the real story about this day:
A strong armed robbery happened (in a federal space) 2 suspects one was tased and was about as crazy as they come. we called for an ambulance. the reason for the rest of us running around "in 6 car convoys" we were looking for the second suspect. at no time did any of us ever see the guy with a camera.... well that guy in particular. in seattle if the police are there everyone has a camera out. unfortunatly we never found the second suspect :( maybe next time. I thought this was a funny and amusing article

True. Dont want to beat up on these guys on the job though, its not their fault. Will beat up on them when they go extra-constitutional though. They should be better identified.

I think it is misleading from the people upstairs at DHS to have "POLICE" as the most prominent thing on their vehicles and uniforms, rather than "DHS", or "FEDERAL POLICE". It seems someone upstairs is either embarrassed by who they are and what they do, or they are afraid of the public's reaction if the actually do identify themselves properly.

Jerry,
I agree with you...they are great people, and do a necessary job. I just don't understand the way they choose to designate themselves that way. I always thought that "Police" were municipal, "Sheriff" was county, "Trooper" was state law enforcement.

For those who didn't already know, DHS people were where they were supposed to be (starting on federal property), doing exactly what they were hired to do (protect federal property). When a crime occurs on their turf, they are not restricted to staying on federal property to solve that crime, or catch the suspects.

This is true, its called nexus. Many officers have found themselves in hot water by venturing to far into city or state business. Different federal agencies have different rules as well, getting into them all would be impossible.

IIf your talking about the picture of the two guys and one with the "police" on his back, neither of those two are feds.

That makes more sense. Hard to tell who the players are without a program. I don't suppose stealing credit has gone out of fashion. I used to get frustrated when we would do all the "legwork" only to have someone else come in after all the work, was done and tell the press how HIS agency had worked so long and hard on a case. Has this tendency to steal credit gotten any less prevalent since DHS became a parent agency, or is it as popular as ever?

Whenever I hear DHS I think TSA, hard for me to picture TSA running after a thief or even handling a firearm for that matter. We have too many agencies in our government, beginning to look like the old east Germany.

unknown: yeah some things never change.

ArmyJerry: TSA is well... my mom told me if i dont have anything nice to say.... you know the deal lol

ArmyJerry,
there are quite a few people (like me) who went into public service specifically because we did NOT like the way the "traditionalists" did business. I made a decision to stay at the line staff, or "in the trenches" rather than to become another bureaucrat who got there because they went along with the party line. After meeting FedCop, I get the impression that he is there because he truly does want to make sure people like you and I get our money's worth out of our tax dollars.

That doesn't mean I agree with the political decisions of the people many, MANY pay grades above FedCop. But it does mean that I hope there are many more people like him working for DHS. If it weren't for people like him, I would be far more worried about many of the things we see going on. I still worry, but I have hope.

spoken like a true genius, Most are great guys down low and even a few grades above me. I think as time goes on and these guys move up the chain eventually we will see some real change..... (lol) some good CHANGE i mean. ;)

I know many and shoot with many, I know what you mean, still don't like having feds so numerous, I do not trust our fed government to do the right thing like I used to anymore, not talking at the line level here but the political apparatus. I spent 8 years in the Army, turned down offer from NJ SP when I got out just becase I did not like what I ws seeing in my home state at the time, nothing to do with the Troopers (who I think are the baddest assed cops anywhere til this very day) but the politicians in charge of them.

The course of fire for the 18 May 2013 practical rifle match has been sent to all people on the mailing list. Kevin will probably be posting the course of fire on this site later. Anyone wanting to be added onto the mailing list should send a short email saying something like "put me on the list" to "[email protected].

Here is the course of fire for the May 18th Practical Rifle Match at UNSC. I hope to see most of you guys out there. If anyone has any questions just hit up Unknown, _Nick_ or myself and we will get you an answer. This is just a fun, laid back monthly match so I hope to see a bunch of new shooters as well as all of the regulars.

For those who missed the news, our matches are now on the club's calendar for the 3rd Saturday of each month.

Here is the TENTATIVE course of fire:

Target Placement
100 yards: Target #1: 6 inch square, 3 points,
Target #2: 5.5x8.5 inch rectangle, 2 points
Target #3: 8 inch round, 1 point
200 yards: Target #4: 6 inch square, 6 points
Target #5: 5.5x8.5 inch rectangle, 4 points
Target #6: 8 inch round, 2 points
300 yards: Target #7: 10 inch round, 4 points
375 yards: Target #8:50% IPSC, 6 points
425 yards: Target #9:50% IPSC, 7 points
500 yards: Target#10, 66% IPSC, 8 points
530 yards: Target#11, 66% IPSC, 9 points

All targets are worth 1 point on stages 1, 2, 3. Stage 4 will be the only stage where we use the points differential.

STAGE 1: TRUCK BED 12 rounds/120 seconds 8 targets, mandatory reload (One point per hit)
Begin in a pickup truck bed in overwatch position with up to 5 rounds loaded in the rifle. After the start signal engage T1 through 8 with one hit each. Must shoot until a target is hit before moving on, or out of ammo.

STAGE 2: ROPE OR BARREL TOP 11 rounds/180 seconds 11 targets, mandatory reload (One point per hit)
(Range conditions will determine whether a rope strung horizontally, or the top of a 55 gallon barrel will be used for support)
Begin at low ready with up to 3 rounds loaded in the rifle. AFter the start signal, move to the support (barrel or rope) and engage T1 through 3 with one shot at each target. Move to rooftop with empty rifle, reload, and engage T4 through 11 with one shot at each target.

STAGE 3: BARRICADE 15 rounds/180 seconds, 11 targets, mandatory reload (One point per hit)
Begin standing at low ready with up to 10 rounds loaded in the rifle. After the start signal, move to the left barricade, and engage T1 through 5 in that order through the enclosed ports. Shoot until a target is hit, then move to a new port for the next target. Only one hit on a target allowed per port. After hitting T1 through 5, move to the right hand barricade and engage T6 through 10 using the same procedure as used on the left hand barricade. When engaging T11, shooter may use any of the previously used ports for the final target.

STAGE 4: NO FATE BUT WHAT YOU MAKE 10 rounds/60 seconds (yes, only sixty) 11 possible targets
On this stage, all the targets will have various points values as noted above. Shooter MUST tell the spotters which target they intend to engage prior to each shot. Failure to notify the spotters of which target will be engaged will result in a 2 point penalty regardless of whether or not the target was hit.

Shooter begins in any position they choose. The shooter may use any prop, obstacle, support, or accessory they choose.
After the start signal, shooter engages any target they wish (after notifying the spotter) to accrue points. Any misses will result in the possible points value for the attempted target being subtracted from any points earned. A shooter cannot receive a negative score. Each target may be HIT only once.

Hey All -

I have some family stuff I need to do, so I won't be able to attend Carl's Kettle Falls match. It is sure to be a great time - with up to 200 rounds fired over two days. I also have a reservation at the Kettle Falls Inn. PM me if you have interest.

Anyone have an AR action vise block and a torgue wrench I can borrow? I need to put a barrel on my AR build.

Sounds good, let me know.

I have torque wrenches that you can use if connecting with Kevin doesn't work out.

Fedcop, let me know if you need more AI mags for the match. I have some AIAW, and one 5 round AIAE mag.

I still need an AR action vice block if anyone has one they'd let me borrow?

Yes sir, if I could borrow 1 for the match that would be great.

I'm in east bremerton, if you still need an AR action block. I'm new to the area, but may join you guys on some shoots.

Welcome! I live in Bremerton as well. If you're new to the area I can get together with you after I get off work (usually around 1800) sometime and fill you in on the local fare.

Hey guys. I was PM'd by a guy called MADrtcw today asking about my spot in Acme. I haven't seen him post up here, so I told him to contact either Nick, or Unknown about the monthly UNSC matches before I told him to meet me up there. Before, I would just invite him up, but lately the spot has been being abused. People using my targets, & stands, & not putting them away, etc.
If any of you guys know him let me know, & I'll reconsider. Otherwise, if he wants to shoot/watch a match, you guys can vet him for me, before I invite him up to shoot.
Thanks.

I know I don't need to remind everyone that we spend a LOT of time and effort maintaining spots and finding new spots. We try hard to share these with all newcomers who have a genuine interest. Please don't fuck it up. If you forgot to take down targets then get a hold of Jeff and simply apologize and let him know so he can at least go out and take them down so as to not get them stolen. We don't post up coordinates because we flat out know they'll be posted elsewhere and then the zombie mall ninjas will show up and trash them. I've recently found an area on this side out in the Olympic's out to 1K yards and I'm hoping to get some time this summer to get some more t-posts up then have a get-together so I can show all of you where it's at.

Oh, yes!! Me too I am dying to find a good spot to drop my steel at 1k.

I don't think its anyone on here leaving my targets up. They were angled for a ffp a lot farther up the rd from any we use. They also aren't concerned about the backstop either as I've found several snake trails from misses going back up the trail. I'll catch them one of these days, & have a little chat about safety, & other peoples stuff.
The new guy replied to me already, & says he wants to watch a match @ unsc so we'll see. He's apparently a novice lr shooter, so he'll need some pointers, etc. I say if he has a rifle to just get a hold of Unknown, & shoot the match.

I'm a new guy checking in at the request of Hunter121. Currently I am on deployment but have a 300 WM under construction at HighSpeedShooting in Yakima. Can't say when I'll be back to Oak Harbor and I can't say how much longer I will live in WA but looking to see or take part in a match or long range session sometime in the fall.

Welcome! When you get back from deployment let us know and hopefully we can get you out with that 300...

If things for the matches work out the way I hope, I would really like to put on a match where rifles like 300 Win Mag, and 7MM mag can shoot along with all the other rifles. Essentially, all it would require would be super strong mounting systems that won't be easily knocked down. The closest steel target would probably be 300 yards. If we can convince the club to allow alternative targets, I can buy a bushel of apricots, a couple hundred eggs, or blocks of wood cut from 2x2 or 2x4 for closer targets.. I have some other ideas too.

So after trying my first loads out today my best load was .308 175g SMK 41g varget, into fed once fired, cci primed oal 2.825. Anyone use a similar load? If so could you give me a rough velocity? If not, Nick you may have to show me again how to use that app again to get velocity.

My Kimber tactical 308 likes 42.5 gr of Varget with the 168 smk, so similar. I've never ran it over a chrono though.

According to Lees reloading data for a 175 grain at max load of 45grains, 2.8OAL of varget = 2690. I was actually going to shoot that exact same bullet today with 43.5 grains but the range was too packed to chrono it.

Glad to see you found us MADrtcw. Get your load work done, & get a hold of Unknown, & go shoot the UNSC match. The longest shot is only 550yd, & you will have a blast, & probably learn something. Along with meeting a bunch of great guys.

Good morning, I shoot .308. my 175 SMK/Varget load is 44.8g, cci br2, COAL 2.234 with Hornady brass. I'm getting right at 2620 out of my 20 inch barreled Savage. Hope that helps a bit even?

Mike

Thanks all, this is good info. I am a very beginner handloader I still have tons to learn. I really need to pick some brains on proper case sizing. I dont think I am doing it right, nor do I know what constitutes a safe case to reload.
