New to bolt action rifles and looking to get a AI AT, should I go with 308WIN or 6.5Creed Moore?

I know man but at the same time, he’s new and, while SH is the best resource out there, it can be overwhelming to a lot of people. This isn’t the bear pit and he’s acting the way someone who knows nothing about any of this usually does. It can be frustrating to answer/be constantly asked (seemingly) stupid questions, but we all started new at some point and all did or asked something stupid over the years.

Uh, there is such a thing as OJT along with reading and study. Requiring to be nursed by “education” (usually a keen grasp of the obvious) is a Democrat/Liberal/Socialist trait. Start off with a “home job” of AI AT chassis with a Remington Cheapie or up to 5R long range model and a Jewell Trigger set to 8 oz. plus a Sinclair bipod. Learn how to process cases and start reloading. My basic rifles have 32X Sightron scopes, although now I would prefer Vortex. By the way, this job was so old that I had to “mill” the extra clearance required for the Jewell Trigger extraordinarily tediously, but perfectly, with a drill press. I now have a mini-mill.

Me? Nooooo...I’ve got a lift in my shop. I also read the part where horizontal and vertical had to be laid out in this thread and whether or not muzzle threads affect accuracy and ain’t taking anything for granted LOL.

I just installed an Area 419 brake myself. All you need is some Rocksett and a wrench!
BTW, I was in the same position as the OP last January.
Never even knew this website existed.
Did some careful research and purchased an AX 6cm from Mile High in January, at what I think is a good price.
Found this website and watched a number of X-Ring YouTube videos.
Purchased Sphur mount and Leica PRS Scope, did all the mounting, sighting in myself, no problem as I have been shooting
all types of rifles for decades but wanted to use the new 200 yd range my Club is building and a local 300 yd range.
I have found early on that entering at the bottom is not for me in any endeavor.
Have Borka Tools set for mounting.
Got in on the Prime Group Buy for 6cm and found some other stuff for purchase.
Will purchase a set of dies and off I go after not reloading for many years.
I think the OP did what was good for him.

I feel superior on the basis of proven experience in the matters that I chose to comment upon. Nothing will do a shooter better than a copy of the Ballistic application, a mirage chart, the Beaufort wind chart and time at the club’s 600 yard range playing with wind corrections.

Get the AI
Get it in 6.5CM
Enjoy a great rifle and cartridge and the challenges of learning.
Get at least 18x on the scope for the high end.
Cutting muzzle threads on a quality blank does nothing to it but provides options in the future.

All depends at what ranges you're shooting and whether you want more, or slightly less recoil. if you can afford an AI you really shouldn't be worried about price and availability of ammo, or barrel life.

If he's worried about ammo prices after buying just the AT without glass, or if he should upgrade to the AX if "it is worth the extra $2500?" maybe he should go with more of a budget option like a Tikka, however if you can barely afford your ammo with your AI then maybe you need to consider downsizing too, how should I know, or why should I care what drives your budget and needs.

I think the only problem i have is you assuming that he can barely afford ammo.

I'm on the fence about buying a axsr right now or holding off. Guess what? My decision is based off of ammo prices and availability. That said, I'm not willing to pay $2/rd for Fed GMM 308win. If it was .67/rd like last time I stocked up, I would buy more. So i guess we all have that "what we are willing to pay" number in our head. I dont want to be at the mercy of availability/cost when I buy ammo. I'd rather buy what I want at a price I'm willing to pay.

Quite frankly you don't have anything with me as availability in local stores is right now the same for .308 and 6.5 CM - nil!
I was simply replying to the OP to base his decision on the metrics of what range he expects to generally shoot at. None of us like to pay through the nose for ammo but price is based on supply and demand and for the foreseeable future to expect huge price drops regardless of caliber seems an exercise in futility. I don't care what rifle, or caliber you buy, or if you can afford it, as I'm not willing to chip in, my answer was to the OP .

Am new here too op. Am waiting on my GAP for the next couple of months but I will say have to admire your ability to just pull the trigger on whatever needed to get up and going. I can't decide on rings, scope, sling, bag, tripod, Binos, ballistics calc, kestrol, mat, or suppressor. It truly seems like you are already partying while I am waiting on my aged bourbon to turn out perfect. Tip of the hat.

I got the Pinnacle production 6 creed. Plan was to dip toes in this pond but not how it works with this hobby. Have a local guy I am going to do a hunting build with but couldn't pass up the price point on the GAP.
