MOA vs Mil

I hit ignore on this 450+ posts ago. I come back to check it out and on page 11 we’re still talking yards and inches for MOA adjustment.....I see I haven’t missed much!

I typically lay the moniker of 'genius' on someone who sees something no one else does and it's a bellwether moment....game changer to the benefit of a skill or pursuit. Now I may be on an island here, but going to go ahead and say this thread will not bestow the aforementioned moniker on the OP as time goes on. But who knows NF may introduce the 'chickon1' cluster bang 5-25 with WTF reticle ranging and we are all saying 'heck yea I was there when he dropped that knowledge bomb how'd we miss it?'

Well, if people would actually read, this was the only point I was trying to make. Turned into all kinds of other shit..and I don't use it verify often unless I'm just winging a zero or distance. Since MOA uses yards and inches, it makes it that much easier.

How do you know how big something is to wing your range?

@armorpl8chikn picture of one of @Bigfatcock girls in post 478 is a great example. You still using the armys taught shoulder to shoulder 19-21" estimate for your target size in inches from that picture lol how about 36-39" inches beltline to top of head?

Only way those formulas are accurate is if the target size in linear measurement is known, if not your guessing.... but you know that already.

Knowing how to use the math and when to use the math is just as important.

its not 1980 anymore... Range finders are no longer a two man load out that only work a few times with horrible battery life.

But why tho? Wtf are you doing math on target?

I don't think he has a laser range finder.

Kaaaaaannee time!!

You guys are still going on about reticles and shit. Funny. Last time for the visual learners. Maybe someone will be like ooooo..but probably not. Especially 308P.

Just in case.. for 308P
/ means divide.
x mean multiply
( ) means do this shit in here first then multiply

Constant input of meters-metric. See less math.
adjustment in mrad = subtention in mm/range in meters
distance in meters = target in mm / angle in mrad

Constant of yards and inches
Yards to Target / 100 = inches per MOA adjustment at that distance
Inches of Adjustment Needed / Size of 1 MOA Chunk in Inches = MOA adjustment

Mixed input. See more math.
distance in yards = (target in inches / angle in mrad) x 27.78
distance in meters = (target in inches / angle in mrad) x 25.4

Okay what is it you are trying to figure out with this math.

Well, if people would actually read, this was the only point I was trying to make. Turned into all kinds of other shit..and I don't use it verify often unless I'm just winging a zero or distance. Since MOA is referenced with yards and inches, it makes it that much easier.

So, your entire point is that math that doesn’t matter is easier with moa?

Bold strategy.

I honestly thought you were a guy named Matt.
Matt was one of them computer engineers. Matt argued with me about something I had done for 33 years, for a living, a 33 year career.
And do you know why he thought he knew more than me?
Because he installed the SCADA system in a facility similar to mine.
Matt was immediately labeled a complete moron by other people, who had previously thought him a really smart guy.
You didn't have to be that guy, but somehow, you just gotta be right. I expect you can't help it though. You probably have ass burgers or something.
Guess we all know one...

Ding Ding Ding Ding. You win the, lets read and comprehend prize. Pretty sure I said that about 20 times now but people literally say there is no math, mils isn't based on the metric system, and continue to go on and on with shit I agree with that has nothing to do with what I am saying.

Okay, that wins the blue ribbon for concise summarization and reply during the First Annual SH MOA vs MIL Festival.

Well done Sir.

You won the I’m bored prize. Be less of an asshole in a week.

Anyone ever wonder why we still describe the accuracy of a rifle by saying 1 MOA or 1/2 MOA. Couldn't we say this rifle shoots .1 mil or .3 mils ?
I measure my group size in inches, but not through my fucking scope.

That was said a long time ago in this thread but your hubris blinded you from seeing it and instead you go on arguing about inconsequential topics to try and make yourself feel smart.

I’ll bet you’re a hoot at the local gun store with all the other fudds

Hi,

You guys better hide, lol.....real deal here....Joint Special Forces......

But at least his trash can lid is closed, lol

View attachment 7558446

So he is retired CW4 at the ripe young age of 44 years old....GOOD on him if that is the case but now is an Engineer???
View attachment 7558453

And how does an Engineer not know how the physics of flame, smoke and airflow work???

Sincerely,

This dude has said "network engineer" a number of times so I'm thinking more like commo technician.

We tried multiple times to talk him down onto the landing strip. But after awhile... it just became too much fun.

Sorry to have caused a problem. But damn, some of this was pure gold!

Dthomas knows. He was the one that moved it from Ballistics Calculator to the Bear Pit. He does that sometimes to make it more sporting.

I think somewhere along the way in this 11 pages, he finally "got it" and understood what people were trying to get through to him, but his ego wouldn't let him admit that he didn't understand it in the beginning. So, his argument slowly morphed to make it sound like he was arguing something else.

His statement early on about calling a miss for a shooter as "3 in. low", and the shooter (using a mil scope) looks at him like, "WTF? because the math is more difficult" was the most telling of his incomprehension. No, the shooter is looking at you like "WTF?" because he wants a new spotter who knows how to call. He kept circling back to calling misses in inches. I never saw him explain how he measured those inches from 500 (or whatever) yards away. We all know you have to use a reticle, and the only way to get inches from a reticle is to do a completely useless math conversion and convert the units he measured with the reticle (whether mil or MOA) into a DIFFERENT unit (inches) that is also completely useless to the shooter because it requires ANOTHER completely un-necessary conversation BACK to "whichever" units are on the scope. He just couldn't grasp the stupidity of calling a miss in inches, or why you would never do that.

Oh I’m sure he thought/thinks the “math” was much more important than it is. Probably thinks reticle ranging is still more important than a utility/legacy skill as well.

Like I said, one of the easiest ways to identify a non shooter.
