Safran/ Vectronix Terrapin-X *** Update***

Welp I’m retarded and must’ve been thinking of the kilo 2400. Sorry for the confusion.

Use the solver in the Kestrel?

Assuming you already had a solid solver and wanted to get this latest and greatest lrf. Could you turn off AB in it and just use range and angle with an AB equipped kestrel? Or do you sync them and theoretically they talk to each other and all the data is same-same?
Just wondering... All I’m using is a Weatherflow and 4DOF and BallisticsARC, but I could see myself upgrading down the road.

or like most people, software free to $40 for your smart phone.

Ok I received my X and I figured out how to connect to the Kestrel but when I want to connect to my phone app, the kestrel does not show up on my phone. I can connect to the X app but not the kestrel app on my iPhone. Anyone else have this happen ?

There is a bluetooth setting on the Kestrel that you choose "Terrapin" or "PC/Mobile (something like that)". You can only be connected to one device at a time, so if your Kestrel is connected to the Terrapin-x, it cannot also be connected to the Kestrel phone app. Same with the Terrapin. It can be connected to the Kestrel or the X app, but not both at same time.

Just identified the plate we would suggest for the TerrapinX.

Yep got that figured out. Its not even related to the X, But on my phone my kestrel is not even listed when I go to connect to the Kestrel App.

dIrthead1, Got it figured out. I just turn the Bluetooth off and then switch to the Mobile. Works like a charm. Mike

I have a simple question. Will the new terripin pair with anything other than the kestrel or it's own app? So can it pair with my pda & FFS?
Thanks.

No, at least not currently. I heard somewhere (maybe from Frank), that Vectronix had plans to expand the platform in the future through updates to the software. That "could" include the ability to pair with other bluetooth devices.

None that i have seen , am courrently making my own , as i would realy like it to be small , and not use bino puches

Anyone have a recommendation for a protective case for the Terrapin-X?

I think this has been my biggest disappointment with the Terrapin-X. Their dump bag pouch, at least for me, is worthless. It would have been so much better if they could have included - or had available as an option - a nice protective case.

Was really looking forward to getting my Terrapin -X. Just found out the package was likely stolen from my front door on Tuesday.

Looking like I'm going to be out $1800 and no laser range finder, I'm very disappointed today.

This makes me sad

Did you really allow them to be delivered and left WITHOUT signing for them? If not, somebody else is on the hook.

I did tell them to waive the signature requirement, as I've had one hell of a time receiving packages that require a signature. Because my wife is working all the time and doesn't share the same last name as me, and I'm always out of country for work, and companies such as FedEx have the worst customer service - it's a nightmare for me to receive certain packages.

Guess at the end of the day it's my fault. Never had a package stolen as my front door is out of view from the street. First time they scored a big one.

Fuck me. Expensive mistake.

Don't give up on the shitbags that easy. Check with all neighbors that might have a camera system recording and pay attention to the inhabitants Probably looking for druggies so not likely driving Mercedes, There job is easy. Follow the big truck and strike within MINUTES. There are lots of systems recording so suggest you make up fliers to let neighbors know about your loss (for their own good) and they will likely contact you if they have recordings for your review. I would have said for the police but that only happens if there is a body involved. Give it a week or two and contact all pawn shops within a couple of hours so that they can reach you. The shitbags probably still don't know what they have. Good luck and keep us informed in case we can help.

Thanks, will do. I've been browsing the local classifieds as well as calling the local pawn shops. Hopefully something turns up.

one time an 4k package i sent to my friend in US got delivered to his neighbor ,all ended well but was couple days of trepidation before neighbor showed up with the package. also found out that fully paid insurance wouldn't even cover 1/3rd of the package value.

Looked for bunch of options for more secure shipping finaly setteled on UPS for regular shippments, more expensive than others but first super fast 3-4 days from Europe to US and secondly their man delivering and signature only (many other shippers use local contractors) but none give insurance worth a piss for overseas shipment's .

For those interested- been comparing Terrapin X, old Terrapin and Sig Kilo yesterday and today. Frank’s findings are spot on with my experience. Old terrapin slightly outranges the new one (that seemed to be amplified the darker it got for me), Terrapin X and old Terrapin both outrange the Sig Kilo every time, day or night (I have been a Sig Kilo fan since it came out). I’ll attach some pics. Here were my findings-
Bright Daylight-
Terrapin X- hit 2,235yds, couldn’t get it to go further
Old Terrapin- hit 2,537
Sig Kilo- could not hit 1,900ys, both Terrapin’s did every time

Dusk-
Terrapin X- hit 3,060 yds
Old Terrapin- hit a whopping 4,700 yds
Sig Kilo- wouldn’t range 1,900, both Terrapin’s hit it every time

Sir:
What is that tripod attachment you have to place all 3 LRFs side by side?

I was just jotting down the serial number of my TX and noted that the part number is 914561 though my invoice from Euro-Optic is for part #914734. The latter is also the part # that is used in the ads for the TX at both EO and MHS? Anybody else notice the same thing? Is mine the correct version of the TX?

This is going to be a weird question but my PLRF05 will range down to 8 yards, what will the X go down to?

I use my PLRF05 for FT air rifle matches so that's why I'm asking. It's actually a yard off inside 55Y, and a foot off at 10Y, which I compensate for. Got me a 48/48 last weekend BTW.

Well I shoot ELR, etc too. Looking to upgrade if it'll work out.

Now that the Terrapin-X have been out in the field for a few weeks, we've not seen too much information regarding their performance. Those with the units, how about the "good, bad and the ugly" with respect to the this LRF's ability to perform up to the hype/expectations. Would you buy again or opt for the Leica 2700 for less money?

Any input is appreciated...

If I recall right it is 11 yards not 8, but I can try it and see for you

So, Ive been using mine a few weeks now and am “generally” very pleased. It is also replacing my Sig 2400, and I too, did a side by side comparison of the two, akin to Frank with similar results.
Couple of observations:
1. No case....that douche bag they provide is an odd accessory.
2. Range is much better than the Kilo as is the quality of the glass itself. No more ranging fuzzy soccer balls.
3. Battery life is a PROBLEM. Mine has already died twice, at the range, due to low batteries. Might be something to do with the Bluetooth settings, or simply not shutting down fast enough. Ive reached out to the company for suggestions with no response as of yet. (12 hours ago). Will update with additional info
4. Overall....i like it very much and the integration with my Kestrel is fantastic.
One draw back - if I am quickly moving from target to target, it gets confused goes into a quick 15 second “lock up”....which can be frustrating. I’m trying to figure out if it me (operator error), or software issue.

Does any one regret selling their old terrapin to get the new one?

Well, I sold my Terrapin a couple of years ago. I regretted that decision many times. Since then, I tried a Leica 2400, Sig 2000 and 2400, and a Terrapin X. The Terrapin X is a good unit, but I sold it and bought another original Terrapin. The bluetooth connectivity of the X to a Kestrel is great, but it just didn't have quite the horsepower as far as ranging ability as the original. Overall, the X is nicely built, but not nearly as robust as the original. The X is probably the best of current production range finders (under $2K), but if you want/need to range little stuff past 2000 yards consistently, it's not as good as the original. That's just my opinion and other's might have a different experience.

They say that as a measuring capacity the Leica HD-B 3000 is better than the terrapin x, I am waiting to see them side by side to decide what to buy

My experience with Terrapin x , single button operation is a bit anoying and speed leaves much to be desired , no pouch and some sort of drop bag instead are disappointing ,would expect a proper pouch at 2k ,but so far ranging preformace has been great ,above any LRF i tested so far ,its the most HP you can buy under 2k $ .

Am kinda disapointed at no response to my e-mails in regards to my questions on 3d model so , am drawing my own for some accesory development ...
Its kinda rough but more than close enough for what i need to model stuff

Hi Guys, I have just purchased a terrapin x, it is a good rangefinder, nearly as good as original terrapin, side by side ranging the older unit has the edge on distance. I am pleased with it but I am having problems with the connection to my kestrel. The link keeps dropping but still shows connection on kestrel, not on terrapin and the bluetooth indicator flashes rapidly. The battery drain when this happens causes a new battery to drain very quickly. Anybody else having connection problems and poor battery life?

My X unit connects very easily with my Kestrel, even 4-5’ away and always remains connected as long as I have my 5700 turned on and it is “active”.

When not using the kestrel I turn off the X BT with the 3 clicks and choose off. If I am going to use the Kestrel with the X I first turn on the 5700 - then the X with one press, followed by the quick 3 clicks, choosing Kestrel.

Since I use it almost everyday the choosing BT to be connected to the K or not takes just 2 seconds and has become an easy procedure.

When I turn off the kestrel I then I turn off the X BT and hence no battery drain.

I have owned 2 other terrapins and few 15’s/10’s and am very pleased with the X - especially giving me the instant AB solution. The other Vectronix units may have ranged further, but I enjoy the balance of the 5700 connectivity, ranging ability and ruggedness for my purposes.

EDIT: what I posted above is incorrect. Leave the X unit on the Kestrel BT mode - it will go to sleep after 3 minutes of inactivity after a range measurement and will not continue searching for BT connection, resulting in normal battery life.

Many thanks for the reply, it will reconnect if I open the kestrel bluetooth page and let the "connected" show up. Then no problems for a while, so I guess I could live with that but during a competition yesterday and earlier today there was no reticle on press of the rangeing button but the bluetooth link was still active on the kestrel?? Removing the battery dropped the connection so I guess the x was still active but no display. A new battery then worked OK but dropped the connection later, frustrated I tried the old battery that I thought was dead, and it worked. There is a problem I think with the bluetooth dropping and not reconnecting which also drains the battery. I have emailed support and will see where it goes! Sorry for the long post!!

As an update, I had a call back from Vectronix this morning. I spoke at length with a product developement Manager, upshot is a new unit being sent today and can send old unit back when it arrives and I am happy with it. This is excellent support. They have a 97% success rate, unfortunately mine was one of the 3% that failed.
