Rifle Scopes New Razor????

They’ve entered a territory where reticle preference wins. Competing against the thought process of “well at this point I can get a k525, an ATACR, or spring the full extra G for a ZCO” was an interesting choice. In the end though, they’ll still be a few bucks cheaper and it’s gonna be a great optic whether the haters (myself included at times) like it or not. Even a small improvement in glass will be nice, combined with that parallax at 10 yards, and the new zero stop will turn some folks on (the g2 zero stop was literally why I sold mine a while back). It’s gonna take a little while but you’ll be grabbing these for $2500 soon enough.

So you have time to grab a barrel and possibly a bolt and install it, but not an Allen wrench? Hmm
You would think that it wouldn't be an issue but youd be suprised.
One day I'll buy a set of fix it stick to keep with my shooting gear, untill then i'll contiune to forget the correct size allen key.....

You mustn't have used a tool less zero scope as it's one of those things that is far more convient that it sounds on paper.

So buy a bunch of the right one. Here is the size for the gen 3.
HONJIE 2.5mm Hex Key Wrench L Shaped Hexagon Head Repairing Tool 20pcs …

Or get a few of these.

Or this set. Even comes in packs of 100 or 250.

Thanks, i'll do that now.
Think I'll buy 100 of them and place them all around the house, and at least 10 in each car I own.

Still not as convient as tool less but guess it'll have to do.

Everyone asking about the reason for tool-less zero has clearly never zeroed a Gen 2 razor lol
That was probably the only thing about my G2 I didn’t care for. No tool-less zero on the G3, but I can appreciate that vortex made the zeroing process of the G3 a little more simplified.

I must be the only one who was never bothered by the Gen2 Razor zeroing process.

That having been said, the Gen3 is a notable improvement. Really nice turrets.

You are not the only one. I like that the Gen3 is much quicker but kept the same concept of getting a perfect zero

I am looking forward to reading your review on this. Is there any chance that you might be able to compare it to the upcoming ZCO 8-40 once any potential NDA has been lifted?

I think the zero process on a G2 is super simple. If 3 Allen screws are a big deal maybe those folks should take up computer checkers.

I have not laid eyes on the 8-40x ZCO and the way it is going I can not accept any more scopes for review for a few months at least.

Thank you for the in depth review @koshkin it definitely enlightened me a little. Maybe not enough to get me to spring for one. But it definitely opened my eyes up a bit when you say NF and Kahles should be concerned and so should ZCO. I will have to keep an eye on it.

The 3k price is lower then I thought they would be honestly. If it's any sort of upgrade from the G2 optically, they aren't going to keep these things on the shelf very long.

Anyone that doesn't like the color can have @CSTactical cerakote it. They do amazing work with cerakote. They have done a few ZCOs, Schmidt, and a Kahles for me. All came out perfect. If I get one of these G3s that's what I'll be doing.

To be fair, the Tangent Theta has the best toolless design IMHO and it is convenient. Do all scopes need to be toolless, that would be nice but not necessary - I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it is more expensive to make a good toolless design, so any company looking to make the product more cost effective is probably going to toss that idea out pretty quick. That said, what I do like about the new L-TEC+ is the exposed infinite adjustment plate on top - for my switch barrel AI here's what I'm thinking, I can take a marker and identify the zero for each barrel (on both elev and wind plates), that way, when I swap a barrel I already have an indication of where it needs to be set.
This is what I did with the tangents I had. Tho I documented the info in my phone as I did not want to mark up the turrets.

I suspect it has nothing to do with inflation and more to do with getting the prices close to upsell a handful of prospective buyers.
Nothing to do with inflation? Are you kidding? What planet have you been living on for the past year? 🤠

All kidding aside, are their really consumers out there oblivious to what has happened to the supply chain over the past two years? I have seen my costs for materials jump from 30 - 110 % and that’s when I can get product and raw materials……

I know there is inflation and quite a bit of it. But, the cost of an 8 year old scope didn't go up 25% only because of inflation when the remainder of their line only increased around 10% and the 3-18 G2 is being blown out for 1300. It only makes sense to bump the cost of the G2 up, they'll probably get a handful of people to look at the differences and pay the extra $500 for a G3.

I know there is inflation and quite a bit of it.
Math is hard……

I just raised a product 25%. My cost when up 50%. It has been my best seller for 20 years.

Some products I have not raised yet. Others I have raised more to make up for the deficit on the above product.

The global supply chain is screwed right now. Consumers need to get their head out of their proverbial arses and realize that 2022 is the year they are likely to see this passed on in a big way.

If something has not gone up, count your lucky stars rather than thinking 1+2=3. Some products may just have existing stock that is being sold off before a price increase.

It is always a combination of different things. I am sure Vortex wants people to buy the new scope, but there is a reason they are not discontinuing Gen2. It is still a great scope and they know how to make it consistently.
The costs have definitely gone up and they have gone up on everything, not just materials: manufacturing, shipping costs, etc. It all adds up.
Once direct costs are accounted for, they still need to make some sort of a profit on it: that is what pays everyone's salaries and funds R&D.
Fundamentally though, the price is set by the market. No matter what Vortex wants to get paid, if the price is not competitive, sales will go down and they will have to adjust.
Personally, I think the prices on Gen2 and Gen3 Razors are fairly reasonable given the market conditions and competing product prices, but time will tell.

But in the other side of that is really smart to drop a $3k scope in this market? I get that it cost more inflation supply chain etc, timing is really important, and why said earlier that the other 6-36x56 scopes with Japanese glass will take buyers or make them think do I REALLY need these features for an extra $1200….

That depends on how you look at it and, ultimately, the market will decide.
I suspect they will not be able to keep it in stock for a year or two, but if I am wrong they'll have to drop the price.

I think the G3 is going to be a smash hit. I don't know how the G2 will do up against the G3 for $500 more or the Mk5 for $500 less.

Time and the consumers will tell.

ZCO is dropping a 8-40 for well over $4K so it’s just an assumption that the Vortex won’t be worth $3k. Wait to see it.

I bet Vortex sells the hell out of this scope. I like the new turrets, and the way it zeros. I had Gen 2 that I thought was a lot of scope for the money. I liked the way you zeroed it. To my eyes it had better glass than a MK 5 3.6-18.

Mark5 with the PR2 and PR1 reticles is definitely a very strong contender especially if you do not care about reticle illumination. That keeps the price down quite a lot.

It is entirely possible that if Leupold keeps the price of the Mark 5 steady, Vortex' price increases will help their market share.

This whole dynamic between Razor, Mark 5 and ATACR is really interesting. ATACR is in a somewhat different price category and they have probably the most dedicated fanboys (easily one of the most successful marketing campaigns) of any brand, but this should put a good bit of pressure on them. Razor Gen3 is coming just after Leupold finally got their reticle situation squared away, so we now have Mark 5 5-25x56 and 7-35x56, ATACR 5-25x56 and 7-35x56, Razor Gen3 6-36x56 and a couple of others really going after the same buyer. Add Leica PRS 5-30x56 and US Optics FDN25x hovering near there as well.

The dark horse is Burris, of course, and with all the people hinting that Burris is about to release something, I would not be surprised if it is something relevant to this category.

I am going to have all sorts of fun with this.

Koshkin's livestream and Bill's quick thoughts on it pushed me to buy it for a 22LR. If it turns out to be a disappointment I can sell it without loosing my shirt and then buy a ZCO 8-40.

I got the new Burris out this morning. First time I've had it out on a nice sunny day. Its impressive.

I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts Ilya on where you think it sits in relation to the new G3 and its peers.. I'm hearing its a little different price point, but I'm not sure exactly where its landed. I agree, it will be fun playing with these..

Lots of exciting products coming out. I'm bummed I can't get to Shot this year.

I like the new EBR-7D reticle. They cleaned the 7C reticle up quite a bit, it was unnecessarily busy. Much cleaner lines now. It may be on par with Leupold's PR2 reticle (my favorite). And I agree, they're gonna sell plenty of these. Hopefully the glass is on par with the mid-top tier scopes. I'll be interested to see how it stacks up with the 7-35 MK5 at about $1k more

I don't mind the brown color but Vortex is just stupid for not offering razors in black. They've got to miss out on a lot of sales due to their loyalty to that color. It can make a sexy rifle ugly.

I just pinged Burris folks about that scope. I have not seen the final version, so I can't form too many opinions. I liked the prototype enough to add it to my schedule.
