300 PRC update

I'm testing loads using Ramshot Magnum powder. It's probably not as popular as RL26 or H1000 which is why I might have been able to pick up a couple of pounds when the more well known powders were out of stock.
I am just getting into the long range game so not as experienced as almost everyone else here. However my 1st set of loads with Magnum did look good.
I tried it on my 300WM. Did not like it much. To temp sensitive. Probably my fault but I haven't tried it since.

Yeah as I said I am a noob to precision reloading, and as I have a couple pounds of this I'm going to use it as I learn other aspects of the sport .
Im still pretty new as well. I had a decent load worked up when it was around freezing and then was doing seating depth testing when it warmed up to around 70. Well you saw what the results looked like. Not good. I had to use needle nose pliers to extract a case.

What a cluster fuck that was.

Currently waiting on my rifle and looking for RL26, N565, N568 and 215M primers.....at this rate even waiting on Bartlein barrels is gonna be quicker than finding powder and primers!

Just out of curiosity I put N565 and N568 into GRT using 26inch tube and 230 A-tips. According to GRT N565 gets to about 94.5% burn and N568 to about 92.5% burn. RL26 gets to 100% after only about a foot of barrel, again accord to GRT.

Interesting thing to me is that folks on here have been saying they get basically the same performance from n565 as rl26......time and testing will tell I guess.

Ive noticed that powders tend to not only drop in batches by brand (ie if one VV powder drops somewhere, there will be others there too) but also batches by dealer indicating a shipment has made it to the US. So when RL26 dropped at PV, it also dropped at Reloading Unlimited the same day or within 24 hrs. When 8133 dropped at PV it also dropped at Precision Reloading the same day etc. So if Midsouth had some 565 maybe it will drop other places this week.

Today I was down in an old coal strip mine area of SE KY near Hazard. I shoot the second firing on the 375 Ruger Brass with RL-26 and Berger 245gr EOL's. I was with some 6.5cm guys and we only set up to 1325 yards. 10" plate wasn't all that difficult....but the milk jug gave me a few misses until I got it dialed in. The consistency vertically was very good. Shooting across such a wild change in terrain....maybe 6 changes of a 100 feet or more over that distance....even if the wind was dead to you...and dead at the target...you still had multiple wind speeds and direction....but my misses were just barely off target until I got dialed in...and then it was Auto-Magic. The 245 EOL's showed they can do very well.

Only pushed them around 2820 today (40F). I'll speed them up a bit. I wanted to see the stability at longer ranges...but I can go to TVP soon and see how they perform at 1mile+. The converted 375 Ruger brass showed excellent vertical spreads. This was all done in the old 'burned out' barrel that is now sitting at close to 1500 rounds. These rounds were not tuned to this barrel. I was shooting without an ATS tuner.....and seating depths were just magazine length....not tuned to this particular barrel....which is about 1.5 inches shorter than my new barrel.

Was a good day to get out of the house and go shoot with some guys and have fun.

Any RCC brass users have some max loads with RL26 and 230gn Berger’s? Going to pressure test tomorrow since I finally got my hands on some RL26.

Went out to the hills (BLM) with @BFuller today to throw some Berger 230s (and 105s in my 6 BRA) out to 1525. @b2lee - I hit another dead center shot on one of the legs - I'm getting pretty good at this. At least this one punched through the galvanized steel...

Some serious jumps in velocity with only .5 grains...that last one was a dozy.

I'd like to see some 5 shot groups at 73.0 grains....working with some different seating depths... Being Winter and all....anything above that...may get you in trouble when things start to heat up outside.

Grab you some 245 Berger EOL's when you can....they are very jump tolerant....seems to group well with decent swings in seating depth.

Remind me what velocity you're pushing those 245s?

Currently I'm running them slow.... 2820 to 2840....depending on the temperature. When it is freezing or below... 2820fps. I'll work up a load soon to get them to the low 2900's safely without working my brass too hard.

Curious, what’s the COAL of your 245 loaded round?

Thanks.

I have a clear node at 74.6grs of RL26 and the H225 @ 2869. I'm going to load some at 75.8 - 76.6 (.2gr increments) to try and see if there is a low 2900fps node.

I read through this thread awhile ago and can't remember what primers folks have been using? FED 210M, 215M; CCI BR2, 250?

I've used both FED 210M, 215M and didn't notice a difference in my limited (under 500 rounds) shooting.

Right now.....shoot what you can find....unless you are shooting 1 mile benchrest...you won't notice a difference. I get better SD/ES with 215M's.....and it only matters when trying to shoot groups at ELR distances.

Mile High has 225gr Hornady 300 PRC in stock. Bad news it's $75 a box. Worse news is this price may be the new norm as Freedom Munitions had H225 this morning at $80. I realize that's only two data points, but the listed retail has been going from $39 to $46 to $62 and now $75. Glad I can also reload.

It will depend on how much anti gun stuff Biden can push through. Things may come back, but it will take a year or more for things to shake out.
We have all seen these shortages in the past when a Dem gets elected, but I don't ever remember it being this bad.

What worries me is us normal people can't fathom the length and breadth Giffords/Harris/Bloomberg etc., want to take gun control. Washington State will probably pass a high capacity mag ban this year. Ones you own are OK, but you can't take them out of your house, thus making them useless. Talk up here (DC area) is Biden wants to end all ammo and component mail order sales. Let that one sink in...

Is the Hornady match ammo any good?
The factory 225 ELDM Match ammo shot some sub .5 groups and I took it out and hit 1000 yard 8inch disk with it all day. You do notice a larger SD/ES if you shoot enough, and the 225 ELDM isn't as consistent as something like a Berger but it'll work for most applications. I bought 100 rounds to break in my barrel before load development and was pleased.

Been following this 300 PRC thread for a while.

I have a 26” CF Bartlein Barrel on order (since the end of June...) with a 9.5 twist rate. I am a hunter, but shoot at steel a fair amount (~2000 rounds per year) out to 1300 m. The 300 prc was bought ostensibly for elk, but that tends to be 1 week a year, leaving steel for the other 51 weeks.

I plan on mostly shooting 205 gr Berger Hybrid hunting rounds, but I like to test out different bullets and loads. I will probably stick to Bergers as I have had really good luck with them out of my 260 Rem, but I like to experiment.

I also load pretty conservatively, so I won’t be getting anything close to 3000 fps+ with heavier bullets.

So my question is whether you think the 9.5 twist rate will work well for what I want. It seems to stabilize well up to 220 gr, but then become marginal at more bullet weight.

Earlier I saw that Dave Tooley was going with 9.5, so that is reassuring, but this is my first “custom” rifle, and I don’t want to mess it up.
I ran my 10 twist proof carbon (225 eldm) in gulfport miss (sea level) no issues stability is good💪

Haven' shot the match but I've shot the 212eldx Hornady ammo thru my 26" Proof barrel carbon PRC, shoots great, will stack them when I do my part. Have shot them too 1000yds. Surprised at the quality for factory ammo.

Mile High still has the Match in stock and Sportsman has some of the 212s.

300 PRC - Not a great price.

What ammo cans are you guys using? I've been looking around at my LGS etc. and haven't found anything decent.

ADG boxes. They're the only thing i've found that'll fit the 230 A tips seated out to .010 jump without too much jostle.

Anyone running 230 A-Tips with H1000? I am at 76.5gr in ADG brass and only getting 2750 fps. Seems low, no?

MTM R100-MAG
I pulled out the holder and cut (actually drilled) off the little fingers that hold the bullet tips so I can put them in pointing up.

Finally got my 300 PRC put together. Here she is.

MPA BA Ultralite
24” Proof Carbon prefit
Bighorn Origin LA
TT special
PA hyper tap brake
Still waiting on the Vortex AMG, will use my USO MR-10 in the mean time.

Second order of business:

B2Lee or anyone else, have you experience any issues with “clickers” as described by Alex Wheeler et. al., here:

And here:

I am still waiting on my Lapua brass to start working a load up and breaking in the barrel so I have no experience with the issue but it appears that a fair number of people in those threads have. I will be watching closely for it.

If anyone has 20 pieces of new brass they’d be willing to part with, I’d be willing to pay you whatever it’s worth, just so I can get a load spun up in time for spring bear.

I have 50 new Hornady brass if you're interested.

I have sized my ADG brass and other Hornady with both Redding bushing dies and a custom honed Forster. I have had very good luck with both without any strange issues. I struggled when I was using Dillon case lube and one shot, since I moved to rcbs lube with a pad I have had no issue.

In case anyone is interested, EuroOptic has AXMC, .308 bolt face, SFP, complete bolt assemblies in stock in Pale Brown and Sage Green.

I could have gone with the 300WM that came with my AI, but nooooooo, I had to get all uppity and go 300PRC because I didn't want to be paying 300NM prices. ;)
