Gunsmithing Metric Threads

RJB, I would like to see anything that you have Machined. Your Flute machine looks like the Rope twister that my Grand Father made from a old spud digger in 1914. It did work.

Its easy:

Pitch x .03937.

G92 X. . . . Z. . . .R. . . .F. . . .
X. . . .
X. . . .
X. . . .
X. . . .
G0 X. . . Z. . .
M00

Run for the money? Let's see some pics of what you do there hot rod.

I think we've all had about enough of you. You remind me of a fly that doesn't get the hint when the swatter comes out.

A bedding job?
A stock inlet?
Samples of threadwork?
Barrel fluting?
Bolt Fluting?
Ok, an easy one, ceracoat?
Paintwork?

Let's see your best piece.

How many rifles you built?

Waiting??? I want to see um ace.

You run your cake hole challenging people on subject matters that clearly you know little about with taunts that are juvenile at best. Then when your pecker gets smacked you start pinging questions like "where'd you buy that cutter from Chad?"

Run for money? Dave Tooley has my deepest respect and he'd eat your ass Junior. I bet he at least knows when to shut the coolant off and let a tool eat. . .

So again, Put your $ where your mouth is. Let's see it.

What you don't get is really simple for everyone else to see:

Its not beating a chest. Its MARKETING scooter. Its promotion of products and services as I'm engaged in this trade to make a profit so that my business can flourish and support my family and its employees. Using your opinion as a barometer I guess Pepsi is chest beating when the blind folds go on and they do a taste challenge.

People want winners. Do you want a pilot that says "hope I can do this" or the pilot that says, "bring it!"

How bout a heart surgeon? "hope this works" as he's about to cut open your grandfather for a Triple Bipass? I don't think so.

SO, Let's see JUST how fast your alleged money really is. Show us, educate us, humble us. (me especially since I'm the narcissist)

C.

You might want to edit or delete this post. I will stand my ground. Responding to your last post on this thread, I have no desire to gain attn. (hence my reluctance to post pics of my work) As far as getting into the field. I suspect you were in diapers when I started.

Sure you are a master machinist. If I had your machines, I'd be making actions.

I find it comical that you ignored my Q about wanting to see examples of menial fluting, bedding, inletting and such.

PM me your email or I will post them on here. Your call. I won't stand for this bitch slap uncontested.

BTW, glad to hear you found a grunt to do your dirty work. Maybe if you don't ruin him, he will move on to be a gunsmith someday.

Little project I worked on today. Threaded a bbl shank cutoff to hold a 1/2-28 can adapter so I could open it up to 5/8-24 for a 300 Blackout.

Pics suck so I shot some thru my tig welding stereo microscope. They suck too but a little better than a blur.

Chopped bbl threaded for the can.

you have some lame photos. I broke the link so I don't have to make the thread huge. What is the runout on the mounted can?

just like in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xd1CFOr3mE

how did you test your work for safety and concentricity?

Correct on the pics. Got a tip from a bud. I'll try it next time.

There is zero runout. I didn't check it. That's one of the beautiful things about machining. If you know what you're doing you don't need to check your work.

Before all of the cheerleaders start squawking, I did some time working for an SOT. This isn't my first rodeo. I've made plenty of cans.

Look, I don't have a dog in this fight, but following your remark to Chad where you stated that you'd be manufacturing actions if you had his machinery, then you spit out garbage like the quote below...you sir, should never be manufacturing anything that is inches from someone's face and containing a small explosion.

That's one of the beautiful things about machining. If you know what you're doing you don't need to check your work.

This just keeps getting better! Are you off your meds?? You state that there is zero runout but, yet, you didn't check it. Huh? I guess you can see a tenth by eye alone?

RJB - if you're as perfect a gunsmith as you think you are then why isn't your work constantly mentioned in Benchrest, tactical, or on the dog fields? Why aren't you willing to shut everyone up by showing examples of your supposedly outstanding work? Since you're so up in Chad's ass then why don't you show him what you're worth and give him some competition? If you're as perfect as you say you are then folks will beat a path to your door . . . well, until they discover your social skills.

I really think that you should do yourself a favor and take another break from posting. You're only digging yourself a deeper hole.

Heh heh,

Good to see the cheerleaders are faithful. BT, Put on your shocked face! I can't remember the last time I test fired a rifle I rebarreled. There have been many. When the bbl/bolt clearance is right and the bolt won't move when closed on a go gauge, what's the need?

Woodsy,

There's nothing to check. The threads on the bbl are on dead nuts. The adapter threads are as well. If the can is off it's on the mfg's end and can easily be proven. As far as publicity, I don't advertise unless you call posting here an ad. Most of the work I do is for hunters. They don't do much Tac or BR. As I've said before, those writers want you to pay labor to write an article. Seems it should be the other way around. I have all of the work I want.

I'll show some of my work. As I said I don't have much I'm proud of around here. Was kind of waiting for a reply from Chad. Obviously that ain't happenin'. Chill out, I'll round some up and take some more crappy pics.

why test fire a rifle before it goes out the door, thats silly, i'm with you RJB. Why double check your work, that's time consuming, I'm with you here as well. Pure AWSOME this is

This thread is just so, um, wow ...

Every single gun that leaves my shop is test fired and function tested prior to delivery. Every 1st cartridge is cataloged w/date and S/N.

I have boxes of the stuff here.

Some of us do do this.

Good idea from a liability standpoint. I left boxes of them at the shop I worked at when I left retail. Don't see the need now because I know there won't be a problem.

I know nothing about machining, but reading the thread I went thru a lot of popcorn and peanuts.

Test firing a gun before it leaves? That would be like a mechanic test driving a car after he worked on it just to make sure everything is good to go, who would do that lol

WOW, just f#@*ing WOW. I couldn't tell you the difference between a Mill and a Lathe, I leave that to people who know what they're doing. However, I HAVE dealt with explosives for over 20yrs, and have used them in anger on occasion. All this time I had no idea that I didn't know what I was doing because I double-check my work. Even worse than that, before I pop smoke on something that could KILL the guys on MY side, I ask SOMEONE ELSE who knows what HE's doing to double-check my shot to make sure I didn't brain-cramp on something. Hell, if given the time to pre-plan, I'll even do a fricken test shot just to verify that I'm going to get the desired result.
I sure do hope that the A&P Mechanics that work on the planes I fly for 15hrs on a stretch around the world DON"T know what they're doing, because heaven FUCKING forbid that they should double check their work before letting me fly on it.

JUST WOW

Chad, please feel free to double-check or test-fire any work I send to you, at least until you figure out what you're doing.

This statement would be hilarious enough by itself, but to find it located in a thread where you had to ask for help on how to cut metric threads?!? That's just comedy gold.

And yes, I understand that setting up and operating the lathe to cut metric-pitch threads is a different set of operations than setting it up to cut concentric threads, but the entire premise of the question kinda undermines any claims as to superiority of one's knowledge or work. There isn't anything wrong with asking for help (and note that it was provided with only the most sincere of intentions), but following it up with a bunch of bombastic bragging makes one look... well, just a bit silly and insecure.

A few months ago, LongRifles Inc was having an issue with suppressor threads. Another member here explained how to fix it.

Ship today it must, whatever it takes
uttered from his lips.
But the pitch was off, the parts didn't match,
despite the reading from his calipers tips.
So he straddled his worn out lathe at last
with a thread file in his hand
"16 pitch looks like 1.5 metric to me,
I'll hide the marks with the blast cabinets sand.

The job was done, the rifle was gone
and he massaged the kinks from his neck.
Now comes the most important,( and my favorite part)
to the drive thru to cash the check.

Thanks p&p! Mr Bryant, you prob find humor in a lot of things you don't understand. My question had nothing to do with how to cut threads. As I've stated before. you could teach a monkey to rebarrel a rifle. My question was merely about the function of the machine.

Sure, I come off as a pompous ass. My tolerance for stupidity is very low. I never claimed to be superior in knowledge and hardly consider anything I've posted bragging. Most of my rhetoric is simply defending myself from attacks like the one Mr Dixon threw at me that started this mess. Now if you want to see some bragging, check out some of Chad's posts.

My point is Chad is a computer programmer and rifle assembler. Oh, and he's a pretty good painter to boot. He could die tomorrow and anyone that has the slightest clue how to set up a bbl, action or stock in a lathe or mill and pick up where left off. Hardly gunsmithing in my opinion.

Sincerely, Insecure in Cedar Park;-)

Latest assemblies can be seen here in the G/S section.

You got me pegged. FWIW, my wife does the painting. I suck at it as I have no artistic talent. Just a predilection for numbers and squiggly lines on a computer screen.

You also nailed it on the head. That's the whole intent of my shop. Give someone the ability to generate a repeatable/predictable result without spending a decade apprenticing them. The military has made a science of it; Cross Training, etc.

It's a business owner's wet dream if it can be done successfully and cnc's are nothing more than a force multiplier. 3 months ago John didn't know dick about chambering a barrel. Today he does 10+ per day as he answers emails and catches the phone. He does not have the power of divine intervention or a Ouija board so he does have to check his work.

Win/Win in my book.

So sit there a be a craftsman buddy. Knock yo self out brothah man. Start a full time gig doing it. I'm begging you to. Show us how its done, put us all out of business.

In the meantime, us dipchits will be right here amongst the cows mass producing our garbage. If only they were 3rd country nationals. Then I could violate a bunch of human trafficking laws as well.

I'm going to institute a new policy. All future employees have to have a bar code tattoo on their foreheads for the morning scan when they clock in. What the hell, they've gotz naaaah skilllz.

Xcept the new kid, I've not ruined him yet.

Yet. . .

Gotta love them minions!

You are correct in at least one case - I don't understand how your brain works, and yet it's fuckin' hilarious to read your posts.

Obviously your tolerance for stupidity is pretty high. You live with it every day. If I pull a car apart to repair after an accident or just because a customer wants to upgrade or change something. No matter how confident I am with my ability, I test drive, check and double check everything. Anytime you provide a service to someone you should at least make sure everything is safe to operate and pro forms to your standard. It's not just liability, it's good business.

So lets end this with...a contest! Submit to me your finest piece of gunsmithing and machining and i will judge which is the best and we can put this one to bed. The winning rifle will become mine and the winning 'smith will have bragging rights and the losers rifle as a trophy.

This has been my favorite thread of the week, by far. Not because of any knowledge I've gained...no, no, not at all...but for the entertainment value.

It's like a train wreck, in slo-mo, that won't stop, and I cannot tear myself away, even though I know it's probably wrong...and I should move on (nothing to see here), but it won't stop, and I can't stop looking...

I think you all may be surprised how few smiths...including a bunch who are revered on this site DO NOT test fire the rifles that they build.

The best guys in the business still test fire their work. I would not want to start and finish a project without getting the satisfaction that it works properly. That would leave me unsatisfied in my work.
I just don't comprehend how you could not want to check your work.

Holy crap! RJB HAS to be Anthony Weiner’s twin brother. That certainly would explain his narcissistic behavior.

We shall all hail Rim Job Bob!! The most perfect machinist in the Nation (in his mind at least).

I believe this is the best post on this thread! Thx for the chuckle Lash.

Chad, I'm done with the rat race. All I do is tinker now. No debt, no pressure, just another cow in the pasture as you put it. Your chest pounding will do more to put you out of buis than I or anyone like the younger me could. I tried to settle issues I had with you thru pm's. Your choice to ignore me and then blast me on this thread has lead to this. BTW I loved the sitting in crap and yanking it before your edit. Priceless. I understand that you have accomplished a lot and Truthfully, I respect you for your efforts and wish you success. Hopefully you have learned something from this and will think twice before you bitch slap someone in a post that you know nothing about. You are not the only one that knows how to run a machine or put a rifle together.

T300, you are talking apples and oranges. A vehicle has 1000's of parts. Most bolt rifles have less than 100. Only 3 are critical to to catastrophic failure. Bolt, bbl and receiver.

KYS, Try to comprehend that anyone worth their salt that does this knows that the damned thing will fire and extract when it is done right.

Sweet! shankster, I'm headed your way withing the next mo. How about getting together for a Moosehead?

Glad to see Headgiving Cheerleader Woodsy is still on board. I could be wiener's brother but I don't know because all I do is look at myself in the mirror.

You know I suck as a machinist compared to a CNC machine. (although the last predator I did was a thou off on the rec. face) I tried to take some pics of the threads I cut today but I suck as bad with a camera as bad as I do on a machine. I think I did something wrong because I had to clamp the bbl in a vice to screw the receiver on. I could hardy get it on without a wrench. Lube helped but I almost had to stick a screwdriver thru the brake to get it to screw on. Feels smooth as glass but something must be wrong. Maybe I should testfire this one;-) Reckon I may have to get me one of them CNC thingamajigs.

20$ says this asshat will be back. Any takers?

I really hope so! This is my favorite spontaneous combustion of all time! Despite being offered water and CO2 to put out the flames, it just keeps burning!?! So much fun to watch.

Yep, try telling that to a customer that gets a rifle that won't perform after they spend their hard earned cash on it. No one is above a faulty part or a mistake on the machining. There isn't a person in the world that can tell me they run a lathe or mill with 100% success rate. That's not even feasible.

I couldn't agree more. You can bet your ass I've made plenty of mistakes. I like to call them Bud(wieser) marks. 2 bad ones that come to mind are bbls I trashed when I forgot to reset the Y zero when I was cutting opposing flutes. Nothing like watching a brand new blank fly across the room into the trash can. 1 was a factory bbl so I got to buy him a new blank, fit and flute it for the price of a flute job. That's a hard pill to swallow.

The key is to stand behind your work when they spend their hard earned $ Time will teach you not to make mistakes. Only a fool would knowingly turn out a job with machining mistakes.

So what do we call someone who unknowingly turns out a job with machining mistakes because he's too arrogant to check his work? Not saying that you routinely turn out jobs with mistakes, but since you said you don't check your work, the implication is there that it happens from time to time.

I can't stand this anymore!!!! So bloody funny - I'm sitting here at the computer laughing over and over again at all the comments, including guys pouring gas on a raging fire - hahahahaha!

I actually know Chad quite well as a gunsmith, master machinist, inventor, tinker master and a businessman. Guys with his skills are less than one in a million and I enjoy his posts about his builds. It humbles many, and is a great marketing tool for his business.
