I have been wanting a bad to the bone overbore caliber and while at the local gunsmith which is a very good friend he showed me this particular reamer he had aquired. If i decide to do this it will be on a savage action with a 28"pipe. let the comments role but please do not give me barrel life complaints as i know 5-600rnds is all i get.

personally, id stay away from that. If you want a "barrel burner" just go with the 6.5x284. Much better bullet selection. Much more known. it will be much easier to find load data for it. Plus you will look like you know what you are doing.

I dont know if your gonna get many good comments, 5-600 rnd barrel life almost seems stupid.
Also, what will this Big Nasty do that a 300WM wont do much better, cheaper, and for a long time compared to your 5-600 rnd estimate?

ETA: wouldn't a .264 Mag do something similar to what you want? With the addition of being a standardized cartridge, and better bullet selection?

Re: 25-300win mag imp (The Big Nasty)

Actually it is not much bigger than a 257 weatherby and what fun is it to have the common wildcats think out of the box and punch in a bullet bc of.418 and velocity of about 3700 in the calculator.

Re: 25-300win mag imp (The Big Nasty)

I wouldn't own anything in .257 because of the lack of good bullet selection. You can do better in either a .243 or .264 bore. 22/243 Middlestead gets some pretty good velocities and that is in a short action. I say do 243-300 Mag improved shooting 105 class bullets. THAT would be pretty cool. .257 is disgusting.

Re: 25-300win mag imp (The Big Nasty)

Ok i see im sending the wrong message this is not for shooting 1000 yards on the bench. I shoot a 260 for that. This is for hunting were my longest shot is 500yds and you have to be real fast because i predator hunt and deer hunt it will not be shot a lot. Here is calculator results shooting 110 accubonds at 3700fps with rifle zero at 350.

243-300mag has crossed my mind but 6mm bullets are not constructed heavy enough for this guns application

Do you really think that the difference between 3700FPS and 3200FPS will make a difference between getting your game or loosing it? They must have much faster animals in Missouri than here. And a 28 inch barrel wouldn't lend itself to fast come-ups.

Plus, in the event of you hitting a deer at half that distance it sounds like you would ruin a lot of the meat with that velocity. And I understand that Accubonds dont perform well when pushed fast, which could result in a massively wounded deer that isn't recovered. For coyotes on the other hand, it would be awesome to pop them with said energy.

Sorry, I dont want to come across as a buzzkill, you can obviously do what you want. I'm just trying to give some constructive criticism to see if there's a better way.

Re: 25-300win mag imp (The Big Nasty)

Strictly for hunting, I can see where you are coming from. I take it you are looking for something to basically be able to hold dead on out to 400 yards. I would still go with a .264 bore, and something more practical, like a 6.5 WSM or 6.5x284. You could probably push the 120 grain bullets pretty fast. I shot a doe a couple weeks back at 393 yards with a 123 A-Max doing 2700 fps out of a 6.5x55. Then again I used a rangefinder and had time to dial in the 2.1 mils required at that range.

Re: 25-300win mag imp (The Big Nasty)

I do not know about the 25-300win but I know a guy with a 257-STW which is a little bigger and that is pushing 100gr Ballistic Tips at 3900fps + with a 28inch barrel. The rifle shoots great and he uses it for deer hunting and coyotes and it is very flat shooting.

Re: 25-300win mag imp (The Big Nasty)

Well, I don't post on here much, but I feel I have to address this topic, as I've heard the same thing MANY times over on several different forums when talking about several different projects of mine. Here is the latest project I got flamed on every time I posted something about it.

My Dad, who is in his mid '70's shoots a rifle that I got together two years ago for him in 25-7mm. It shoots absolutely amazing! Even with his old eyes, he can shoot in the high .2's to mid .3's with it at 100 yards. Neither I, nor my son can do any better than that. I do his reloading and I just started with 257 Wby data and watched the pressure signs. In the course of a year, he shoots an elk, an antelope (Montana), a blacktail, and a few coyotes with it. If he can see it, and establish all the atmospherics, (range, wind, cosign, etc.) it's a one shot deal. It took me a couple hundred rounds for load development. At the current rate of fire, (max of 10 rounds per year), this rifle with it's "short barrel life" will last him unil he is over 116 years old. If I can shoot a hunting rifle every year for 30+ years before I "burn out the barrel", well so be it, I'll have to order another barrel.

I've got so much flak for the caliber of this rifle, (and others I've done), that ranged from "there is already a 257 Wby that will do the same thing" comments, to "it will burn out a barrel every 250 rounds". I just get sick of people going out of there way to try to quell someone elses excitement about a new project!

If you want a 25-300wm, I say GO FOR IT! Have fun and let us know how it works out. Good luck and keep us posted! Just remember...be patient with your load development.

Re: 25-300win mag imp (The Big Nasty)

I to say go for it.

I am a huge 7mm/180 grain Berger fan for killing power.

But I have to say, I use to run a 257 weatherby with 120 grain partitions and it was a killing machine.

I know several guys who run 25/284s with excellent results
