Hunting & Fishing Experimenting w/ different calibers on deer (Graphic)

Over the last few weeks I've been experimenting using the same bullet but different calibers. These are southeastern deer - so already pretty small. Most are yearling bucks or does between 60-100lbs. Ranges were pretty close. All bullets are ELDX - .223, 6.5, 308, 300 WSM. All handloads.

.223 Neck Shot @ 130 yards 80gr ELDX (this was earlier this year)

308 178gr ELDX @ 40 yards & 160 yards

300 WSM 200gr ELDX @ 140y (Both pics are the same deer)

There was definitely no "Magic bullet". They all seemed to perform the same (223 was a neck shot). The sample size is limited so I plan on shooting more with the .223 in the lungs and trying to get similar POIs on deer to get better comparisons. It's hard to tell if a deer is slightly quartering away with thermal especially at 100+ yards.

At these ranges and with these deer, given any rifle, I'd stick to a .223 AR. It's got more rounds, less recoil, and my thermal is more of an AR platform friendly setup (NOX35) than a bolt gun. Neck shots drop them instantly whereas even with the big rifles in the lungs they still run between 25-50y.

I think the 300 WSM is unnecessary and not worth the cost of ammo or recoil. I didn't do an autopsy but they all ran the same distance before dying. If I had to use a bolt gun/bigger rifle caliber I'd stick to the 6.5 CM for the reduced recoil. 300 WSM would be a great longer range/Elk gun but on southeastern whitetail it just seems so excessive.

Remington M24 Scope mounting questions

Hey guys, first post here. I just purchased a GA Precision M24 off of gun broker (and a 0 MOA MARS rail from the same shop). The gun is still in transit and I just want to sanity check a few things in regards to scope mounting. First off, the MARS rail did not ship with screws which I think will be problematic. I'm hoping I can just have some screws made at a shop near me. Or maybe someone knows of a website that still has them? What size screws will I need? I've also seen a post where someone mentioned having to tap the action to accept the MARS rail screws and MARS rail. Is that accurate? I just refuse to believe they sent the army a rail that required modification on the action holes but anything is possible.

Next, I wanted to purchase a scope with similar(ish) size to the Leupold M3a. I ended up going with a Leupold Mark 5HD 3.6-18x44 (a bit bigger than the original M3a scope but I wanted some newer tech to go with it). Assuming I can make the MARS rail work, what height rings will be the lowest I can go? I will probably just wait for the gun to get in before I pick rings at my LGS but if someone has a similar setup I'd love to see it.

Lastly, If I cant immediately get the MARS rail mounted up, will a standard long action Remington 700 Scope base fit onto the m24 action? I'm assuming so but I haven't been able to confirm that on the internet. Thank you guys!

SOLD MPA/Curtis Axiom Barreled Action LH 6.5 Creed

SOLD Masterpiece arms/Curtis Custom Axiom short action left hand barreled action. 6.5 Creedmoor. Also comes with a Curtis action wrench to change the barrel.

This 22” barrel has exactly 2200 rounds through it. Group sizes and velocity never changed so not shot out yet. I am not really factoring the barrel into the price.

Action/bolt/barrel have some wear and marks. This has been used for PRS the last 2 years. I have had zero issues with the action. Unfortunately it has been sitting in the safe for a year and I just can’t afford to build another rifle out of it so hoping someone else will have use for it.

Expander ball resistance

On my hornady dies, using lapua 6.5 brass, I feel like im getting more resistance than I should when the expander ball is going in and leaving the case.

I got a set of my matchmaster dies and pulled that titanium coated expander ball off and put it on the hornady die and got the same result....

Got my 22 arc custom hornady dies and sized some hornady brass.... much smoother.

What should I be looking at here? Doesnt seem to be the expander ball when 2 of them give the same feeling.

SOLD ZCO 527 MPCT2

Selling a ZCO 5-27 with the MPCT2 reticle and a Spuhr SP-6002 mount. I have the box from what I recall, I will try to find it for the scope and possibly the mount too. The scope was on my 338L and fired 20 rounds with the scope on it. Have a TT for the rifle now. And this has been collecting dust for a while. It has a safe scuffs on the illumination rotating knob. The rest of the scope is in real good shape. Glass is clean the pic shows what appears to be a scratch, it’s just dust and lint. Scopes is in pristine condition otherwise.
