Member Link Up Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

Obviously most of us in this thread are from the area around the sound...from Olympia to anacortes. With a couple of rare exceptions, most of the shooting over 600 yards require a 3 hour drive east. There are a number of good spots outside of ellensburg, and between this, and the other Washington thread, you will find 99.5% of the matches around here.

There are monthly practical rifle matches on the third Saturday of the month at upper in squally sportsman's club outside eatonville, wa ( about 45 minutes east southeast of Tacoma. The matches there go out to 545 yards and are great practice using field positions and other positions and scenarios that few of us use (but we all should) during our range practice sessions.

Match fee is $20, and start at 10am. All first time shooters have to attend a mandatory one time orientation, and safety briefing that starts at 08:30am on match day. Lots of fun, relaxed atmosphere, and great practice for bolt gun, or semi auto. Match winner seldom has much to do with wether you shoot a bolt gun or semi auto, although they do shoot in different classes.

If you want to get onto the groups mailing list, send a short email letting them know you would like to be added to the mailing list to [email protected]. Then you will get course descriptions,a d all the other relevant info.

And above all WELCOME to both you and josh!!

Hi from Seattle, Im new on here and excited to get out and do some shooting. For the folks near the Seattle area check out the SPAA (Seattle Police Athletic Association) http://www.spaarange.com Not a very long distance range a great orginization run and owned by SPD. You can only shoot out to 200 but its good for setting up a rifle. The best part is the store prices I think its cost plus 5 or 10 percent on everything, SPAA is a non profit, you have to be a member to shoot and buy but the $130 bucks is worth it. I covered my membership with my first rifle purchase there.

Anyway, Have a good night and hopefully I can get out and shoot next month at UNSC

Semper Fi,

Hi Nick - PM me as I might have some leads for you.

Anybody heading out to Ellensburg? I live in North Bend and can meet up with anybody looking to head over.

Well while I find a job I decided to try-out for the CK Volunteer Firefighters. Give me something healthy to do and get some EMT training among other things. Besides, I could use the exercise lol...

The April 2013 practical rifle match at Upper Nisqually sportsman's club has been moved from the third Saturday (20th) to the first Saturday (6th) of April. The 4H group aty the club is having a state wide gathering and wanted to know if we could move our match, so we agreed.

The club's board of directors will be deciding on the direction of the practical rifle group following the April match. The Board initially agreed on a series of test matches to evaluate interest and participation before they thought about making the matches a year long regular activity. Following the April match, the board will let us know if the group will continue getting the range reservation, or if there will be a change. I will post information as soon as it becomes available.

So I'm not sure WTF is goign on, but "Sportsman's Warehouse" which became "Wholesale Sports" is apparently changing back to "Sportsman's Warehouse". Just a heads up to the locals here in Silverdale area that the Silverdale location is closed while they transition. I'm all kinds of excited since I have a gift card to "Wholesale Sports" from my in-laws which will be useless unless I drive out to Federal Way provided that location isn't reverting back as well.

Wholesale Sports is out, and SPortsmans is back in, but not all stores are being reopened. I think it was 80% of the stores were being shut down for good. Federal Way, Burlington, and a few others were on the list to cut and not every touch. SO up here all we have is Cabelas now since Joes and Sportsmans/Wholesale have both gone bye bye

Good news I hope. I remember an instant price rise when Wholesale bought out Sportsmans a few years back. Fingers crossed that it goes back that way. It always seemed that items were marked up 10% or more under Wholesale.

Just fucking great... so now I have a useless gift card.

We had a good match out at UNSC today, the weather decided to cooperate with us and hold off the rain until we were finished with the match. I had a lot of fun running my first match and I want to thank everyone who attended today for making everything go smoothly (except my screw up on stage 3's round count!). A few of the stages were much more difficult than I thought they would be, but everyone had fun and shot well.

There was a possible 42 points in 480 seconds.

Here are the scores, times and type of rilfe:

1st: AtOne- 25 points 405.72 seconds - bolt
2nd: blurry6- 24 points 425.68 seconds - bolt
3rd: Silverbullet- 23 points 419.49 seconds - bolt
4th: Shellback77- 22 points 436.04 seconds - bolt
5th:KevinD- 11 points 282.58 seconds - semi
6th: Kris- 11 points 420.88 seconds - bolt
7th: Vipers28- 7 points 420.72 seconds - bolt

I want to remind everyone that the next match is going to be on April 6th at UNSC. I will post a reminder again before the next match as well as the course of fire.

Great match and Kevin did an awesome job setting up and running things smooth as silk ! Thanks for filling in.
Weather was great and the COF was plenty challenging enough. Offhand is always difficult but a good thing to practice without a doubt especially when those points counted for 2 for each hit.

Mike and I spent part of time at work last week building the evil twin barricades and got to give them a run though today. More than pleased with how they turned out and they'll give quite a few options for setting up when we're finished with them.

Here's Blurry in action

They can be used separate or together. Here's some optional set ups which will include turning the whole thing into a staircase down the road and a possible rooftop too. Planning on using removable dowels to join them up for easy set up.

Great job today running the match, Kevin! Everything went off without a hitch and there was just the right amount of steel on the COF as not to be overly confusing,... Mike & Eric's barricades were the hit of the day! While today we were able to utilize any portion of these barricades during the supported stages, there are some dastardly 'holes' i.e. slanted, small and at a height that will give anyone trying to use them fits(!). I see stages in the future with mandatory use of certain holes,... They're DEVIOUS! Again, great job Kevin, and it's was great to see everyone again. See you next time!

Also, Kevin didn't mention it, but the next match on April 6th, they're going to allow us to keep the steel on the range 'til 4pm, so anyone wanting to stay after the match and get some trigger-time on various pieces of steel going out to 540-yards is welcome. Come on out! $20.00 and you get to shoot at steel, meet great people, see cool gear, and talk rifles, reloading, weather,...etc. It's fun! Hope to see you all there!

Ry

The match today ran like a fine Swiss watch. Challenging stages, and a great group of guys. I enjoy my time spent with you all. Thank you to Kevin for taking the bull by the horns. The new barricades were very nice, if I ever need some woodworking, I know where to go! J

Atone,
The barricade prop is fabulous!! I can think of so many devilish stages to design with that. Between Nick's rooftop/barricade, and your barricade we can do some very creative things. I will be in touch with you...

Show off... lol... In my own defense, mine was designed for minimal space in transport and with spare materials around the house...

Yours works great too Nick, The difference between Mike and I is that our spare materials lying around is much larger to pick from seeing as we do this everyday lol.
Really only spent $43 for the 1/4" plywood, everything else we had.

The motivation for building it was to have something to practice dry firing with in unconventional positions so that at matches when we hit the dog house, pallets or any other odd shooting positions we'll know what will work and what we have to do to get it done...hopefully ;)

A quick big THANKS ! to Russ at PSC for checking out this thread and working for us precision shooters in the background to help move us along too. Much appreciated !

On another note anyone that's not going to the match on the other side of the mountains on April 6th be sure to come out to the Nisqually match, Not only because it should be a good one but to help show support for what Unknown, Nick and now Kevin have all worked so hard for to give us a place to actually get some field competition practice on our side of the mountains.
If you haven't come out yet, DO IT ! Its a low key fun friendly day of shooting that will challenge your abilities. Sometimes I read the COF and think its going to be easy, Usually by the end of the day I'm proven wrong each time and know what I need to work on for the next one.

AtOne, I didn't know that it was possible but I have some serious barricade-envy going on right now. Nice work!

Dang, I just gave up the search for a used on and bought a new kit. That will save someone a little bit of $$ after ordering media.

If you plan on using walnut shell, or corncob media, it is cheapest when bought at industrial safety supply houses. My last buy was about 50pounds for $25 or so. It came in a bag the size of one of those huge bags of dog food.

On another note, I just discovered that since the format changeover here, I had to reset all sorts of stuff in my profile area. No wonder my messages were all screwed up. Hopefully I have figured the system out.....at least until, the next change here.

Passing the word that Nick is taking a mini-vacation from the Hide. If you need to reach him before the 28th give him a call or PM me for his number.

I'm back from my Admin sponsored weeks vacation. I also found out I owe a metric ass ton in taxes, so I'll likely have some gear for sale here shortly. I'd say when it rains it pours, but at this point I think I just saw Noah float by in an Arc...

Here is the tentative course of fire for the April Practical Rifle Match at UNSC. Next match starts at 10am on April 6th at UNSC in Eatonville. First time shooters must attend a one time orientation/safety brief at 0900, all previous shooters must sign in no later than 1000. We will also be having a kind of open house after the match and we will be leaving the targets up on the range until 4pm so anyone that wants to stop by and check out what we do and try out shooting some steel targets are more than welcome. Any questions contact myself, Unknown or _Nick_. Hope to see some of you there,

Kevin

STAGE 1: OFFHAND AND KNEELING
9 shots/120 seconds 12 points possible (offhand shots are worth 2 points each)

Begin fully loaded at low ready. After start signal fire 1 round only on T1, T2, T3, from offhand unsupported. Then transition to kneeling position and shoot T1, T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6.

STAGE 2: PRONE, NO BIPOD
14 rounds/120 seconds 14 points possible

Magazines may be loaded with no more than 7 rounds in each.
There will be two sandbags stacked on top of each other with the shooter's rifle resting nearby with the action empty and locked open, and a chamber flag inserted. The muzzle should not be pointing at the shooter who will begin about 40 yards downrange. Following the first signal, shooter will have 30 seconds to move to the shooting area near the sandbags, load, make ready to fire, and wait for the start signal from the timer. (BIPODS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THIS STAGE).
After the start signal, shooter will fire one shot only on T1 through T7. After the rifle is locked open, the shooter will reload and again engage T1 through T7 with one round only, but may use the sandbags for support.

STAGE 3: ROOFTOP/BARRICADE 17 rounds/120 seconds 17 points possible

Begin with 7 rounds in the rifle, and magazine/s loaded with no more than 10 rounds

The rooftop will be set at a very shallow slope for this stage. Shooter will begin in an over watch position on the rooftop. After the start signal, shooter will engage T1 through T7 with one round only on each target. When rifle has locked open, shooter will move to the barricade and reload with up to 10 rounds. At the barricade, the shooter will shoot through the enclosed shooting ports only. Shooter may not fire more than two rounds through any port. Shooter will use his 10 rounds to engage T1 through T10 using one round per target in an attempt to connect with the targets in that order. If a target is missed, shooter must move onto the next target as there will be only one attempt/round per target to strike the designated target.

STAGE 4: Rise and shine: 10 shots/120 seconds 10 points possible

Begin lying down on the cot with the rifle in the case next to the cot. After the start signal move to the barricade, load rifle and engage targets. (SHOOTER MAY NOT SHOOT PRONE AROUND THE ENDS OF THE BARRICADE) Engage T1 through T10 in that order from various positions at the barricade.
While at the barricade, shooter may fire no more than 2 rounds from any position, or may only hit one target from any position. After firing 2 rounds, or hitting a target, shooter must change to another position. Shooter may only fire two rounds at any target before being required to move on. After 2 rounds, both the position used, and the target attempted are "out of play".

Anyone locally have or know anyone with a JAE 700 chassis? I haven't put my hands on one and I'd like to check it out.

Hey guys,
I still have room in the entiat match this sat if anyone wants to go. Direction are uploaded on shww or text me @ 3609138607
Chris

This looks like a ton of fun. I am going to do my best to make it out to the April 6th shoot, I may not shoot as my new optic is backordered but maybe I can bang out the safety brief and do some meet and greet.

Fedcop,
Not sure if you are referring to the entity match, or the upper nisqually match...there will be an event after the Nisqually match where folks can try out shooting the steel to see if the want to get more involved, so if you are thinking about Nisqually, bring your rifle. the steel will stay on the range until around 4PM on Saturday April 6th.

I was thinking the one near Eatonville, is that the upper Nisqually match? I probably wont have my new rifle but i may bring just my hunting rifle for fun. Vortex (were i ordered my optic) is currently back ordered and they estimate i should have it by the end of this month early next month.

Looking for some help guys....I am taking the Precision Long Range course on April 26th – 28st in Colville. The course requires 300 rounds of ammo that I have found EXTREMELY difficult to obtain components to build. It turns out I have just enough brass. Half of my brass supply is very heavily used and in need of retirement (fired approximately 10 times, but carefully annealed each firing). I was able to locate some new 7mm WSM brass which has been literally impossible to find now that any new Winchester 7mm WSM is made of "unobtanium."

I'm set with primers and lead, but I am short on powder. I could use one more pound of 4831SC, but I have had little luck out finding it. That place up in Cle Ellum has a pound, but that seems almost ridiculous to make that drive for such a small amount. If any of you have a pound that you would be willing to part with, I'd appreciate it. I have almost roughly 3/4 a pound of Reloader 17 that I could part with to help ease your pain. If you have any 7mm WSM brass, that would help too as I'd feel better tossing the oldest brass I have.

That's the UNSC match. Come early for the orientation and it is a great time for a meet and greet.

Seattle LRS, going out that way Friday, if three forks still has it, I could pick it up, did you try pintos or adventure sports

Lucky bastard... That was a smokin deal and if I wasn't broke that would have been mine. I just want to get some hands on time with the JAE to see if it's something I'd even consider. Alot of online hype and Surgeon seems to like them, but I haven't seen one at a match or anywhere else.

Ok i am tired of waiting to shoot so i took my 400 dollar bushnell hunting scope off my .270 and mounted it to my .308 so i can play. I will do a sight in on friday and hopefully work out some basic dope. my stock is stilll the poop hogue so i used some sweet duck tape to raise the comb hight. My rifle looks like a getto sniper but it should stilll function and be fun. I did everything i could think of to pull accuracy out of the crappy hogue to include sanding, and shimming. It should be very interesting to see my groupings at tomorrows sight in.

MJH - Thanks to your recommendations, I found the brass, but still no powder. I'll PM you with my phone number for your trip to Cle Elum.

Good job on putting something together ! Its way more fun playing that watching any day.

I'm in the same boat! I had to borrow about a hundred rounds from Unknown to shoot on Saturday! I have 30+ pounds of powder on order since January from 3 different sources and I still had to borrow ammo in order to shoot this match. Times are hard....

yeah the more i thought about it the more decided i would be super sad just watching so screw it i have a crap hunting optic and a horrible stock duck taped together but...... no one laugh :)

Dont take this the wrong way but I'll most likely laugh since I am in almost the same boat. Ammo built for a different shooter with a different rifle. Should be interesting guessing the dope out to 550 without trying it out. It should be an interesting match Saturday.

If you cant laugh, your not having fun.

Fed cop,
I have been to,dozens of matches where my rifle selection was based on which rifle is currently working, or which rifle I have ammo for. I think a shooter's ability to make due with whatever is on hand shows a true rifleman. Lots of people shoot well with high end rifles and expensive ammo. Doing reasonably well with what is at hand is extremely satisfying.

Yeah, but never heard is the saying "I would have done better if I had poor equipment."... lol
