Here's a likely short thread, are there any politicians that you knew/kinda liked and wish they would have gone further in their career aspirations?

Being the contrarian that I am- I figured I'd ask an arguably inverse type of question than that's found most often in the Pit.

Instead of lamenting on how lousy our elected officials are (not that I disagree with that sentiment either), just wanted to ask have you known/met/ a politician that for whatever reason just didn't go far enough? Someone you thought had the chops for something bigger but for one reason or another stopped (maybe because they just had the good sense to get out of the game)?

I think there's a few I can think of that I thought should have aspired to running to higher offices but likely were smart enough to not do so.

One of the names that comes to my mind, and in full disclosure I do have a small bias, but from PA, I'd honestly have to say Tom Ridge.

To explain my bias- I briefly knew one of his children and also was able to meet the man several times. To my memory/recollection, that aside, I felt like he did a lot of good things as his time as Governor in PA. My memory may be overly rosy with who we had as Governor since his time (not even bothering to mention their names).

That said, I always thought he was capable of achieving further notoriety and would have done so had it not been for 9/11 and his appointment to the newly formed Homeland Security Department that has been a... shall I say rightfully controversial department (at least in my opinion) ever since it came into existence.

Don't suppose anyone else can think of a politician they hoped would go further and had they done so would have left a more positive impact on government than the folks that advanced instead?

Recs for 8 yr old first hunting rifle????.

So, the boy wants to hunt with me this year and I shoot lefty, he's right handed. (Though I'm questioning his eye dominance)

The only RH hunting rifle I have left is a .270 feather weight Win mod 70. Love the rifle but not a gun I really want him shooting just yet, it kicks pretty hard.

Id like to get him his own rifle but I really don't know how much he's going to be into it, so I'm not forking out custom action money just yet. He'd rather play ball than anything else and has always been that way. He's 8 years old and about 55 lbs., so I'd really like it to be a 6cm (I already load and shoot a lot of this), but I suppose a 6.5cm would work too (I load this too a lot).

Any recs for a solid rifle that will be good for hunting but could also reach out there when he goes to the range with me? I'm guessing Tikka will be a common rec but is there anything I could get that wouldn't suck for say $500-$700?? I havent bought a factory rifle in quite a while, so I am pretty apprehensive about it, and would love some info. Used is also on the table very much but its hard to find a hunting type (not super heavy) 6cm. I have a scope I can put on it. I'd hate to get him a rifle that has a crappy trigger and isn't accurate but I also don't want to fork out big bucks for this.

Thanks

FN SPR questions

Hello all. I recently purchased an FN SPR and I have a few questions I hope can get answered. My gun seems to be an early A5M but I’m not sure. It was the A5 McMillan stock along with the sling mounting points and bipod. It has a 24” fluted barrel with a 1:12 twist. BUT it doesn’t have a shroud around the magazine well like most pictures of the A5M do.

Secondly, I shot it for the first time today and I’m experiencing some odd resistance in the action. After I fire, I go to rotate the bolt before pulling back but at the top of the rotational range of motion it requires a lot more effort. A few times it required a slight ‘slam’. I wanted to see if anyone else had this issue. There is something on the action that looks out of place, I included a picture of it. Any help/info would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Optics Burris XTR III 3.3-18x50 illuminated SCR MOA

I have a like new Burris XTR iii 3.3-18x50 illuminated SCR MOA model 201203 up for sale. I mounted the scope in a pair of ARC m brace rings but the scope has never seen the field or been on a rifle that has been fired. No scratches or dings. It’s just a little heavy for my application.

Will come in original box, with original documentation and included extra turret.

I don’t have any previous posts or sales but I’m willing to verify I’m legit however you see fit.

$750 shipped.

Barrel Break In

Breaking in a new barrel. How important is it to get every bit of carbon out?

The manufacturer recommends cleaning after every round for the first 5 shots, then every 5 rounds for the next 15. That’s 8 cleanings.

I can get the copper out with solvent and patches, a nylon brush if need be. Getting 100 percent of the carbon out requires an abrasive cleaner like iosso. Not a fan of doing that 8 times in one day on a new barrel.

Barrel came lapped from the manufacturer. They test fired 4 shots for a .35moa group. Photos below show cleaning after those 4 shots. Method was 2 rounds of soak and clean with wipe-out.

2/3 down the barrel (8 inches from the muzzle) Shiny clean - no copper

1/3 down (8 inches from the chamber) no copper, but a thin layer of carbon.

If I want the whole barrel shiny, I’ll need iosso, which I’d normally use every 50-100 rounds, not 8 times for 20 rounds. Seems like a lot.

Rattlecan camo job, but well done. Glass is clear and bright with no marks and illumination works as it should.

AEM5K - anyone have one yet?

Not clone correct but has anyone gotten their hands on the AEM5K yet? I think it might fit the RECCE a little better. Would be 2” shorter with the K can. I kicked around doing the AEM2 or 3 for the RECCe build but I didn’t want another 14.5” so I kept the 2.5” spacing. This can seems to fill the niche I was looking for.

Curious how it performs. I expect a little louder but with less baffles, I wonder how gassy it is compared to the full size can and what the time is like.
