I think it gets confusing for some people is when they see the caliber name on this thread is 6.5 saum or they see that the caliber engraved on the rifle barrel is 6.5 saum and it is also being referred to as 6.5 4S. I can see that could get confusing for some. just my 2 cents, But I'm used to being called all kinds of names too

Question for those who have a 6.5 4S and have shot 130's and 140's: Got an order in at GAP for one. I'll be using this rifle for deer hunting here in Missouri and elk back in Colorado. Thoughts on 140 vs 130 Bergers? I like the idea of a little more energy from the 140's but does it really matter? I picked up 600 140's thinking it would be the best option but wanted to hear from those with experience. If it helps in responses, I won't be pointing bullets.

I have the pleasure of owning serial #9 of the GAP 6.5 SAUM, I think I am going to shoot the 140gr VLD. The main reason is they seem to be readily available here in my area. I have read most of this thread and haven't seen, or I missed, what depth you are seating the bullets?

What is your ogive to base measurement for the 140 VLD?

i am 2.910 coal with Amax, that should put 140 Berger at 2.945 to 2.950 coal

just so every one is informed, the 6.5 4S and the 6.5 Saum are the same thing. 6.5 4S is what we call it as a kinda inside joke. 4S (Super, Secret, Squirrel, Shit)

Alliant Power Pro 4000MR is a viable powder option as well. I was just testing H4831sc, H1000, 4000MR this weekend in my comp gun and they all work well. I spun on another barrel onto my team gun, another one that gets easy accuracy, and good velocity. All with 140gr bergers. I'm going to shoot this caliber probably for the rest of the competitive season. Tuned right, it feeds as quickly as I can work the bolt.

I drove through Oregon a few weeks back and stopped at nosler. They had a couple of boxes of 300 saum brass but no 7 saum. I picked up the 300's figuring they'd work with a little more work. I also stopped at cabelas in Boise on the way home and they had a few bags of Rem 300 saum brass so I grabbed those too.

I have a like new 700 xcr in 300 wsm for a donor and a 3 contour rock 8 twist. I wonder if GAP would put something like that together for me or if they only like to use their actions and bartlien tubes. The 8 twist might be a little more twist than needed but I prefer the 140 vld's and have a pile of them.

I read somewhere that they use about .088 freebore on their reamer but I think I'd prefer a little less. You guys that are starting with 140 vlds at 2.945 is that with the .088ish freebore reamer? I'd rather start at about 2.9".

I wish I had the cash right now for one of their full builds but with these other parts in hand and and another baby on the way.....

Quick question for you if you don't mind - or maybe Pat or George can chime in with an answer. Anyway, I was looking at the specs for the Elite Hunter on the GAP website and it has the barrel showing as a GAP #3 contour, is this the same or similar to a regular Bartlein #3??

#3 Bartlein, 1-8.7 5R, with six flutes are the tubes they're using for the Extreme Hunter platform.

12 pages here, so I'm sorry if this has already been asked.

I have 2500 rounds on my Bartlein 26 inch barrel chambered in .260. The rifle is off getting a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel spun up on it now.

Will the 6.5 SAUM be okay with a short barrel? I was thinking of chopping that guy down to 20-22 and having it rechambered on another action.

If not, I'm just going to have it made into a 16-20 inch 6.5 creedmoor.

I think I misunderstood the measurement...

2.945 is COAL right George? I was wanting to know ogive to base. I am using the Hornaday tool with #5-26 insert to attach to my caliper so I can measure ogive to base. Isn't that more accurate than tip to base? just based of the tips having slight variations

I am open to whatever works!

It seems most comparators are a little different, if you get the average of a few bullets, that should yield a good starting point for OAL rather than BTO length. Once you load a few on either side of that you can get a BTO with your specific tool and your specific barrel. Most of the bergers are within .005 of each other (OAL) so you shouldn't have to go too far to find the right seating depth. Good luck and hope it works out for you.

I seem to have slightly different numbers than what has been posted previously. My .081" FB reamer and Berger hunting 130 VLD's (meplat lightly trimmed and tipped) touching the lands is 2.875" COL. The bearing surface is ~ .025" above the neck/shoulder.

I have been following this thread since the beginning, and talking with Pat while this rifle has been developed. First off I can say without any reservation that there isn't anything that I would change about the Extreme. Hands down the most deadly rifle that I have ever shot. I can not believe how fast the lock time is on this gun, I'm still shaking my head over it. I can not believe how fast that bullet gets to the target and how hard it hits. We shot steel at 830 meters, it's just sick how accruate this thing is.
I drank the kool aid, I have to have one. I have been looking for the ultimate hunting rifle and I honestly believe this is it. GAP has knocked this one out of the park.

Nick, I don't have that measurement for you. And I also thought you were using the hybrids, it they are 140 VLD's then they are going to be about the same if not exactly the same loaded length as the 130 vld's which is 2.900 COAL.

Good Intel says that Remington is running both 300 RSAUM and & RSAUM this month, so it should be out in abundance in OCT. The doubled the production order because of this caliber and the response it has received. I will work as hard as I can at the shot show to get the brass made to our spec with the correct headstamp. 6.5 GAP 4S

I load the 140 VLDs. I also use the Hornady #5-26 insert. 2.945 COAL with the 140 VLDs is in the lans hard. I initially started there and it did not take long to figure out that figure came from the 140 Hybrid. I run the 140 VLDs at 2.905 & 2.910. To me-the 2.905 is sitting right on the lans atleast with my eyes. I will try George's number this weekend of 2.900 see what happens, but either way it is definately about spot on.

I will get the Hornady measurement tonight if your still interested.

GAP Crusader 6.5 SAUM
24" 1-8.5 twist
140 VLD
61.5 H1000
WLRM I will be trying "CCI BR2": this weekend.
2.905-2.910 COAL (has been awesome for me)
