I can't believe how effective this load is out to a mile! I'll put together an actual thread with pics after I go through my notes (tomorrow), but had to bump this for anyone following along. Shane has made the 308 my favorite cartridge with this.
I worked up a copy of Shane's load & love it. 208 amax's over 48.5 gr R17 in CBC brass (it was free!), br2's, 3.000" (revised to 3.004") COAL, no moly (maybe later), and 2640 fps with occasional primer pressure on hot days/long strings. i've shot it to 1200 with big grins, and will hopefully be...
Sounds crazy, but it works for me I can't claim to know as much as most of these guys, but I recently picked up a Tikka 308. My load development has been pretty darned short, so likely of no help. I loaded a ladder of 208 amaxes over reloader 17 (48gr- 50 gr on half grain increases) seated at...
i feel for ya ;) , but i haven't proven if it actually does work for me at 1k- looks promising so far. i'm guessing thesheepdog's twist rate is 1 in 10" (seems to be the most common for Savage .308 barrels), and i haven't a clue where he lives, but JBM gives it a green light at sea level...
ar loads get seated to mag length, handgun loads- if it feeds, and goes out the front of the barrel somewhat predictably i'm happy. i don't push hot loads through a handgun, though. everything else goes through powder type, charge weight, & seating depth testing
i don't have a Savage, but i've been playing around with 208 amax's for a month or two now in my Tikka. i haven't had the opportunity to test at 1k+, but the 208's are staying under .7 moa out to 430 yards at my elevation (DA has ranged from 4200-8500). now that i've modified my bolt stop to mag...
I drank the koolaid After picking up a Tikka 308 varmint last week I decided to give this a try since mag length will not be a problem ;). Just like previously mentioned, I saw big changes in mv with each .5 grain increase until it plateaued at 49 grains- just under 2700fps & the...
Re: 338 Federal I've been doing research on this for a few months too. The quick pro/con list I've generated is: Pro- Great terminal performance at close range (338 is kind of a magic number for elk) Most 338 fed bullets ar better in the wind than standard hunting weight 308 bullets (that's...
Re: Archery question bow for 10 yr old Mathews genesis. http://m.mathewsinc.com/product/genesis/?subpage=specs If he likes it, you can get him into a hunting bow later
Re: short range kill with long range gun... A lot of the old timers talk about calibers that kill critters better than paper. 30-30's are devastating at the right range- that's what got me interested in the 338 federal. Partitions will open up at 1600 fps, so why the obsession with pushing...
I'm looking to get into a short/mid range elk rifle & so far I'm leaning toward a lightweight AR 10 in either 308 (with 200 grain partitions), or maybe a 338 federal (200-225 grain bullets). Before I go crazy with it I figured I'd be wise to find out how many of you have experience with either...
Re: short range kill with long range gun... paul- thanks! stellar shot on your bull btw! rokbuster- the bullet barely slowed down. i expected damage, but it went in between ribs & came out between ribs- not much damage at all. i knew there were risks with 300smk's, but felt confident that...
last spring i picked up this Savage 111LRH in 338 Lapua thinking i'd focus on long range hunting. i spent many hours working on the gun & mucho $$ doping it out to 1k...... then i shot this raghorn at less than 75 yards. i seem to either see no elk, or have them walk right over the top of me...
Re: Scope $200 to 300 range http://www.cameralandny.com/optics/vortex.pl?page=vortexviper2-7x32 I picked one of these up this summer & gotta say it's a great scope for the money.
Re: Savage rifle is not free floated i had the same issue with my 111. i widened the barrel channel and still had too much forend flex (when i loaded the bipod, i could still get contact), so i extended the channels from the sides of the bedding block forward, sunk two sections of carbon...
