Re: 25-300win mag imp (The Big Nasty)
Well, I don't post on here much, but I feel I have to address this topic, as I've heard the same thing MANY times over on several different forums when talking about several different projects of mine. Here is the latest project I got flamed on every time I posted something about it.
My Dad, who is in his mid '70's shoots a rifle that I got together two years ago for him in 25-7mm. It shoots absolutely amazing! Even with his old eyes, he can shoot in the high .2's to mid .3's with it at 100 yards. Neither I, nor my son can do any better than that. I do his reloading and I just started with 257 Wby data and watched the pressure signs. In the course of a year, he shoots an elk, an antelope (Montana), a blacktail, and a few coyotes with it. If he can see it, and establish all the atmospherics, (range, wind, cosign, etc.) it's a one shot deal. It took me a couple hundred rounds for load development. At the current rate of fire, (max of 10 rounds per year), this rifle with it's "short barrel life" will last him unil he is over 116 years old. If I can shoot a hunting rifle every year for 30+ years before I "burn out the barrel", well so be it, I'll have to order another barrel.
I've got so much flak for the caliber of this rifle, (and others I've done), that ranged from "there is already a 257 Wby that will do the same thing" comments, to "it will burn out a barrel every 250 rounds". I just get sick of people going out of there way to try to quell someone elses excitement about a new project!
If you want a 25-300wm, I say GO FOR IT! Have fun and let us know how it works out. Good luck and keep us posted! Just remember...be patient with your load development.
