Question about small rifle primers and large firing pins... I've had my large firing pin bolt bushed by LRI, but they didn't turn down the diameter of the firing pin. They just bushed it to remove the space between the aperture and firing pin. Anyone care to guess whether I can shoot 6BR variants with small rifle primers without piercing them?

An update as to my 6BR barrel I’m having Whidden make for me in case anyone was interested in Whidden for AI barrels. They quoted me 3-4 weeks originally. After 5 weeks, I emailed them for an update on it. That was last Thursday, and they said it should be about 1 or 2 days to finish some clean up on it and it would be finished. It’s been almost a week since then, and still haven’t heard from them. They have been extremely good about responding to me both times I’ve emailed them. The first time I messaged them was because after 5 days of the barrel having been delivered, they hadn’t messaged me or called to say they got it alright. They responded within 24 hours to let me know they had it. The second was last Thursday, and they responded within an hour. I’m not particularly happy at the obligatory gunsmith blowing deadlines trope, especially a quote of 1-2 days turning into at least a week (though the delay is definitely not ridiculous by any stretch yet, especially considering a full weekend between the 1-2 day quote), but their communication is excellent, at least as far as responding to customers. That’s far more than you seem to get with most gunsmiths these days. Hopefully I’ll have it next week and can start playing with it and post some pics. Assuming it is delivered in the next 1 or 2 weeks, and there aren’t any problems with it, I’d definitely recommend them to someone looking to get an AI barrel spun up for a reasonable price.

Update-
I just got the invoice and a message saying it was finished today. Their communication was excellent once again, I’m really impressed with their customer service and response times. Ultimately, they finished it in 5 weeks and 3 days from when the barrel was delivered to them. I’ve had much worse times in the past, and have seen some reports of much worse very commonly from other smiths. Once it gets here, I’ll update about its quality and how it shoots, but so far I’d definitely recommend them if you want an AI barrel made for a good price (chamber, threading, and shipping was under $400).

I have a large firing pin on my AX and have sent about 1000 rounds downrange in 6br without issue. small rifle primers, lapua brass, factory ammo and handloads. I run near the upper end of published load data, no signs of pressure. Gradious barrel

The issues aren't with the firing pin diameter per say, but the gap between firing pin hole and firing pin. You'll be good to go now that it's bushed.

Well, I received my 1993 "camo" AI AW and have spent a good chunk of my day in an acetone bath. Here are some before and after pictures.

I will try to strip the last stubborn layers out but pretty happy with the result so far.

What is the original color sniper grey or black? It looks grey and I never knew they came in that color.

The original color is green. The stock is a bit hazy because there is still some residue of the film left on the stock.

Got the AT LE in last night! AMG mounted on a 3602 Spuhr, pretty damn stoked! Thanks @milehighshooting for the sale!

Had an extra harris laying around, but plan on purchasing an Atlas CAL here in the near future. Also ppan on buying that picatiny block that replaces the spigot slot that ome of the hide members designed. He has a deal setup with anarchy ourdoors or something and aren't available yet i don't think.

Nice setup, looks great!

I’m the guy that designed the bipod spigots, they are available and ready to ship now from Anarchy. Check them out here —> https://www.anarchyoutdoors.com/accuracy-international-spigot-mount/

Let me know if you have any questions!

I suppose it’s time I join in with my AT.
It has felt like a new rifle since replacing the spigot with the Picatinny rail from @samb300 through Anarchy Outdoors. It has been the absolute best upgrade I’ve made yet beside switching the original 24” 308 barrel with a 26” 260 Bartlein gain twist from MHSA.

Glad you’re liking the spigot mount, thanks for your business!

Prime 130, until I decide I have enough brass to reload. Which could be awhile because it shoots Prime well enough and I have a metric shit ton from when they had their big sale last year.

Thanks. I'm shooting the Prime 130 in an AI 24" barrel with similar good results.

Looks good Sam!
I'm curious though why you abandoned the slightly offset center hole that allowed the tip of the QD swivel to enter the round part of the keyslot and thus kept the whole thing even lower profile? Was it just an insignificant gain compared to the aesthetics?
Thanks
If anyone with an AX or AXMC has ever wanted an anti-rotation QD sling mount option for the forend, I designed one that is now available through Anarchy Outdoors.

It’s smaller, thinner, and more snag-free than the factory pic rail/QD mount combo. It is also anti-rotation, with stops at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. Each stop has approximately 15 degrees of rotation, so there’s still enough room to get comfortable while you’re slung up for positional shooting.

Material is 4140 steel which is Black Nitrided after machining. I wanted to go with steel versus aluminum for the extra strength and durability, even if it is a little heavier. Total weight including the two screws is only 1.3oz.

This will work on both pre-14 and post-14 AX, AXMC, AX338 and AX-AICS forends. All you will need is the correct mounting screws for your forend (you can purchase with or without screws depending on if you need them).

Let me know what you guys think!

Sam

Good catch! I revised the design from the prototype because in my research I discovered it violated a patent that BCM has on their KeyMod sling mount. When I originally designed the prototype it was a completely organic design and I thought I had stumbled on a great idea with the sling stud protruding into the rail itself; turns out BCM had already done it and I wasn’t willing to pursue it further for that reason.

The production version is still only 0.25” thick where it mounts, but the center section is now 0.375” thick where the sling stud attaches.

Thanks,

Sam

Gonna run a ckye pod with picatinny rail on my AT.

Any idea which pic rail length will run full length on the bottom, or am I going to have to get two rails and back them up to one another?

The Ckye Pod picatinny mount tolerances are pretty generous so it can accommodate rails that are out of spec. It has a good bit of wobble forward and aft. I tested it on a B&T, AI, BCM, and one other pic rail with varying results. The ARCA rail locks up much tighter than the Ckye Pod. Just food for thought.

Oddly enough, I ordered a sage green AX308 that should be here Thursday as well. I'm stoked. I've been wanting an AI for 12 years and I'm finally getting one.

Now I need to find the right back pack to carry it in.

Looking to order same color. Was the color darker than you expected, or just right? Any regrets going with Sage Green? Anyone else please comment on color you ordered and any regrets?

How does that Proof shoot? Does it like factory loads?

I haven’t put any rounds through it yet. My Bartlein shoots exceptionally well and I expect the same from this barrel. I will try and remember to post how it does.

I've only used Tab Gear rear bag as a front bag during comps until today. I knew it wasn't ideal but it got the job done. Finally decided to get a real front bag and got the pint sized GC and used it for the 1st time today during a match. Huge improvement not surprisingly. It's not too big but it's very solid.

Thanks. Yeah I did it myself more for function than looks. I could've def done a much better job if I took my time but didn't feel like spending 12hrs stippling a $30 part. The forend is lot less slippery now

I am going to remove the paint off my AW, I'm worried about melting or damaging the plastic skins does anyone have recommendations on how to go about this?

Kind of uneventful but that is a positive thing. My usual 140 Berger load is getting along with the Proof CF like it did with the Bartlein 5R. I’m using a Dead Air Nomad-30 suppressor (direct thread).

Finally broke out the 18” 308 barrel today for a quick 100y zero and some magneto numbers. Not too many rounds down the tube but enough to tell me I need to do more work with the 308! Amazing what recoil does when you’re being fundamentally lazy. Most every target was around 3/4-1 moa. Had one group that would have been 1/4-3/8ish but through the 4th round to make it right around 1 lol. Nothing worthy of a picture anyway. Was surprised with the consistency of 175 SMK FGMM ammo. 10 rounds was right around an SD of 10 and right at 2550. At first I didn’t even think that the longer 15.5” handguard wouldn’t allow me to to attach the magneto to the barrel but I figured it out and actually liked this setup a lot better!
