(300YARD), Semi-Auto, 6groups, 30round SHOOTOUT!

wow! nice run on improving your score!! very nice!

too bad about the hbar colt.... yeah, that wind can really screw with you even at 300yards if you don't take it into account.

really fun tho is it not!?!?

nice work myself and i'll update the boards later tonight.... very nice... very nice.

First the Triumph: Took my M21 back to the range today for another go because a) it was so much fun last time and b) I felt good
about my learning curve two days ago and wanted to give it another shot. Went sub MOA overall and 3X out of six.
Conditions were pretty windy shifting every few minutes.
I don't think it affected my overall average, but it sure did push my groups around. In other words, I shot through it but
couldn't "dope" it.

Shot on 6.19.13

Rifle: SA M21/M1A using front and Rear Bags
Barrel: 22" Stainless Krieger Match Barrel
Optics: Bushnell 3.5-30X50 set at 21X
Mount: Basset Low Rise Detachable
Ammunition: Federal 168 gr. GMM .308

Average: 3.037" (3.037/3.141 = 0.967 MOA)
Best Group: 2.134" (2.134/3.141 = 0.679 MOA)

New M21 300 Yard Target
2.532" + 4.211" + 3.553" + 2.134" 3.414" + 2.379" = 18.223/6 = 3.037 Average (3.037/3.141 = 0.967 MOA)

New M21 Best Group 2.134" (2.134/3.141 = 0.679MOA)

M21

Now the tragedy: I brought my Pre-Ban "hand selected" stock Colt HBAR Competition M6700 and shot six groups during blustery conditions. It's really been a pretty accurate rifle. I wanted to put this old Colt on the boards while I still can. Things looked O.K. through the spotting scope, but its hard to see .223 holes at 300 yards with mirage. When I went out to check, two of the consecutive groups had blown right (the wind direction) and one group was hugging the right edge and one shot of that group was off the paper. I kid you not. Next time. LOL

Colt HBAR Tragedy!

Board is all update bluto51! Nice job!

BTW everyone we are all sub moa across the board for not only average but best single so good job everyone! Looking good so far.

Colt HBAR Tragedy!

Going this coming monday.... Got the ammo all loaded up... Tried to go this last weekend but it was really crappy outside.

Thanks. I guess I'll hang around the boards until another six guys enter. LOL. Although it's an iconic weapon with a feel all its own, I think shooting the M14/M1A platform is a bit tricky. Lots of moving parts banging around when you pull the trigger. There are guys who do it well, with iron sights no less, but you won't see many multiple targets posted (shot by an M1A) like the 30 shot challenge on these forums. I don't have that many rounds through it and today's entry was a great learning experience with the rifle.

I'm starting another .223 build with a 20" RRA Varmit Bull barrel, but who knows when
that will be finished. The wait for the barrel and upper is supposed to be 6 months or more. In the meantime I guess I'll have to
try my 16" RRA at 300 and see if I can do better. Heck, I have an old, but nice, stock pre-ban Colt HBAR Competition "hand select" that I might try too. I hardly ever shoot it but it's accurate once you get past the 6# trigger.

My range is nice, but it's an hour drive from my house. If you go 600 yards in the opposite direction from the targets you're in Mexico.

Wow! That's gorgeous! Nice shooting!

Thanks. I rubbed the stock with 3 coats of Tru Oil and it brought out the grain and sealed the wood somewhat so it would
be less affected by humidity. An M14/M1A in a walnut stock is a work of art - at least to my eyes.

I got out and shot this today. This is tough as it gets. I have the target in my truck and will measure groups and get pics together sometime this week. I did not set any records with anything I shot.

Ok, being that I'm a man of my word and I always say post your results regardless of your outcome....

Incoming lame reason why I shot like crap, LOL!

I should've went later in the day as the mirage was UNGODLY even for 300yards.... I simply should've known better but it was my day off and I had ants in my pants to hit the range early. My targets were dancing all over the place so safe to say this new 300yard range I'm going to I will not being going to again until after 5pm or later if the sun is out full blaze... LOL. Anyway, It was still fun to test during extreme mirage conditions but I'm pretty much discounting all of this information. I'm still going to take at least the one nice group on target entry#2 which will massively bump up my best single group BUT just to be honest with you all it was most likely dumb ass luck with the amount of mirage I was playing around with today....... just being honest......... this doesn't reflect my shooting abilities nor my rifle's potential... Oh well, there was no way I was going to drive back home. Live and learn.

Also, what I found really interesting during this M.E.O.C.W target run was I had to adjust my scope down .25moa between each full 15round mag,, so that goes to show you how much powder difference can really really effect the bullet impact height!! 40.8 thru 41.2 was 3.25moa adjustment, 41.4 thru 41.8 was 3.00moa adjustment, 42.0 thru 42.4 was 2.75moa adjustment, and 42.6 thru 43.0 was 2.50moa adjustment just to keep the group location ~around the same area close to bullseye.

No point in adding it all up, but hell yeah i'm taking my best single group for my time, money, and effort. LOL!

Good on ya' Elfster! Nice single group. Actually it looks like your targets would be pretty tight
except for the one shot that seemed to get away and spoil a couple in each set this time. I know the feeling.
Shooting SIX consecutive groups is what really makes this a good challenge.

OMG, it was soooo hard to get good groups with the unreal mirage today.... it was really hard trying to figure out dead center bulls with how much my targets were jumping all over the place. Honestly, about a 1/4 way thru my gauntlet test all I was thinking is "I'm wasting my time and ammo", but WTF I didn't drive all that way for nothing AND mirage doesn't wait for a sniper during battle so I wasn't giving up for nothing.... Oh well.... I can't give someone else crap for not finishing a shootout target / not posting the info so there you go!

LOL! :)

I definately did not set the town ablaze with this set of groups. I love this fixed 10X scope, but it sure seems to open the groups up for me. I will come back and visit this challenge again with different glass on my rifle.

It looks like your groups are smaller than you think. Did you subtract your bullet diameter? It looks like your dial is on 2.972 at the outside to outside.
Also, where is your rifle pic? I would like to check it out.

I want to do this with my Rock River Varmint LAR-8 26 bull. Looks like fun!

Without that 5" group things would look a lot better. Actually, I'm impressed that you did this with a 10X scope. Bigger glass will definitely change things.

please re-do your entry with the correct #'s and PM me when done (just edit your existing entry).... otherwise nice shooting! very nice

haha. I did not subtract bullet diameter!!

OK, they are a tiny bit smaller, but not a huge amount. The rifle...hmmmm let me see if I can find a picture.

you're on the board & nice work my friend!

so, what did you think running this shootout @ 300yards? easy? not easy? good experience? what was the weather like? lots of mirage and wind? tell us all what you experienced during your shots...

Thanks Elfster, I really appreciate you running these shootouts. I am learning a bit about myself with these events.

Well, it was partly cloudy, and between 65 and 70 degrees. Not a bad day, the wind was increasing as I went through this event, the last group I rushed to try to get everything on paper and paid the price.

As I was shooting this, I found it easier than the 100yd shootout, because I couldnt see the bullet holes, no self induced pressure at all. I loaded 5 rounds in the mag and went to town. I would not wait for any barrel cooling, just shoot as soon as I felt comfortable for the next shot. It probably took me about 30 min to shoot the whole thing.

After I got done shooting, I had 30 rounds left so I banged some 600 yd steel!! I love the instant feedback.

going to hit up the 300yard range tomorrow...

so when are you going to get access to that 600yard range in your neck of the woods!? what, do you need to go thru some type of access test or something with the range master correct?

Good on ya' Elfster! Nice single group. Actually it looks like your targets would be pretty tight
except for the one shot that seemed to get away and spoil a couple in each set this time. I know the feeling.

The only 600+ yd. (1000 actually) range I know of in my area is Camp Pendleton. AFAIK it's only open for
competitions. I'll ask the couple of Hide members I know that shoot F Class at 1000 where they
train. But I think it's at the same range (300 yds) where I'm a member. Otherwise I have to
hit up my buddy in Los Angeles and visit him for a couple of days. His range is 750 I think.

Although this will not beat my existing entry, I'm a man of my word and have always said post your outcome regardless......... so here you go!

Wind was about 6 to 7mph the day I took these shots over the weekend. It only took 2 bullets fliers (1 on each of my over 4" groups) for me not to get the sub-moa all day long with my rock river 5.56 EOP varmint rifle. Sooooo close! The other 4 groups are sub-moa. The two bullet fliers is what really pisses me off, but oh well... it is all part of the game. Being that the 2 fliers are more elevation than windage, I can only blame myself.

The 3" circles using my circle stencil (in the entry pic below) works awesome with my vortex 16x power scope @ 300yards.... it is just like you're looking at a 1" circle at 100yards. I have found that having a perfectly round circle helps keep a crisp image in your scope so you know you're 100% dead center. I've also found that going later in the day, about 4 to 5pm in my area, really helps keep the mirage down to a minimum. I'm really happy about this other than the 2 friggen fliers. ALL .224 bullet holes were totally visible with my 60x konus spotting scope @ 300yards FYI. My best guess is I'm able to see .224 bullet holes on regular white paper with my 60x knous spotting scope up to about 325yards.... anymore than that and you would need shoot-n-see targets or a much larger caliber hole.

This is also the remainder of the 60grn VMAX ammo that was reloaded in the EPIC AR journey thread, for AR-15's 5.56 post right under the original post FYI: http://www.snipershide.com/[email protected]

group#1, 2.767" / 3.141 = .8809moa
group#2, 2.608" / 3.141 = .8303moa
group#3, 2.566" / 3.141 = .8169moa
group#4, 2.516" / 3.141 = .8010moa

I figured more people would be doing the 300yard run.

For those that participate in these shootout threads what is the max at your range? Im just wondering.

300 yards locally. I can travel and do 600 yards, and somewhere else, further.

OK!! finally!! I got this out of my hair with my DPMS 3G1 @ 300yards. Last time I tried this my reticle dot covered up an entire 6" shoot-n-see circle so I didn't even take my shots. This time, I tried a criss-cross pattern of duct tape which worked wonders with this DPMS 3G1 / 1-4power vortex scope combo. No problems at all @ 300yards and it worked great. Just DOPED scope @ 3.5moa and went to town. These are not the best groups in the world, but for a 1-4power vortex scope I'd say this is actually not too bad. It was actually really fun trying this with a 4x max scope. All I got to say is thank god for my 60x konus spotting scope so I could see the little .224 bullet holes @ 300yards.

It really is thanks to the rifle and the 4" red circle dot size I'm telling ya.

Dang elfie. You brought it with this one. Good shooting, with a 4X scope!!

Going to hit the 300yard range this weekend to give this a shot with some cheaper $24.99 per 100ct 165grn soft point BOAT TAIL "pet loads" of mine. It is actually my WI deer hunting / cheap plinking "pet load". Will see how it goes @ 300yards. This is pretty much the only reload that I put a small kiss of a crimp on the bullet.

Elfster,

That's pretty impressive shooting with a 4X scope. I also expected more people to give it a try at 300 yards. I'm putting a new
scope (Bushnell Tactical Elite 3.5-21X50 w/G2DMR reticle) on my M21 this weekend and it gives me an excuse to take it out
next week to try and better my average at 300.

Finally got to try again with the Pre-Ban Colt HBAR. I was shooting better on my first attempt (see my earlier "tragic"

IT WAS HOT AS F$CK TODAY! Like damn near 100 with crazy humidity with about 8mph wind. Anyway, I know I can do better than this with better weather conditions, but I wanted to get this rifle on the 300yard boards. Still, not too bad. I ended up running two total entries, 12 total groups, with 9 out of the 12 groups sub-moa. 2 fliers screwed me hard from getting sub-moa all day long. The entry with the .933" (.297moa) group would've been a sick entry if it wasn't for the two groups over 4" but oh well.

Damn, the 7mph to 15mph spike winds was kicking ass again today with my little 55grn vmax bullets @ 300yards, but I was able to improve my best single group...... which in all reality doesn't mean much to me. All shot with a bipod. Oh well.... This entry does nothing for improving my average especially with today's wind, but I'll take the lucky best group @ 1.924"!!! LOL

Anyway, after the wind had it's way with me I decided to bring my targets up to the 100yard line and finish off my last 10rounds with my mega-bench bag & the new pen insert MOD used on my chargemaster to try an eliminate some of this wind factor. Not too bad for 10shots with some wind, and I was really happy with the elevation of the group.

Thank you once again to marky @ tactical-tshirts! Winner = grand prize winner as listed in the OP,,,,, OR once the top ten fills up & 5 people are listed in the previous leader boards. This is all for fun & is subject to change FYI! Keep it honest & keep it fun & this will hopefully continue into the future!

we are 4 entries away from awarding the winner for this thread! it's been a longggg road for this 300yard semi-auto shootout. I was hoping it would warm up here in WI so I could take the new 20" varmint bull barrel rock river out to the 300yard range & see what she can do.
