1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

only 1 company does this, and they have done pistols in the past, this was the 1st full rifle they have done, they are the OEM nitrider/melonite for S&W, Spikes, KRISS, Robinson and a few others...

"Tan" Nitide.. can ONLY be done on SS, same corrosion resistance and same lubricity as black... but not as hard.Normal barrel SS is 35 to 45RC stock, black will get it to 70RC, the tan is in the 50's

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

I thought tan was from not going hot enough.

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

I am very intrigued with the nitriding, a buddy had his rifle done and loves it, says his gun puts out a little more velocity and groups .19 at 100 yds (hunting rifle )So I am curious about the tan as his is the black.

How does your rifle shoot now compared to pre-nitride?

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

The TAN actually offers more corrosion resistance. It also does not wear as well as the black. Just scratches way to easy compared to the black in my opinion.

At times it looks more green than Tan. It's cool but just not as good as the black.

I have had a few pistols and AR barrels done in Tan and many, many more done in black.

I will not build another rifle without having it nitrided. The benefits are incredible!

i have a 260 and a few AR's in black i did, all shot as good or better. the only barrel i F'ed up was when i had a chrome lined barrel nitrided, that removed the chrome and it became a 3 to 4 moa gun

...

in this batch, i had this savage done, and a 3 grove poly black hole weaponry barrel and a stag heavy varmit

in the past, i have had 6 or 7 other barrels done, no issues...

H&M really knows what they are doing, and if you want a few done at a time, you can get a few done for the same price as 1...

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

BIG NEWS.. on price...

i JUST called him, he is going to be sending me a all new price list, WAY better pricing now, after shot show, they are now doing work for barret and a few other big names..

the pricing will break down from a single pistol mag to fully barreled action and bolts and anything in between.. ill let u know when he sends it

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

I am very interested in this process for a new build. Sounds really good, and well worth it!!

DK

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

Great news on the price list versus a single lot price. I'm sending my barreled action up when I get her back from the smith.

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

Looks great. Interested in seeing the prices when you get them

he said a single AR barrel, would be like 50$ or so... just so u have a "idea".. ill post the list as soon as i get it..

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

Thanks Ring, keep us me posted cause I am definitely in for some nitride work!

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

Looks good. I'm a big fan of the 12 series actions.

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

that looks really sharp!!

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

I always liked the color that the rifle came out to be. And I enjoy that "color change" look to it like you mentioned.

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

WOuld the barrel and action have to be separated to have this done? Or just strip all the moving parts off the action?

Thanks.

Dave

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

^^^ pretty sure they are separated.... one of the reasons I keep holding off on having mine cerakoted.

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

Any update on their pricing yet?

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

This looks very promising. I look forward to the pricing update.

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

i am really interested in the tan nitride. I really like the look but have some questions. I called H&M today and didnt get the warm and fuzzies about the process. According to them the process is for "color" purpose alone and will not provide any more protection.
What do you guys think?

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

Not correct, while it is not as hard as the black it is still harder then without and it's still provides corrosion protection

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

That is just cool. I saw what I think was your writeup on the process on another site and I am considering having some pistol barrels and my 5R Rem done. Thanks again for sharing!

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

im going to call again today, he has been hard to contact since he was at shot and the NRA thing...

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

Ok, just got off the phone...

the owner of the company is not super interested in a "price list" only for the fact, he dont want to do 100's of 1 piece orders... so the owner still wants the "lot" charge of 200 min.
But Shade, the General Manager wants the extra business..

So.. This is what he told me to tell you guys...

Min lot charge is 200$

A FULL gun, including ALL the little parts, "trigger parts, bolt parts, barrel, gas tube, gas block, 1 mag".. Pistol or rifle, 200$

Just a barreled action, no bolt, 100

AR barrel ONLY 50$

Pistol slide 20$

He mentioned mags, but i forgot the $$$

Now this is the biggie.. he said ANY of you guys that call, if you mention that you read this on this forum, and tell him "Russ" ..Me.. sent you, he is more then happy to swing a better deal, "cough.. lower lot charge..chough.."
wink.gif
you will need to contact him to discuss that..
If you are a gunsmith, and want to send regular work to him, let him know, he will be glad to work with you..

Also a reminder, ALL parts need to be dissembled BEFORE you send it in, barreled actions DONOT NEED to be taking apart, but not a bad idea if you can.

ZERO parts with springs can be sent in, the heat will destroy the spring..

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

That is great news. I will be calling them to do my entire 6XC build that will be completed in June. This is great stuff.

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

Shade is good people. I had a rifle done by H&M not long ago, and Shade was very helpful over the phone. The rifle turned out great and I will definitely have my next rifle nitrided. I can try to gouge my rifle with the tip of a sharp knife blade and it doesn't leave a mark. Pretty neat stuff.

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

I hope these guys (H&M) are good with small parts...

...I just sent them 4 barrels, 4 brakes, 4 thread protectors, an FN SPR action, a Savage action, and a gallon ziplock full of bolt parts and odds/ends...

Looking forward to getting it ALL back!

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

Hope everything turns out good for ya turbo. Seems they may have ruined the Bartlein I had fitted to my Surgeon. Still waiting on a response...

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

Hope it works out for you. I sent them a Tikka with a Bartlein screwed into it. Also sent the disassembled bolt and several small parts, screws, etc. Got everything back lightly coated in oil and individually wrapped. One thing I will say is that whatever they use to blast/clean the parts ends up in the small crevices. I had to take a drill bit to the ejector hole to get the crud out of it. No big deal, but took me a few minutes to figure out why the spring wouldn't go all the way back in.
-Dan

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

Yep, I found the crud in the ejector hole last night. It just sucks to have $900 into a barrel with 23 rounds down it that nothing will thread onto the muzzle after it was treated.

Curious to hear more about this... Your muzzle device fit prior to the treatment, but not after?

I'm a bit nervous with my Bartlein as well. I sent 2 button rifled CBI Savage Prefits, an OEM Savage barrel, and the Bartlein for my SPR 284. I'm about $750 into that barrel at this point, with blank cost, shipping costs, fitting costs and fluting costs. Sure would be a shame to use it as a tomato stake.

Re: 1 of a kind.... just had a rifle "tan" nitrided..

Yep, thread protector, RAD brake and TBAC 30P-1 all fit before treatment. Melonited RAD brake, previous thread protector and another untreated RAD brake all threaded a few turns then stopped at a ‘wall.’

The barrel was treated with the RAD brake installed. I had instructions and marked everything with permanent marker, so there hopefully wouldn’t be any screw ups. They didn’t follow my instructions, and the brake was treated just as I sent it in. The brake is cut parallel to the bore along the bottom and uses a cross bolt to index. The melonite ‘treated’ the area where the brake was cut and on both ends of the threads.

Went to remove the brake from barrel with another Hide member, and we almost had to put it in a barrel vise. We used a pair of channel locks with rubber coating on the handle as a ‘dowel’ to spin the brake off after the cross bolt was removed. The brake cut through the rubber, and deformed the ports on the brake. Again, the brake was melonited, so how hard was it? By the time we got the brake off, the muzzle threads looked like crap.

Spoke with 2 different people at H&M; still waiting on a response.
