Sidearms & Scatterguns Top Pistolsmiths List attempt

As most know i'm a bit of a pistol guy and specifically a 1911 guy. i get asked alot about where to send a gun for misc work. i found most of this list on another site but added a few they missed figure this will get most pointed in the right direction. I added a lot to these lists and took some of them from other sites but figured it would make a nice starting point for people.

This list so far. Of course this is just opinions, but it's fun. Obviously there is no real way to rate the top "x" number of gunsmiths, so there are no wrong answers. There are some beautiful guns to look at if you follow the links. Alphabetical order by first names..

no i do not have guns or have shot guns from all of them, but through word of mouth and pics online these all seem to be good to go. if someone can say otherwise i'll add or remove names as needed. currently i own guns from steve morrison, chris james have shot ones from hilton yam, dave berryhill, chuck rogers, ned chrisiansen, jason burton and Don Williams and would not hesitate to order from any of them.

Savage 110EP < (What is here?) < MPA PMR

Little background: I mainly shoot 2 and 3 gun matches. My local matches regularly go out to 500-700 yards though, and a friend and I hand load 77gr rounds for it. Combined with buying a Labradar, starting to do more dope calculations, and having people at matches constantly talk about PRS - I have started looking in to a 6.5CM setup to try out PRS.

Forewarning - It gets a little scatter brained from here.

I'm not necessarily trying to go crazy out the gate, but I also am not trying to buy a starter rifle I'll be looking to replace everything on after a year or two. I went down that rabbit hole with my 3gun setup. I will also preface this by saying I have a 6 week old, and am currently armchair quarterbacking this thing since I have a couple months before I will really have the time to actually go to an event. Plan A would be go hold a bunch of peoples rifles, but I don't think I have the strength and patience to wait that long. I am also left eye dominant, which complicates things a bit - specifically when shopping for a used chassis.

Research so far has lead me to the following if I were to build:
Origin action, prefit barrel (probably proof research), MDT ACC chassis. Chassis is a huge cost and overkill, but I'm not gunna lie I just like it. Still learning the terminology, but I am looking for a chassis more along the lines of the ACC, not the Oryx.

My issue is (rough math): $1000 action, $600 barrel, $1000 chassis, and $500 in trigger/muzzle brake/barrel vice etc. - you're at a >$3000 rifle. For $2425 I could just buy an MPA PMR and call it a day. Given the resale on one of those, this seems like the safer route for a first long range rifle vs. going the custom route.

Thought #2: a Savage 110 Elite Precision can be had in LH for $1600, which comes in the MDT ACC chassis. So effectively $1000 less for the action/barrel/trigger vs. the above build. However, certainly not the same level of refinement and reliability as the origin action.

Summarizing all of this in one question:

For a first PRS focused rifle, is there a better option I am missing between the Savage 110 and the MPA if I'm stuck on having a chassis?

Thanks!

Wyatt’s/Hawkins m5 Obendorf In Manners LRH?

Anyone know if the Wyatt’s Cbe-4 kit and the Hawkins m5 Obendorf bottom metal work with a manners m5 mini chassis in an LRH? Trying to identify what I’d need to run a 300wsm in my SA with the most room.

Also open to other suggestions for a BDL setup if anyone has one. May need to swap over to the micro chassis if the mini chassis doesn’t allow it

"I have ordered 14,000 of these so far. Need I say more? For those of you using bullet feeders they work just great."

"Fantastic deal on frangible bullets! I had excellent results out of a CZ Shadow 2 with 4.3 gr Titegroup, 1.13 OAL, .375 crimp producing a flat shooting round with a power factor of 128k."

"I have purchased frangible 9MM ammo before and sometimes wouldn’t recoil enough for the slide to load the next round. I bought these and loaded them with my standard load for the 115 gr JHP bullets and they worked great and were as accurate. Can’t beat that!"

Suppressors Suppressor For AR15 6.5 Grendel & AR10 308

Looking for suggestions on a suppressor that I can rotate on my AR15 6.5 Grendel and AR10 308. 20 inch barrel on my 6.5 Grendel and 18 inch on the 308. 6.5 Grendel has a SA Adjustable gas block, can remember on my 308 if it has an adjustable one or not. If not I’ll replace it and put one on it. Have experience with suppressors but only on bolt guns thus far. I currently have a DA Nomad L and Rugged Razor 7.62. For these two rifles so far I’m considering an OCL Polo 30, OCL Infinity, FOR Systems Monarch 7.62 and Diligent Defense Enticer S. Sound suppression and ease of setup are my main priorities. Will be used for hunting and maybe occasional plinking. Any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

6 ARC headspace

So... got an 18" 6 ARC barrel with a rifle gas system, and type II bolt a while back, and finally got around to shooting it not too long ago. It's a new cartridge for me, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I've been using the L.E. Wilson case gauges, along with their case gauge depth micrometer in other cartridges with great results... so I was a little shocked when I dropped a fired case in the gauge and it visibly stood proud of the top  Ran the depth mic down, and it showed it at +11 over '0'. Plunking an unfired factory round in there showed as -3 or so. That range seems... excessive, to me.

Like most comparators, that thing is still a 'relative' measurement. I dug out the appropriate shoulder angle insert for my Sinclair headspace comparators, mounted them on the Mitutoyo calipers, and zeroed things out. Loaded round measured 1.128", fired cases measured 1.141" or so. Yikes.

Coughed up the $$$ for a set of go, no-go and *field* gauges in 6 ARC. When they finally arrived, I got the following measurements:

Loaded round: 1.128"
Go gauge: 1.130"
No-go gauge: 1.134"
Field gauges: 1.138"
Fired brass: 1.141"

Then, I went and pulled the upper apart, popped out the ejector pin from the bolt, cleaned the bolt and chamber (never seen that much brass buildup in *either* the bolt or the chamber of my .223 ARs), and found that the bolt would rotate closed on the go gauge (as it should)... but it also closed on the no-go gauge, and damn near closed on the field gauge.

I double checked the depth of the bolt face; it is a type 2 (0.136" deep) bolt.

I'm guessing this isn't supposed to be the 'normal' amount of shoulder stretch on firing factory ammo in a 6 ARC barrel?

Any ideas what might be the likely culprit here? Chamber set up for a type 1 bolt (0.125" deep) instead of a type 2? Seems like that would almost account for the difference I'm seeing here. Or more likely the chamber is just f$cked up, some other way?

The fired brass coming out measuring longer than the chamber is another one that had me going 'WTF?!?' Someone else suggested that it might point towards a gas system issue, with the bolt trying to unlock before the pressure has dropped enough for the case shoulder to release from the chamber walls.

Rust and BT Eliminator/Carbon Remover

In this megathread, @Frank Green talked a little about having his barrels coming back for issues where BT products might have something to do with it.

Well I did have an issue with BT Eliminator and Carbon Remover that had to do with fumigation, high heat and humidity. I live in SoCal where humidity is not an issue. All of my rifles are in safes with Goldenrod dehumidifiers in them and I have had no corrosion issues in any of my guns in the 40 years that I've been an avid shooter... up until now which came from what I think are unusual conditions for me.

To start, let me say I have been using BT Eliminator and Carbon Remover almost exclusively for my precision rifles for probably 10 years with identical cleaning technique. I clean according to the directions on the bottle, then I use 2 patches to dry the bores and then put them back in the safe. Never had an issue with corrosion or anything else. I like and still use BT products because they work well, they are not toxic like most of the other bore cleaning products, and they are easily available.

I had a safe full of rifles and I only found minor rust in 3 of them which all had 416R stainless barrels and all had been very recently cleaned with BT Eliminator and Carbon Remover. I followed the directions for use on the bottle exactly and when I was finished used two clean patches to dry the bores. The rifles were a PVA barreled 223 on a Rock Creek blank, a Bartlein barreled 300 Norma, and a LRI barreled 308. I shot and cleaned these rifles and put them back in the safe after wiping the bores with two clean patches. A few days after cleaning the bores, my house was tented and fumigated for termites using Sulfuryl fluoride gas which all termite fumigators used ahd have been using since the 1950s. The tent developed a leak in it and they had to fix the leak and pump in more gas, so the house was sealed up and gassed for about 5 days in the summer and it got very warm and very humid in the house during this time.

After the fumigation I put a borescope in my rifles to double check, and to my dismay, there was rust in the bores of the 3 previously mentioned rifles, which were also the only three rifles that had been recently cleaned. I had 1911s, ARs and bolt guns that had dirty bores that had no signs of rust. I patched out the bores with Eezox which removed the surface rust and hopefully stopped further corrosion. I've since shot all 3 of these rifles and they still shoot excellent to outstanding groups. So I don't think the corrosion caused a noticeable problem.

In the future, if a rifle is going to be in the safe for a while before the next shooting session, I'm going to finish cleaning with a patch of Eezox or Hoppe's just to make sure I don't have rusted bores in the future. As Frank said, BT is like 90% plus water so I can only conclude that the residual in the bore plus high temperature and humidity and fumigation gas caused the light rust that I found. I also had some small patches of rust on bare steel like on some tools, saw blades, reloading dies ( exterior only I found no rust on the insides of my reloading dies).
