I just got my .300 build back. 30" broughton with a 2" shrewd brake. Broke it in yesterday and was impressed but not ecstatic.
Interesting thing ; rws brass showed op more than rp or federal brass. Went back and looked and the case capacity of RWS is very limited. Should I just sell the brass and go back to win and rp.?

Moving on... R22 showed velocity spikes out of this world
H100 gave me 110 to 120 fps gain and a lot more accurate.

I just loaded 230 Berger hybrids with 76.2 retumbo and rp brass. Going to shoot 5 and see if they "shoot" w/o chrony. Does all this make sense to you fellows

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

Yes u need real slow burning powder.. and a very good primer.. like the 215m.. h1000... rl33.. and retumbo work well..

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

Shot 76.2 with the 230 and retumbo. Fgm215m. Rp brass. 2900 fps and 3/4 moa. Still gotta tweak it. But I ran some at different lengths and seems they prefer a jump. Rws brass was intended but the case capacity.... Not there. I'll trade 240 pieces of rws new brass for..... Make an offer(brass)

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

Thats damn good velocity for the 230... that will get u out their a long way.. and will have good knock down power aswell

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

really?? that far?? I would say you have a winner their!!

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

According to ballistic ae that's the #'s. Ran it out to 520 and it was dead on. Using the g7 bc. It's strange though. Even with factory ammo (brake in) I was getting ejector marks. May have to pit a new ejector and extractor on. Hope not

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

Aimsmall55,
Just wondering if you have done anymore testing and what your accuracy and velocities are like.
I'm waiting on a 300 win mag barrel now and I'm hoping to shoot the 215 or 230 bergers in it. Please keep us posted.
Thanks, Jon

Jon, I am actually on my way to Lo. right now to get the throat reamed a bit deeper. I have tested and tested and it won't shoot to my standards. Velocity is incredible. Got the 215 to 3,000 fps no problem. I just need more free bore. After he throats it again me and Don (gun builder ) are gonna sit down and work up a load. He builds verrrry nice builds and is a perfectionist so he's not gonna let me leave until its shooting 1/4 moa

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

I think I'm gonna play with imr7828ssc once we get it shooting. Sierra seems to think its good for the big boys. That doesn't pan out I got a lot more powders to play with

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

Keep after it and good luck. Let us know how it turns out.
Thanks, Jon

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

Will do. I am going to his place at 9:30 Tom morning. He promised before I left he'd give me the accuracy. Great thing is we literally work on the rifle, load and shoot 30 feet apart. Shooting on a bench he built in his shop to 300 yards. So I'm in town for personal reasons but my wife's SUV looks like I'm going to set up at a gun show. Lol. She's not too thrilled but I can't blame her. She got popped in the eye brow by my .280 and hasn't shot nor been a fan of it ever since....

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

I am attempting to find a good load for my 20" 300 WM. to use with my can, so I loaded up some Berger 230 gr hybrid target w/ varying levels of Ramshot magnum to see how this combo works. I am very impressed by this combination and hope to see better results.

Elevation: 5791
Temp: 51'F
Started at 65.0 and increased by .2 grains until max load at 74.0
At max this load showed no signs of pressure and is only 97% full.

65.0 was in the high 2200's and gradually climbed to 2480's at 70.8 gr.
this load really started to impress after 72.0 gr. which was 2540.

I have since loaded more ( three of each) starting at 72.0 grains ending at 74.8 grains. I will head to the range very soon and further test .
I MUST ADVISE THIS LOAD IS WAY OVER MAX !!

I will post more data after I shoot this next string.

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

Well. I finally got Mr. Don to work on my .300 today. It took him kicking and screaming but he FINALLY cut me another 140/1000's worth of freebore. Ha, it's funny, he knows I want to shoot the big bullets. So the first thing he does is load up some 168 vlds with imr4350. 4 shots. One hole. Then he loaded 168 amax. 4 shots 2 holes touching. Finally I talked him into the 208 amax but he wouldn't change powder. Still 8 shots were 1/2 moa. So basically he wanted to make sure the build wasn't flawed. Now I have enough freebore to load a 210 vld to 3.650" meaning the 215's and 230's will have plenty room and the case will have more than enough powder capacity. Couldn't be happier. Can't wait to load up the 230's and shoot. Before all this I was shooting the 230's at 2900. But not grouping. Now maybe it'll all come together. Will keep you guys posted

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

3.017" to ogive to hit the lands. Oal of 3.730. With 215 hybrid. If this isn't enough room than there isn't ever going to be enough.

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

I had very good results with the 230 Bergers using 71 gr 4831SC, Fed 215M primers in Fed brass, jumping .020"

2850 fps out of 26" 1:10 bbl and consistent <.5 MOA, occasionally better.

I have gone back to 208 AMAX for two reasons - expense (those Bergers are almost 2X) and the extra recoil made it harder to stay on target for follow up shots.

Having said that, the ballistics of the Berger are really superior (.368 G-7 vs .324 G-7 for the 208)

YMMV

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

Ok guys. I got it nailed down pat. Started out with IMR 7828 ssc. Very good groups but velocity was at 2700. Then I started thinking Retumbo. Loaded up 74.5 grains at 3.712" coal. This is five at 120 yards. Average speed was 2865 with an Es of 18 fps.

The flyer was what I was aiming at. Pretty damn good I'd say. No more wasting bullets. This is my load

Looks like you have a keeper! Thanks for sharing your info.

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

Chrono#'s were way off. I am truly in awe right now. I'm at the range cooling my barrel. Real world #'s don't lie. 3014 fps. Set up my usual 520 yards and plugged in the #'s and doped to to 8.4 moa. Barely hit the plate. High. I clicked down to 7.9 moa and pow right on the 3" circle. So with a 107 yard zero I'm at 22.05 at 1k. Also at muzzle I have 4640 ft /lb energy with lethality out to 1480 yards (1000 ft/lb) and super sonic with the g7 out to 1820 yards. That's at 306 asl. 60 degrees 41 percent humidity.
I didn't beleive it at first so I shot at 300 then 400 to double check. Dead on.
I'm in awe

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

Competitive edge will be getting a phone call about the ced m2.

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

3014 fps with the 215's or 230's ? Did you ever try loading some of the RWS brass?

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

Very nice shooting and that is serious speed for 230's.

Appreciate it. I'm scared to run the 208's bc it'll burn my barrel out so fast. I've got some other rifles from Gap and another .300 5r milspec. I think I will play with those and save these loads for a really looonnngggg range day. What gets me is I'm 2 grains under max. Broughton brags on their website about "higher velocities and lower pressure " but Jeez..... 3015 fps. Guess they wanna keep you coming back for more ...... Quick like

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

Aimsmall, those are some truly awesome numbers! I'm heading to the range in the am to further test my loads with Ramshot Magnum and the 230's. I will post the results afterword

Re: 230 hybrid. .300win mag.. Powder??

Good shooting. Please post what you get. Interested to see your #'s

Shot at 900 yards yesterday with 15-20 mph shifting winds. It was tough. But I I had mostly a head wind at my 12:30 to 1o'clock. I knew two things ; would push bullet down and left 2; this was a good time to find out how the bullet performed in harsh wind conditions. Doped my scope and after 2 shots the target (ar500 2x2) fell. Was popping it pretty hard.

My dope was 18.7 moa with no wind dope although I did hold a bit high and right. It was in a wide open fish farm so there was no chance of getting wind relief. But I would pop the plate 2 to 3 times at most and it would fall over.

Can you ask your gunsmith before extending your freebore, what reamer was used in the original rifle construction? Was it the PTG (Pacific Gauge and Tool) 300 Win Mag Match Reamer?
Thanks,
Rich

We kind of had a "falling out" and I don't talk to him anymore. Although he didn't use a match reamer from what I remember. I gave him dummy round and he cut it close but not exact. Still it worked out great. I gave up on the hybrids for a while and started shooting the OTM s. but today I picked up where i lefy off and did a little load development and found my near perfect seating depth. I was jamming the hell out of them before, but I backed off 40/1000's.. Probably 25/1000's off lands and they shot really good. Going to load up some more tonight and shoot 925 yards tommorrow. Load is 75.3 Retumbo. Also I noticed my groups got smaller with cci250's. I was previously running fgm215.
Here is 3 at 110 yards. (Didn't feel the need to shoot 5)
