Entry Centerfire Caliber

Hi guys! I’ve been having an absolute blast shooting .22lr for a while now, but I’d like to step it up to the next level with my next rifle. I’d like to get into a caliber that I can reach out to about 500 yards and eventually work my way to 1,000. I don’t reload and don’t see myself having time to get into that for a few years at least. I don’t mind spending a good amount of money for a rifle and scope, but I’d really like a caliber that is affordable to shoot high quality factory ammo and preferably doesn’t burn up a barrel at low round counts.

I originally thought 5.56 / .223 because I have a couple nice AR’s and it’s nice to have a cartridge that’ll work in multiple rifles, but good 5.56 ammo doesn’t seem to really be cheaper than good .308 factory ammo or even much cheaper than good 6.5 CM! Also, something that would work well for deer and elk would be a plus!

Thanks for the advice!!!

Ever heard of LT COL Chris Schillings? What an embarrassment….

Last fall, while accompanying her 7-year-old daughter to “Math Night” at her elementary school in North Hanover Township, New Jersey, Angela Reading was shocked to see what was on the school bulletin board in the hallway. It was filled with posters drawn by students and touting LGBTQ identities like androgyne, nonbinary, lesbian, gender-fluid, genderqueer, bi[sexual], pansexual, and polysexual.

When her daughter asked her what “polysexual” meant, Angela decided to speak up. That night she posted on her personal Facebook page her objections to the sexual and gender content at school. She said that elementary-age students are too young for such subjects. She wrote that the content was “perverse and should be illegal.”

Apparently, because families at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, a nearby military base, had children at the school, a base officer, Lt. Col. Christopher Schilling, posted on Facebook that Angela’s comments “caused safety concerns for many families.”

Schilling contacted the local police chief who then asked Angela to remove her Facebook post. Angela said the police chief told her, “I don’t want Homeland Security coming after me. Take the post down.”

Then Schilling posted that he was making sure federal security forces were “working with multiple state and local law enforcement agencies to monitor the situation to ensure the continued safety of the entire community.” He wasn’t exaggerating. Angela said she learned later that Schilling had reported her to the Department of Homeland Security.

Things quickly spiraled out of control. Angela said she and her husband were ostracized and that she was characterized as a “terrorist” and “right-wing extremist.” They were both forced to resign as school board members. They had to pull their children out of public school.

She also told the New York Post that she became the subject of multiple law enforcement investigations.

Finally, Angela and her husband had had enough and contacted the Thomas More Society, a Chicago-based, not-for-profit, public interest law firm. The group is now representing them in a federal lawsuit that was filed in March.

Christopher Ferrara, the couple’s attorney, summarized the chilling nature of the lawsuit.

The core of this case is that a local police chief, acting at the request of military personnel at the Joint Base, obtained the removal of Mrs. Reading’s Facebook post, and then attempted to have other posts removed, after which Joint Base personnel engaged in a coordinated referral of Mrs. Reading to various law enforcement and security agencies. … This was accompanied by a campaign to portray Mrs. Reading as a security threat such that, as Defendant Schilling put it, “I think we need to keep the pressure on until her [Mrs. Reading’s] disruptive and dangerous actions cease…” – meaning, her fully protected speech with which the Defendants disagreed. This case exemplifies the weaponization of government against conservative parents. …

Current state of cheap scopes $100-$200 (specifically in Canada)

My brother lives in Canada and is looking at buying his first rifle, will be for medium/big game at close range only (inside of 150yards).

I'd recommend something like the Swampfox 3x prism (with the wide FOV), he liked that but I think it's a little hard to find in Canada and/or expensive.
He is now asking me about cheap scopes like the Bushnell Banner 3-9 and no name Chinese shit, which would bee nice if he didn't waste his money on.

Is there a go to brand or optic type for cheap optics these days?
I haven't looked at cheap beginner scopes for many years now, so have no idea what's any good.
It'll be obvious things like the simpler the better but is there anything that clearly stands out as being best value and not a POS?

SOLD Impact SA Benchmark CF GAP 6.5 SAUM

Giving prices if sold separate but like to sell as a package but willing to separate if barrels sell first.

Impact SA 737r with magnum bolt and Trigger tech special, black flat shoe.
$1250

22 inch Benchmark CF barrel chambered by Blue Mountain Precision. Purchased off the hide used from a member who said he put approximately 200 rounds through it for deer management. I then put another 200 factory Prime rounds through it. It shot sub moa for me with the factory Prime ammo which is about as good as I ever shoot. It would probably be a lot more accurate with a better shooter and handless.
$750

A Second 6.5 Saum 18 inch Bartlein Rem 700 Sendero/varmint contour #13 I believe but check with me if you want exact measurements. Barrel weighs 3 lbs even. I purchased it new off gunbroker from a gunshot that had it spun up by GA Precision for a lightweight hunting build that they never did. I put approximately 200 rounds through it of Prime factory ammo and it shot sub moa like the Benchmark.
$675

Action wrench

Brand new 308 bolt assembly from Altus
$435

Everything as one package is $2500 shipped to your ffl from individual (me).

Happy to send additional pics, give measurements, weights, etc.

Will only split up if barrels sell first.

Usps money order, Guntab (you pay fees), ppff, venmo, check to members with good feedback.

New Jug Syndrome

I have a load that I use for about 300 shots already, measuring speed with garmin chrono almost of each shot.
Got stable 2608 average speed in temperature condition I am in.

This time speed went down to 2575 average, about 32 lower for 10 rounds I shot and measure.

Did exactly same brass preparations, I would consider no changes there as it's works for me for the rifle stable for last 6 months for sure.
The only difference was a new jug of powder I just opened.

Powder is StaBALL Match

Someone told me that he have it with Retumbo, with a new jug he just opened he had lower speed for the first batch of rounds.
And than even loads loaded next day don't have it, speed for the next batch of rounds comeback to normal.

And I realized that I seen it couple weeks ago with StaBALL HD, I am doing load development and for a new jug just opened and loaded cartridges I seen speed is lower, but wasn't sure if it's me did something wrong.

Does anyone having the same issues before? Maybe it's known issues I just not be aware of?
Looks like it's makes sense to open a new jug day before I gonna do powder measuring and pouring and bullet seating.
