings.

Test protocol: All rounds were loaded in a single session with components from the same lots.

The frozen rounds were put in a plastic bag in the freezer at -2° for 4 hours and then put in a cooler with ice for the trip to the range. The temp in the cooler was measured at 15° at firing time. Each 5 shot sample was fired less than a minute after being pulled from the cooler and the rifle was allowed to cool for several minutes in between samples.
20250419_160427.jpg

The heated rounds were put in the dehydrator for 4 hours with it set at 115°. I wrapped them in a towel on the dash and ran the defrost every few minutes to keep them warm on the trip out and while waiting to be fired. The temperature of each sample was measured at 105° right before being pulled out for firing. Each sample was fired within a minute of being removed just like the frozen test rounds.
20250419_155555.jpg

The room temperature rounds had been in a 68° house prior to the trip to the range and were kept in the pickup cab prior to being fired. The temp in the ammo box was measured at 76° probably due to the defrost being run. These were also fired immediately upon removal.
20250419_160928.jpg

The test was fired by my Seekins SP10 with a 22" barrel and load data was as follows.

Starline SRP Brass
CCI 450 Primers
108 ELDM
2.200" Base to Ogive
40.0 gr H4350 (AVG 2846.4, SD 5.5, ES 24.7)
41.0 gr N555 (AVG 2840.4, SD 6.4, ES 24.3)
41.5 gr N160 (AVG 2865.2, SD 9.9, ES 43.5)

The only difference between the samples was the powder used. Listed after each powder is it's velocity performance over a 20 shot sample from my previous testing.

Ambient conditions this afternoon were mostly cloudy, 56°, and high humidity.

Results: Keep in mind these are 5 shot samples so the SDs aren't all that useful. I think the averages at least are in the ballpark of a larger sample but I would expect them to change up or down a few fps if the sample size was increased.

H4350 -
Cold 15° AVG 2854.3 SD 6.1 ES 15.6
Middle 76° AVG 2867.0 SD 4.9 ES 13.6
Hot 105° AVG 2864.8 SD 6.7 ES 17.9

This is pretty much what I've been told to expect from H4350 and is excellent.

N160 -
Cold 15° AVG 2822.0 SD 8.6 ES 24.4
Middle 76° AVG 2849.5 SD 10.0 ES 31.2
Hot 105° AVG 2850.1 SD 18.1 ES 48.8

This is also very good with a less than 30 fps increase over 90°. My earlier testing showed N160 to not be as consistent from a velocity standpoint as H4350 & N555 at least in my gun and that was also the case here. Having said that it has still shown good velocity performance and excellent dispersion so I wouldn't hesitate to recommend giving it a try. It's also the most affordable of the 3 at around $300 for an 8 pounder.

N555 -
Cold 15° AVG 2840.4 SD 9.6 ES 23.5
Middle 76° AVG 2847.2 SD 2.0 ES 5.7
Hot 105° AVG 2832.3 SD 3.3 ES 9.1

This is the most interesting result with the hot rounds being the slowest but still excellent results. It has also been on a par with H4350 when it comes to velocity consistency and even better with dispersion in my gun.

I'd say all 3 propellants are what I would call "temp stable" with H4350 & N555 being outstanding and N160 being very good.

I’m selling my Tacops delta 51 in 308 with Tacops suppressor. I bought this from a sheriffs dept in Washington State. They were unsure of round count, but it’s high…think 8-10k rounds, but it still hammers for me with 168 fgmm. I will pay my side of the suppressor transfer fee.

Edited to add some pics I found.

Good vibra tumbler?

I am a SS wet tumbler guy but loading .223 it is getting out of control with the amount of time it takes. What is a good media tumbler for an initial clean. It will be ran in the back of the house so noise is an issue.

Also what media should be used for a rough clean?

My plan is to dry tumble with primer pockets in, run them through the brass prep stage on the 650, wet tumble to get lube and clean primer pockets some, dry and run through the load tool head.
