Top scope brand that costs 4k+ keeps cracking

I'm pretty sure I could stick the scope tube on pretty much any scope in a hydraulic press and completely crush it and the ocular lense would remain unbroken. Why? Because the ocular lense sits in the eye piece which is separate from the main tube! Any of you geniuses want to point out how squishing on the main tube with a pair of rings puts any stress at all on the ocular lense?

I'm pretty sure I can press anything at anytime in anything and get any kind of result you want.

Pics or it didn't happen. I find this hard to believe that not only one, but two alpha grade scopes broke in the ocular area in ARC rings. Send them shits back to ARC and see if they will provide a replacement set. Kinda sus...

Anatomy-of-a-Scope-3.jpg

I've got 6 scopes (5 different brands of top tier scopes) mounted in 6 different sets of ARC M10 rings. All of them are torqued to 50 in lbs on the rail and ring screws. Never had any issues with them breaking a scope.

I had the m10 ring /m5xi Steiner on 338lm doesn’t have any issue for 2 years. Maybe my Steiner is not a 4k scope

As others have said, I'd recommend you send the rings with the scope...

Were these the first set of rings and scope on that rifle?

Something is out of alignment or spec- have you measured the pic rail for geometry, and is it an integrated rail or screwed on? It can only be three things- the pic rail, the rings, or the scope.

After you get the scope back I'd be curious to know what happens if you use a different mount or rings.

Stupid question the mount says leave a gap, are you torquing to spec and it’s not leaving the gap?

A picture is worth 1,000,000 words spread across 100 comments.

No one can really help you without seeing the whole picture man. Posting a pic of your TT with a ZCO in a 45 offset isn’t going to tarnish these brands…and if it’s not actually a $4k optic but rather a $400 Strike Eagle, no one will give a shit.

Worse things have been said about every brand imaginable on this site. Your experiences aren’t going to effect sales numbers or reputation.

Post pics and give specs…otherwise this optic thread in the rifle section is just taking up bandwidth.

WTF, how can the rings crack an ocular lens?

Possibilities:
1) The OP is full of shit
2) Lens cracked due to contact with something.
3) Thermal Shock.
4) Tolerance stackup between lens and housing.
5) Bad machining.
6) Foreign object in tube.
7) Chineseium ED glass.

And some others I cant think of.

Going from hot to cold
Just curious, how big of a temperature difference? Did the other (unbroken) scope go through the same fluctuation? Extreme temp swings + recoil = brittle glass? Maybe?

Or maybe they had a bad batch or ocular lenses and you were unfortunate to receive two of them? That’s the nice thing about buying expensive shit… they typically stand behind the warranty

You I trust. Am I wrong? What does he recommend?
Yes you're wrong. ARC rings torque is 55in lbs. Right in ARC directions.. exactly what I have mine torqued to as well...the top ring is 55in lbs.. we arent talking about ring to base...

I’m with the other who question how clamping the body of a scope can cause any issues to the ocular. It would seem something else is going on. I guess it’s possible something in the tube is coming lose and hitting the lens. Possibly from a malformed ring but I would also suspect you’d see signs of damage on the tube if that were the case.

I think the suggestion of sending the mount with the scope to be tested at their facility if a good idea. Not sure if they could simulate your temp swings.

Quick question on that, if the temp swing is substantial how are you keeping your lenses from fogging with condensation?

I mean I can't tell you how many 1000s of times I've shot room temp guns immediately into 0F-20F Temps and never had a scope or glass break...you would think even more so that would never happen on a mystery named $4k optic...

Oh and I'm gonna bank on something else is the cause....not the optic or rings unless THAT specific set of rings you have are out of spec. Too many people use ARC rings for them to be the issue as a whole.... and the scope being repaired and you breaking it again....its something else your doing. Maybe not intentionally, but something...

Names or this thread is stupid as hell.

I don't know which lens. He was at a major match, laid down to confirm zero before the match and on the third round a giant crack formed in his field of view. He sent it back and they took care of him. You probably know the dude, he runs all the pikes peak matches.
Interesting. I'll have to ask him about it when I go down there on the 12th

I have m10 or. M-brace mounts with vortex rzr gen3, mk5hd, kahles k624i, and atacr 5-25. Friends run them with zco, and mk5hd. All torqued to spec of 55"/#. Never an issue. I did have my 338 rum moving the scope on the rings because of recoil and huge brake, afte talks to Ted, we came up with a solution, not a problem since. This is NOT a mount problem, this is a scope problem with brandX. And the fact this thread even started without a forthcoming brand name, is complete horseshit.

I agree this is a useless thread but the OP probably doesn't want to say because there's always a gang of guys ready to flame someone for saying anything remotely bad about their pet brand

But that's anything in life isn't it?? You're always gonna have fanboys and haters...I don't think that's isolated to SH...if he can't handle or deal with that...then he should probably delete this thread..just sayin.

This thread reminds me of a person who takes their car to a mechanic (or posts online) about this tapping sound that they hear. What is the tapping sound... Muffler bearings?
