The step in the barrel for the collar is very small and will not look funny without the collar (IMHO). Many 18" barrels with rifle gas have the step. If you want to make it a Mk12 clone, then you will want the correct rail from PRI or KAC and also the Ops Inc brake not the Lantac. Your call...

I personally prefer an 18", but I don't need the slight increase in velocity of the 20. I prefer the weight and length savings of the 18. An 18" with rifle length gas is very soft shooting.

Sorry, haven't seen any Barrett uppers in stock. Depending on what you like for specific features, some of the usual suspects for quality are BCM, Daniel Defense, KAC, and Noveske. Just pick the upper you want from any of them and it should be good to go. I can't speak to piston uppers if...

The SS410 barrel is definitely the way to go for accuracy, I just wasn't sure if he was only interested in the 14.5" barrels. Can't really go wrong either way.

Definitely put White Oak on the short list. You can also get into a BCM SS410 complete upper for about $1200. There are others but I would start with these personally. If you would consider building or having someone else build for you, you could select your own barrel, which may open up more...

Noveske seems to be working hard to get their new Gen 3 uppers/rifles out, so I would guess all the NSRs are going toward the uppers. They have been selling some of their rarer barrels, so that may be a good sign that they are catching up (or a bad sign that they have more barrels than NSRs) . . .

No argument from me on your points. LMT can occasionally be found on sale for 10-20% of from some venders, but day to day, they are more expensive. However, if someone prefers LMT for some reason, it's still a quality option. (For the record, I don't own LMT and am not recommending them over...

One company I don't think I have heard mentioned yet is LMT. A Colt, BCM, Daniel Defense, or LMT would be a great first (and forever) rifle/carbine. Colt seems to have the lowest prices at the moment, but any of those that fit your budget and preferences would be an excellent choice.
